Nels has moved us into our own forum, this is so we can discuss topics and show screens and information as we develop the new version of Trainmaster, we call it TMTS at PI (TrainMaster Train Simulator)Please feel free to post any comments, developers working on the project will also drop in from time to time so you may find yourself in the middle of a developers discussion as well, it is our policy to (Where possible) be open with you and show you as much as we can given that this is a new product and dont want to tell everyone everything since it will spoil the surprize!Anyway, thank you nels and welcome to our new forum.

RE: Welcome!

The best news I have had in a long while. I feel more compatibility may result from this than what I expected from MSTS2. I don't want to give up certain MSTS things, and now maybe I won't have to give up too much. Thanks for choosing to be as compatible as possible with existing content. I know that it may make for more work in some areas, and it may make things easier in others, but for the users, it makes things much better for us. Thanks again!

Tim, I'll tell you what I would pay for:.eng files for MSTS with accurate physics, if that's possible. At least for the north american stuff -- I guess you can't travel to Japan. I'm having a wild time trying to make one from downloads. There's one that may have realistic airbrakes, but instead of recharging they dump 30 lbs., and one where the dynamics seem ok but the air recharges too fast. And of course, they should have head-out views.Maybe they could be a free download to get people over to watch your TM development.Of course, the couplers would have to be unrealistic not to break over the bug areas.

RE: Welcome!

Great news, your team is the winner by a nose in the first race and certainly has my vote following your news articles.
The compatability with MSTS routes and models is a bonus and I hope it see's the flash of my credit card emerging from my wallet before to long.
I somehow suspect that compatibility with MSTS may be not as easy as it sounds in terms of that product belonging to another producer and the ease of releasing reconstituted routes with previous textures and objects perhaps.
However, I wish you every success and will be watching development with interest.
Cheers

RE: Welcome!

I certainly wish the project well and look forward to developments. The idea of being able to have it backward compatible with MSTS routes and rolling stock sounds good. However before proceeding I think it would be wise to test the legallity of this aspect. For example, any route once converted and redistributed (freeware or otherwise ) that used default MS/Kuju textures, objects and even the track could be in breach of copyright. Currently this is tolerated as an end-user need to have a copy of MSTS to use them. Then there is the issue of using MS/Kuju file formats (.ace , .s , .w etc.) outside of the original game. Since at least to my understanding of intellectual property rights this may require MS/Kuju permission/licencing and they could refuse to give such permission - or worse! This should not stop you from making a better sim - but I at least would like to know that backward compatibility is indeed possible and legal. I suspect that this feature alone will be the deciding factor for many MSTS fans in supporting the proposed product.Having invested a lot of time and effort with MSTS1 most fans don't want to end up with the current situation we find ourselves in, of having the "BETAMAX" trainsim. ( Technically superior - but doomed to fade into obsolence. )Cheers Cribbo.

RE: Welcome!

I don't think there are any legal issues if PIE distributes a sim without any content they do not own.

Now it would be up to the end user to load the content he wants. There is plenty of free stuff here on Train-Sim.com and loads more payware routes/rolling stock.Ok, I buy TMTS, intstall it on my system then convert all my MSTS content which loads into TMTS. No copyright infringment here, this is for my personal use. Of course I am NOT permitted to distribute any of the converted files, but who cares? I can however distribute MSTS files but only as freeware. The Microsoft EULA says I can do that and I already did, witness the NEC4 route.
If I converted the NEC4 to TMTS I think I am forbidden to distribute the converted files, even as freeware. The legal pundits are gonna have a ball with this.

RE: Welcome!

Hi guys,I wish you all the best in developing this new simulator! I especially liked that you mentioned high speed electrics in your list of development goals. I will sign off with the obligatory wish list-- two features that were not available in MSTS and would be great additions:1) canted track, so we can truly lean into those high speed curves2) an API to create a custom .dll in which to implement vehicle dynamics, in addition to the parameter file approach. (Got that idea from that "other" simulator Down Under)Again, best of luck and keep us posted.cheers

WoW Tim,
Good luck to PI on this venture.Tell ya what, put me on a list to buy the sim when it's ready.
Hell, I'lleven buy it even if it has no routes or rolling stock included. (Bet that would make the copywrite issues go away!!)

RE: Welcome!

Best wishes on the success of this venture. Will I buy it? Heck, where do I sign up to PRE-buy it?! I will be following this new sims development with great anticipation. I truly believe that TMTS will be the future of train simming. While I have never used TrainMaster, I must say that based on my satisfaciton with my RailDriver unit, I have no doubt PIE will deliver an outstanding railroad simulation experience. And further, to me it seems PIE is already off to a better start than MS/Kuju was. They're talking to us, and listening carefully I would expect. I feel that the cancellation of MSTS2 was the best thing that could possibly have happened. Finally I would like to thank Nels for hosting this new forum. Nels, I just don't know where this community would be without you. Thanks for everything!

RE: Welcome!

Glad to hear about the new project. I checked your website earlier today and noticed the announcement, and sent your company a E-mail. If I, or any of us, can be of help, I believe all of would want to try.
My specialty is twofold. CSX Routes, and preserving history. I have the BR & KP sub. (CSX) in the library, but I plan a redo of these later, and now may wait for your product - especially if you can produce a more stable, less likely to corrupt, editor. Then I do routes to preserve history, such as the Milwaukee Road.J. H. Sullivan, P.E.
