I am posting this message here because many members are experienced computer users and also as I have not found a relevant post elsewhere on the web. While viewing my dial-up status window, I notice that my computer is continuously sending out bytes. My average speed is about 44.4 kps. However, even with this normal speed for a 56k modem, it often takes a long time to view web pages. I sometimes have to keep hitting the refresh key in order to receive text and images. There is a great discrepancy between the number of bytes sent and received. I have tested various ISP and browsers, and my computer still does not stop sending out bytes. I have performed a virus scan but have come up with nothing and also checked my internet options. This problem has baffled me since it started about two months ago.

RE: Dial-up connection help needed.

Sounds like malware or spyware. Possibly a trojan.ZoneAlarm has a free firewall that will block any unauthorized outgoing traffic.I would also recommend checking out Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D to scan for spyware/malware. (also free)-Jeff

RE: Dial-up connection help needed.

Yes, when I had 56k dial-up I noticed that I had the problem all the time, and in spite of an-up-to-date firewall and a trojan checker which showed up nothing. Dear Bill is there something you're are not telling us? I think that would make a good Country & Western song: Oh Billeeeee is there somethin yer ain't tellin us?Mike

RE: Dial-up connection help needed.

Jeff, When I type in a URL, my browser periodically goes to a tripod.sbc.html website, or something along that line, which is not even my selected starting homepage. I searched for files associated as “tripod’ and upgraded the spyware/adware removal software on my computer, but have also come up with nothing thus this is one clever Trojan if that is the case. I recently tried reinstalling Internet Explorer, substituting it with Deepnet Explorer, downloaded Trojan Remover and Sybot Search and Destroy, and am now running a firewall. I noticed that when sending out a ping to test my service connection my DNS server responded well, however, my IP server only received half of the bytes sent. Thank you for your help.

Hi Walter,
sounds interesting, so if you post again in the General forums where computer-related questions are allowed, I think you might get a better response.Mike

RE: Dial-up connection help needed.

Mine doesn't show send and received anymore, but I remember seeing it and I think it's normal. Back in the days of DOS and Dinosaurs you used to send or receive files after negotiating a transfer protocol, Xmodem, Zmodem or Kermit, and set the error checking for Xon/Xoff or hardware control or whatever. Then the sending computer sent one "packet" of 1 kilobyte, stopped and waited for the receiving computer to send the same packet back to verify integrity, then sent the next packet. I don't really know very much about this newfangled internet thingy, but I suspect it works the same way only a hell of a lot faster.FYI, there's often some confusion as to connection speed because of the BITS and BYTES. A "BYTE" is 8 "BITS" of info, and when people see kb and kB they frequently assume they're the same. A 56k modem has a max transfer speed of 56kbps, as in "KiloBITS per second". Divide by 8 and it's actually 7 KiloBYTES per second, which is pretty slow by today's standards. Usual max download on dialup is 1 to 4 kBps, and you gotta be really lucky to get 4. A single 100 kiloBYTE jpeg on a web page will take anywhere from 30 seconds to a minute to download on 56k dialup. Get DSL or cable, worth the extra money.
