RE: News Update

Guys...The movies do not do the scenes justice. In person, those screens were running (I believe) 1280 x 1024 and in excess of 100fps! And instead of normal split screen for front window/side window viewing, the full sized simulator appeared to be networked through two happily-humming PC's I spied...ehem...while the PIE guys weren't watching. I'm working on a short write up of TMTS at the NMRA show...As soon as complete, I'll post it here and on my site. In the meantime, here's a few pics the PIE guys sent. Busy, busy, busy! The full-sized simulator always had a line of would-be
engineers, firemen and brakemen. While most items at the show displayed
big signs reading "DO NOT TOUCH!" or "HANDS OFF!", the RailDriver full-
sized simulator was all hands-on, and obviously the best thing ever
designed for a show to get folks involved with trains and have some fun.

News Update – image 5Guess who's busy moving freight around TMTS Junction? Why, our very
own Macster - who else?! Brian was representing his N-Scale club and their
large, and highly detailed N-Trak layout several rows over. Shirt sleeve at
left belongs to PIE's Tim "The Train Troll" Lewis.

News Update – image 6Yours truly (in the grey shirt), with good friend Dan Zollner (standing, in the
blue shirt) keeping the autograph hounds at bay - heehee! Unknown
patron (in the hat and at the controls of a RailDriver) flashes a goofy grin
for the camera, as his train runs a red and slams into emergency.

Marc & Company,It was very nice to meet you in Seattle! I have heard much about you and was glad that I got a chance to meet you.
(Same goes to Macster!)Nice pictures! Thanks for including me in them! Nice surprise...I am glad that everyone enjoyed driving the simulator! As I posted in a different forum...The best time I had was when I was able to let 3 year olds drive the train. The look on their faces when they were done, was in my humble opinion....priceless! They just couldn't believe that they drove a train! It was truly fun to watch the young kids drive a train. They loved it. (The adults did have as much fun as the kids, but all I kept hearing was..."I want one in my basement" or "How do I get one"? I would point to my boss and tell them that he was the man to talk with. Now I wonder how many adults will want to get one? (And say they are getting it for the kids? We all know who REALLY wants it! LOL)Thanks for all the kind words and we will continue to do our best with the sim! -Tim Lewis ("Raildriver's" very own "Train Troll")

The odds are pretty low on the chance of an SP route being included with TMTS, I suppose...

RE: News Update

Whoa, very nice indeed Tim.
Enjoyed those videos and have asked my bookie to place another $10 on this horse.
Problem is it raises more questions that are probably to early yet but what the heck I'll ask a couple of them anyway.Tracks - Are you intending a single track system employing separate track sections and incorporating the best of whats available now e.g. XTracks, YTracks and scale rail. Meaning we have access to slip points, tramway sections etc all in one package?Water - Is the water intended to be multi directional? that is will we have the ability to assign flow direction to the water in different areas.I particularly like the look of the terrain mesh. Very fine edges will now appear to be possible giving much more realistic berms and river edges plus small streams at last.
Echo snipers remarks re the front coupler. Good touch to show that aspect which has frustrated MSTS users for so long. All in all, a full neck in front now but a long way to go to the winning post yet me thinks.
Cheers

RE: News Update

Nice!!!! Very Nice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Got some front coupler action goin' on there.
If you'd have hit that flat car at that speed in MSTS, even with the back coupler, it would have derailed.
I love that water.
Looks like they've already progressed beyond KUJU.

News Update – image 12TMTS using the present range of SCALERAILS and available Trackbeds options it will be a while before Okrasa, Roman, UK-Finescale, in my humble opinion the best looking tracks and switches of all, News Update – image 13Narrow Gauge, Double-Gauge, 3-Rail and other creators can re-design their Rails to the SCALERAILS profile which, looking again at some pictures at 3D-TRAIN recently, seem to have flatter rail tops then prototypes, their running surfaces part being more square than these shallow railhead ones :News Update – image 14In order to be useful for Routes of various countries a greater variety of Trackbed Textures with varying ties spacings will also be needed, no doubt Freelancers will come up with again ? All the above is mainly for the attention of the TMTS designers, to humbly submit to them what I would like to see in their Train Sim as far as Tracks Layouts are concerned ! Early days yet ! >Bruce. I am not joking and not throwing out any lures. I do not question and did not question the graphics quality of either preview. What I stated was the fact that Trainmaster is a cab view oriented simulator. The first preview is just that, a cab view. It may be an external cab view, but still a cab view. It does not show any different aspect to the user interface of the simulator than the existing Trainmaster product. That is not what I want in a simulator. Plain and simple. If these previews are samples to show off the graphics engine, then I agree that things look very good. If the second preview is showing a free roaming camera view, then that will be great. I looked at it as showing off the reflections and shadows from the surface of the water. Those are the little details that add to the realism. I think that the developers realize that providing different camera views is essential to the product's sucess. I do not think that I am the only person who wants to watch their trains run from outside the cab, even though I may be the only person saying it. Bill

RE: News Update

Bill,I'm a little lost here as to your point. A "simulator" is supposed to simulate the real life counterpart e.g. airplane cockpit simulators for training. Therefore, the primary view in a train simulator would be the cabview. Do I occassionaly use the 4 view to watch the train passing by, of course, but my primary reason for using train sim is to simulate being the engineer on a work assignment.Note to the TMTS folks - could you find a way to make my computer chair move just like the engineer's seat on a real locomotive? I stated in my original post that I spend less than 5% of my time in the cab view mode. Cab View is NOT what I am looking for. If all that were available for MSTS was a cab view, then I would have returned it long ago. Hence, my decision not to purchase Trainmaster (as it currently exists) because it offers only a cab view. I do not want to train to become a railroad employee.. I want to sit back and watch the train roll by. Having sat in the pilot's seat of a US Air Force C130 simulator, I know that no personal computer simulator will, in my lifetime, ever be able to give us a TRUE simulator perspective. If I want a true simulator, I will go bug my brother in law for some more sim time at the base. I still have hopes for a very nice product from the Trainmaster people, so I will continue to watch and see what comes out in their updates.

RE: News Update

wws04662,You’re right no personal simulator in our life time (unless you have a couple million bucks to spend) is going to recreate the important g-force effects that come into play on a human body during flight. For a train simulator it is all about applying the brakes a certain way at the right time, slack action and proper throttle usage. Unlike a flight simulator these important actions can be accurately duplicated with a train simulator (personal simulator). I’ve said this many times before, the reason why you are lured out of the cab in MSTS is because there is no skill required to successfully run a train. If you care to learn anything about real life train handling, and actually follow the speed restrictions provided in the manual with the current version of TrainMaster, getting “stuck in the cab” can be very interesting. As dated as the program is no other consumer train simulator has come close to duplicating train handling physics (especially braking) like TrainMaster. Improving upon the physics of TrainMaster and combining it with an up to date graphics engine is what P.I. Engineering is working on and from what I’ve seen you’ll have your out side views too.

Reminds me of one jury I once served on, they brought us in, the lawyers went sidebar, they took us out again. One woman said, "Well, I know how I'm gonna vote, that man is guilty as sin!"Hey wait a minute, they haven't even read the charges yet, we don't even know what he's accused of! "He just looks evil to me, with that diamond stickpin."The defendant wasn't wearing a stickpin, neither was his lawyer, that was the proseceuting attorney she was looking at! Okay, let's take a sampling here.News Update – image 16News Update – image 17News Update – image 18Well, there you have it, MSTS is a cabview only simulator, and furthermore there are no towns, cities, bridges, tunnels, or anything else besides trees and bushes.
I know that because I looked at three screenshots.

Yet, with MSTS; when you hit the "2" key, you find yourself outside the cab, viewing the train from the outside. I could never find the external view control key for TRAINMASTER..... I do not base my "in cab only" statement on screenshots alone. I base it on what I have seen on my own computer with the TRAINMASTER Demo.... What I stated and what I will continue to state and feel is that a simulator, no matter how accurately it performs, that only offers an in cab view and no external cameras DOES NOT INTEREST ME. I know as well as anyone else that this simulator is still in the design phase and that what we are shown now is nothing like what the final product will be. If no one voices any desire for some other views than the cab view, there is no reason to believe that this product would not follow the previous release in that respect. I will gladly wait and see what comes from this project and I will happily bide my time with MSTS, GMAX, and Trainz until then.. I have been using all 3 for a long time and I am still having fun with all of them. I do not need a new game every month because I am bored with what I have.

RE: News Update

I don't have any inside info, so don't take this as "gospel", but I am sure that they are building external views into the new sim. Otherwise, why would the early screen shots have been external views. At the same time, I hope that they build realistic information into the cabview, so that it will be possible to run in a cab-only realistic manner. Then the choice is up to the user.
