Rail based fun in Flight Sim – image 1

Just thought I'd share a flight I did today in Microsoft Flight Simulator. Since railroad tracks are included in FS2004, I thought I'd fly along the Marias Pass just for kicks! The entire flight, in a DC-3, took about 40 minutes. I took off from Whitefish Airport and landed at Shelby. It was a lot of fun, and included some interesting flying through mountain passes. Here are the airports I visited along the way:Whitefish (5BS)
Starr-Browning (8S0)
Cut Bank Municipal (KCTB)
Shelby (KSBX)There is a VOR at Cutbank, CTB, 114.40
There is an NDB at Shelby, SBX, 347.0The Kallispell Branch is also there and includes airports at Glacier Park and Kalispell.Next I'm going to try flying the Kicking Horse Pass!Rail based fun in Flight Sim – image 2Dave Reage - Beta Tester

RE: Rail based fun in Flight Sim

Good Idea, I have been doing this for a while. Oddly enough the first time I did it was over Marias Pass too. I can't even remember what airport I took off out of though because that was a while back. I mostly fly around New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Maine in the C172SP or J3 Cub. I can fly low and slow over the tracks. I'm not a big fan of flying the big airliners. Doesn't seem like fun to me. It's too bad that the tracks aren't too exact. They are placed roughly where they should be. I find they are a good reference for VFR. The tracks can be edited though with a program called Coast Line Editor or something like that. It lets you change roads , bridges, coastlines, railroad tracks ect. Pretty neat program.
