Sammy Sosa leaves the last game early (out $87,000), Jamal Lewis headed to Jail (4 months in prison and at least 2 game suspension), Ricky Williams suddenly loves football again (Loss of $8 million have anything to do with that?).I am so sick of these players who only want one thing; a ring. Sure, everyone wants one, but what ever happened to the players that went to a team and turned things around, like Farve did? It is nothing new, but it seems like these days if a big shot player doesn't get his championship ring right away, he blames everyone else on the team and wants a trade. Ricky Williams is a perfect example. He wanted out of New Orleans so they sent him to the Dolphins, and now because things were not going his way there, he not only bailed on them, but bailed on the NFL. Now 3 months later, and he once again loves football and wants to come back. His only motive is to come back and get traded to another team, which the Dolphins probally will because they no longer can trust him, nor can his teammates.Elly Manning could have sucked it up, and gone to the Chargers and been the starting QB and turned things around on the coast, instead he cried about not wanting to go to THAT team and demanded a trade or he wouldn't play. Grow the hell up Manning. You were not even in the NFL 2 minutes and you already thing your name carries wieght. Hows the view from the bench in New York? Did we not learn anything from the US Mens basketball team? The only thing money buys is a bunch of overpaid underperforming bunch of cry babies who think wins should be handed to them so they can drive back home in thier $200,000 cars. That was such a refreshing wake up call when they came home losers. And ues, they did bring home a medal, sure, but its no secret that they came home with the wrong medal, and as much I love the US, this was just what our sports world needed. Maybe they should go back and watch the 1992 and 1996 games and watch some real players bring home the gold. Now Dale Earnhardt Jr. just days after being fined for saying a curse word on national TV wants NASCAR to listen to him like they did his father. Prior to his fathers death, the elder Earnhardt was often in the NASCAR trailer, talking with the big shots about this and that, ways to improve things, and so on. And why not, he was the most respected driver on the circuit. Now Dale Jr. is hoping one day that he can follow the same path. Please! For starters, Dale KNEW everything about his car and racing in general. He was as good as he was becasue he knew how to drive a stock car. Jr. is only as good as the team makes him, and often, he can only find victory lane is his team mate blocks for him. It has gotten to the point where its not even fun to watch the 4 biggest races of the year.Well I am done ranting, but I think I got a pretty good topic starter. Have fun folks bashing me!Chris Bogley

I actually agree with you SVTS. While I may have not been a Dale Sr. fan (mainly because of overexposre here in the South). He was a true driver, he knew everything about Nascar. Dale Jr. isn't the same. Hes just a driver and thats it. Hell my brother (who used to race 4 cylinder mod.) can beat Jr. on Lowe's Motor Speedway. Jr. needs to learn how to walk before he can run. I pull for Jeff Gordon because hes one of the last true drivers. I also pull for the Carolina Panther. They may have lost the Super Bowl, but the fact they've been to the Super Bowl doesn't go through their heads. They still play like they never been there. As for the rest of the players in sport. GROW UP!

The Carolina Panthers are a prime example of what can happen to a club with the right TALENT. From last place to the Super Bowl. I have been to New York, and I have been to San Diego. There is no comparison. I would take San Diego anyday. Sure thier team is horrible, but if I was a QB wanting to make a name for myself in the league, San Diego I would go. How cool would it be to step in to that situation, and lead that team to the playoffs? Instead, Chargers fans get a slap in the face when the high and mighty brother of Payton Manning says he will not play there, no matter what. I guess he is not up to the challange of being a leader and a winner? Chris Bogley

RE: Boy you have to love our youths heros of today!

Things aren't that different in sports than they are anywhere else. And things aren't that different now than they were before. Players who look for excuses or who are after personal glory and gain don't usually win championships. Exhibit A: Barry Bonds. I'm a little confused about your complaint that all these guys want is a ring. The point of sports is not to become upstanding citizens or to give warm fuzzies to your team, it's to win championships. I'd hate to have a team that didn't care about a ring. I agree that how one goes about it makes a difference, though. Compare Bonds to Michael Jordan. OK, he got a bit out of whack with the baseball thing, but when he was playing basketball, the only thing that mattered was the championship. Jordan worked to make his team better rather than jumping ship, but he wouldn't be the greatest if he weren't so driven. So, what about some of these other guys? Gretzky, Elway, Catfish Hunter way back when - all these guys were at some point reviled because they changed teams. Gretzky wanted to make his mark in LA, Elway refused to go to the team that drafted him (was it Cleveland?), and Catfish Hunter jumped from the A's to the Yankees. I wouldn't put any of them in the 2nd tier of players. At that level, the successful players all have tremendous self confidence, or they wouldn't be there. Along with that often goes behavior that we wouldn't put up with from anyone else. If you like the guy, it's OK, but if you don't, it's anti-social. If the team wins, you forget about the silliness, but if they lose, you've got a ready-made excuse. The sun keeps rising in the east regardless.Andy

>Jordan worked to make his team better rather than jumping ship, but he wouldn't be the greatest if he weren't so driven.Key phrase there...Jordan WORKED to make his team better. And that brings me to another point....If a player retires, for god sakes, stay retired. Jordan and Sanders have only tarnished a otherwise steller achievement by repeatedly coming out of retirement. Its just a media stunt to gain more attension.Chris Bogley

Good rant Chris.Sammy Sosa makes $87,400 a day!!!!For that kind of money, you have no excuse not to hit every time.Wanna see a good game, watch a Little League game.I don't care about how Dale Jr. compares to his Dad.What I care about is how NASCAR has turned to s**t(fine me 25 pts). What I care about is multi-millionares going on strike and actually expecting public support. What I care about is the US Olympic basketball team sucking as bad as they did.Too much money, too many "shiny colors".Thankfully this kind of BS(another 25 pts) hasn't tainted MC racing. Not mainstream enough.

I don't know, both Freddie Spencer and Eddie Lawson came out of retirement repeatedly,to win.I watched Freddie Spencer come out of retirement at Loudon in 1994 and set the track record on a Ducati. He was in his forties.

RE: Boy you have to love our youths heros of today!

It doesn't do any good to rant about professional sports, and I include major college sports in that as well. It's just another form of entertainment. It's not that I think these guys are overpaid (good ol' supply and demand free market at work here - what's more all American than that?), but just that it's not worth my time any more. I still follow the baseball season to see who's ahead (and I'm "watching" the NY-Minn game via the GameDay graphics - 3-1 NY after 3-1/2), but I don't take it seriously any more. I'm not in general disgusted with the players or owners, but sports just doesn't matter as much. I get a kick out of guys who come into the office after their team has played and are depressed or ecstatic, depending on how they did. So what - no matter who wins, I still have to go to work. If they made it worth my while to really support a team (a day off for every win or something like that), I'd get more serious about it. But I've got better things to do with my time.If you get to the point where you've got to rant about it, take a look at how much the players/drivers/owners really care about you. Not much. Just keep sending in those dollars! Andy

RE: Boy you have to love our youths heros of today!

Chris, I agree with most of your rant, but allow me to play devils advocate.
While most atheletes now are absoultly without soul and all they really care about is the paycheck they get, there a few very good people to look up too. Brett Favre is a very, very good example. Drafted as a strong safety from Southern Miss, he is now arguably the toughtest man in football, both physically and mentally. How can you break your thumb, and then go out and throw 3361 yards and have a passer rating of 90.1, 6th best in the NFL. How can you get a concussion, come in 2 plays later on 4th and 5 (without the permission/knowledge of the coaches/training staff) and throw a touchdown? How does a man start 214 games in a row (including playoffs)? How do you throw for 399 yards and 4 TDs in the first half, the DAY AFTER your father dies? I don't know how he couldnt be considered a hero, someone a 10 year could look up too, sh!t I still look up to him - and so does my dad.
I guess what I'm getting at, is that there are still some bright spots out there, players who are respectable, players who little kids should look up too.
-- I guess the secert is out, Favre is my hero.

Well the atheletes are just as human as we are. Sure they get into some trouble ever so often, but we do also, but I am not condoning what they have done, it wasn't right. But to me, all sports have gone down the drain. Perfect examples are wrestling and football.
This WWE mess, I dont know what to say about it, that is nothing but a movie. I dont even watch it anymore. Football is about as worse. You used to be able to do a dance in the end zone or do the funky chicken, now its a $10,000 fine. I doesnt get that serious. People just need to quit being weenies, especially in the sports world.
