RE: If I was to start a route now in MSTS.........
Don't use any default MSTS scenery objects. Use only those objects you create yourself or download from one of the file libraries serving up MSTS objects. The legality of importing MSTS objects into a TMTS route is questionable.Cal Rasmussen Beaverton, OR (My email is in my profile)Columbia Gorge Route (Phase 2-- On Hold.)
RE: If I was to start a route now in MSTS.........
> The legality of importing MSTS objects into a TMTS route is questionable.Cal, that's just not true. Copyright is very straightforward. An end customer acting only for themself can do anything they please with MSTS content. It's called fair use. A commerical vendor can do almost nothing with MSTS content. Simple as that. The sort-of exception to this is that a commercial vendor can provide a utility that converts file formats from a MSTS version to any TMTS format. But that said the first two rules still apply: the vendor cannot provide converted MSTS content to anyone and an end user can convert anything on their own. The final wrinkle is nobody is allowed to widely distribute MSTS content created by others, original or converted. The actual number of copies defined by "widely" is fuzzy and open to a case by case determination (e.g., the music industry says the number is 0 but there are plenty of court cases where 2, 3, 5, or more copies were thought to be fair use; it mostly depends on how much $ is involved).Lastly, the system of play cannot be copyrighted. So if the TMTS game plays EXACTLY like MSTS, there isn't anything Microsoft can do about it.So what that all means is this:1) your average T-S.com subscriber can do whatever they feel like doing so long as they keep the new item to themself.2) Nobody can distribute another persons MSTS content, original or converted, w/o being licensed to do so by the creator.3) TMTS can pick and choose whatever features they like from MSTS and create their own identical functionality. Or do something similar but better. It's all up to them and MS can't say boo about it.Dave NelsonWP mainline, Oakland-Stockton: 100% complete; SP mainline, Oakland-Stockton: 20% complete; Aug 1950 <<new .sig under construction>>

Dave, you are absolutely correct...I think! However, if a route builder chooses to have all user created content and no MSTS content, I guarantee you it will look a h--l of a lot better!Cal Rasmussen Beaverton, OR (My email is in my profile)Columbia Gorge Route (Phase 2-- On Hold.)
RE: If I was to start a route now in MSTS.........
Thanks guys. I wasn't thinking along the lines of MSTS default vs non-default content. I agree with Cal that most of the MSTS default content isn't very good. However, I was thinking more along the lines of things like terrain smoothing, dynamic track, objects with complex animation, Xtracks, LOD, etc.
RE: If I was to start a route now in MSTS.........
I think I would avoid anything that affects the global parts of MSTS, i.e. X-tracks, Kosmos, SkyConductor, that sort of stuff. Then I also agree that the default content is not much count, but to save time, I use it, but generally at a distance from the track so it cannot be seen in detail outside of RE.On the RMD-2/4, such things as signals are not default (Hank's stuff), and catenary gantries are not default (Tim Muir) and I use a bunch of R. Picardi's stuff, and made most of my own bridges, using Picardi's libraries, but I have not used X-tracks, New Roads, etc. Not that I don't think they are great, but better to find out later they can be imported, than to weep if they cannot.J. Jerry, the way I look at it in my case, if it ends up not being 'im-portable' that's just a very good excuse to do it over again, only getting it right this time Just need a little prod and that might do it RobertR .. My two earliest routes will be candidates for rehashing anyway simply because I did not have the skills acquired as time went on, went I produced them, i.e. the BR and KP Subdivisions of CSX. Once the RMD-4 is complete, I plan to retire from RE for a while and get back on the neglected HO layout. In 4 weeks, I will be away from the PC for a week while visiting the grandchildren - traveling by way of train of course.J. H. Sullivan
