Well thanks to everyone who showed up. There was actually a pretty good turn out considering some cancelations etc. When I first seen the KHP simulation on TD3 I realized that if this was an accurate representation (I think it is) of the mainline, then the traffic may be a little too light to justify dispatching via TD3.On a few ocasions there we were at the sessions capacity, and this left few alternatives for both second runs, any any new members trying to get a train. This is more ideal for a very small group, or at the very least a very planned session that may operate over a longer period of time with more than 1 dispatcher.A route I did dispatch a few weeks back, that I thought worked out well was the Florida Funnel. There were many ghost trains, and a large amount of volume of trains coming online that provided lots of action. Even though this was tougher on the person dispatching since I had the entire desk to take care of outside of MSTS.The other thing that was tough is that on routes with big grades it's easy for a train to go faster than average or slower than average. Where as a more flat route average speed is alot closer to top speed. I am going to host another Funnel session in a couple of weeks. If you felt this was boring, I encourage you to give it a try. There was alot of positive feedback from the Funnel, and though some people were happy tonight, I think this is nothing compared to high density traffic. Keep in mind too when dispatching via TD3 it is alot like running an activity in MSTS. The dispatcher is not quite as adaptable to sudden changes. Trains and work areas have to match what is on the dispatcher's screen or it gets a little confusing. Hot boxes, breakdowns, engine problems etc. are called on by the TD3 software on a random basis. Of course a pc crashing (like mine tonight) can not be helped, or a faulty program like MSTS.Feel free to make any comments and suggestions here, and we'll try it all again in a few weeks on the Florida Funnel.Take CareSean

Hi SeanI really enjoyed this session even though I didn't get to bed here in Blighty until 4:30a.m., you did a great job dispatching and your voice comms were always clear and concise. Thanks very much, despite what I said about the Florida Funnel, I may well grab that route and give it a go next time you dispatch on that route.

Cheers
Martin

Hot boxes, breakdowns, engine problems etc. are
>called on by the TD3 software on a random basis. Can you not turn this off? I mean, on the frrware td2 that i have you can set the occurance of these things happening to 0%. Can you not do that in TD3?Markb

RE: KHP Wrap Up and some thoughts on TD3 dispatching

Yes you can on TD3, and you can change the % of when these things do happen. I usually keep them at realistic levels. My theory on this is that if your a real engineer, then hot boxes, engine problems is something you can't control. None of this occured on the KHP session just run, and the first Funnel session I hosted it did occur to 1 engine who had to reduce his Max speed. A hot box went off on a train outside the territroy. In some of the sessions I've been in I've heard alot of people adlib random scenerios like hitting a car, telling the train that just went by there were sparks etc. Basically TD3 would take the random factor out of the operators hands, and given to fate. The operator simply runs his trains, holds for meets, and if a problem occurs deals with it.I think the key to keeping this both realistic yet enjoyable is to have many options. Unfortunatley KHP failed in this aspect because we had a good turnout, on a layout with a low capacity. In retrospect the Funnel session I have set up for next Saturday has about 20 trains. If fate has it you hit a hotbox, and you don't want to wait, there is always another train waiting to be run. Let the AI crew do the boring stuff Sean
