Jul-09-01, 05:06 PM (EST) 3. "RE: TM4" Ted, an update to Trainmaster 4 has just come out. It is free but costs $6.00 US for shipping. Maybe you should negotiate with Jean about the cost to you of bringing the program up to date if it is not already version. 4.1.

Jul-10-01, 05:11 PM (EST) 5. "RE: TM4" Hi Jean, how did you like version 4.1? Is it a little easier to keep within the speed limits now? I ordered the update a few days ago but have not received it as yet. The previous version had no good way of knowing when the speed limits were about to change.I agree that the Microsoft simulator is far ahead of the Train Master simulator in graphics. I wish Trainmaster would have incorporated some of the good things about their previous version 3.2 into their version 4. I shall keep Trainmaster just for its better accuracy in train dynamics. Too bad Microsoft can't get together with Train Master and work out their accuracy problems. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jul-10-01, 06:18 PM (EST) 6. "RE: TM4" Well, to be honest with you I opened the software, gave it a try and put it back in its case after two minutes because I received it a little while later than MTS.It is important for me to see the
outside of the train, not just the inside.I do not know the prior version of TM 4.1 and cannot compare both versions.
But I can say speed limit changes instantly and you cannot know when it will change.

Jean

Jul-12-01, 10:21 AM (EST) 7. "RE: TM4" Hello Jean - Hello Jim,Thanks for your responses. I bought MSTS and just got around to trying it yesterday and I must say I'm pretty blown away by it.
I'm going to download the Train Master demo and give it a try before I buy it. I'm interested in acuracy too, but I also would like to see the outside of the train. I'm looking forward to trying TM.Ted Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jul-12-01, 10:27 AM (EST) 8. "RE: TM4" Good morning Ted,
I too am very impressed with Train sim in spite of some bugs which will probably be fixed at some point.I liked the version of TrainMaster that preceded version 4. I was not greatly impressed with Train Master 4, though I just shelled out $6.00 for the update. I wish they had spent the time on updating version 3 to get it so the sound works with Windows Me. Jul-12-01, 03:18 PM (EST) 9. "RE: TM4" Hello Jim,Do you have any idea what the plans are for the future of TM? You ought to give them your input on what you'd like to see in future releases. From what I've seen in this forum you have taken a pretty in-depth look at both versions of the sim and are familiar with MTS, so you could give them an informed opinion. I would love to see TM give Bill Gates and company some good competition. We sim fans would be sure to benefit.
The way you talk about TM 3 makes it sound like a train sim I'd like to have, but I sure would miss the sound.
Also from what you said the printouts that are missing in TM 4 would give some really useful info. When I was using Train Sim, yesterday, I was thinking about the fact that I had no idea what the weight was of a consist or how much weight to expect a particular engine to handle under a particular set of circumstances. I would really like to see that. It would add greatly to the realism.
I imagine there will be improvements and additions to both simulators, especially if we tell both groups of developers what would make their sim more realistic and enjoyable to use.
Well, enough of that. I've got to go haul some freight.
Later I plan to download the TM demo and see what it looks like. I write later and give you my impression.Until later,

Jul-12-01, 08:48 PM (EST) 10. "RE: TM4" Hi Tim,I just received my copy of the 4.1 update for Trainmaster 4. I've only run it for a short time and the only improvement I've noticed so far is that they have corrected the speed limit zones so they now agree with the tables for the routes in the manual that comes with the sim. That is a big improvement. Before it was really frustrating to come upon a 30 mile speed when you are making 60 miles/hour and have no chance to slow down. Now at least you can follow the table in the book and prepare for the lower limit. I wrote them a while back and told them about my problem with the sound on version 3.2. They said that was the fault of Microsoft for not supporting the old programs with the new Windows Me. Of course at that time they were sitting on the high horse, being the only decent Train sim around. Now that they have lost nearly all their potential customers to the new Microsoft Train Sim they may be more disposed to cater to old customers. I just don't know. I would really like to see them succeed, if for no other reason, just to keep Microsoft on its toes with some competition. Maybe the ideal solution might be for them to join Microsoft and incorporate the better features of their sims with Microsoft's sim. I'm afraid it all boils down to money. Microsoft has almost unlimited funds to back their ventures while Train Master is a small group working on a shoe string budget. They cannot afford the time and expense to give us a view of the train we are operating and so many other things that many of us have come to expect in computer sims, these days.
Being an old dog, I've developed a good imagination for things, listening to stories on the radio as a kid long before TV, I had to picture the characters and scenery in my minds eye, and of course books were a big thing in those days and again a good imagination was called for. Now with all the pictures and scenery in front of you, our imagination does not get much of a workout.Yes, you might find it interesting to download their demo. At least you'll get some idea of the difference in the way things work and a comparison with MSTS. I still much prefer Trainmaster for the way the brakes and the dynamic brakes work compared to MSTS. It takes quite a while for the compressed air to reach the last car of a 90 car train and the brakes to become effective. On MSTS, the brakes work instantaneously no matter how long the train is, just like the brakes on a car.Stay in touch Ted, let me know what you think of these things.Jim McCarthy Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jul-18-01, 10:19 PM (EST) 12. "RE: TM4" Jim,I've read your lengthy exploits with Trainmaster, enough to where I'm DYING to get a copy of TM 3.2 with the Trainbuilder, and guess what? They don't even have the DEMO for it anymore at Trainmaster and so far, no reply to my emails to them about it.Is there any chance I could speak to you about purchasing a copy from you (thru email) or know where I can get a copy of it, or even a download of the demo? Thanks in advance, I hope I don't sound too presumtious. And yes, I know all about TM 4.0, and am not that much interested in it, wasn't that impressed with the demo (I was REALLY disappointed with the lack of train slack, huh?).Grundman>Hi Tim,

Jul-21-01, 10:36 PM (EST) 15. "RE: TM4" I still have a copy of TM3.2 demo. It is about 1 mb in size and if you give me your email address I'll send it to you. It's kind of interesting about the sound disappearing and Windows being blamed for it. I ran TM 3.1 on my P150 for a long time with no problems. When I attempted to run it on my Pentiun 3 it was a no go with a 200 runtime error. This error was a result of the fact that the program was coded in Pascal and one particular file in the Pascal system established some sort of timer that couldn't handle Pentiums at 200 or above speeds. I searched around and found a patch for programs written in Pascal version 6 and earlier and found a patch which I ran against the TM3 exe program and after that the program runs fine, but without sound.I have created territory track files for TM3 and it's a shame that Microsoft or KUJU whoever built the track layouts didn't take a cue from Trainmaster about building their files. The TM track files take every speed restriction, every curve and change in grade level into consideration when these files are created. They are built using track charts or detailed profiles from the RR's engineering dept. It is a real chore but the results are real time train handling characteristics. I used to run these things and I can attest to the realism of Trainmaster products.TM4 continues to excel in train handling characteristics. I enjoy MSFT but it kind of gets frustrating when your train continually comes uncoupled and there is no way to get over the road in one piece!Ken Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jul-22-01, 03:27 PM (EST) 16. "RE: TM4" Hi Ken,
I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who likes TM v. 3.2. I have it and just about everything that goes with it, the Train Builder, and a couple of additional track disks.
I still use this stuff occasionally to check on the accuracy (or lack of accuracy) of MSTS. For that purpose, I like v. 3.2 much better than the latest version 4.

Jul-21-01, 00:07 AM (EST) 13. "RE: TM4" Hello Jim,It took me a while but here's my impression of the TM demo, written several days ago:"Well, I finally got around to trying the TM demo and I sure do miss seeing the engine and train. The sound is great, I think better than MSTS. I like that fact that the throttle is based on the 8 notches of the real thing. Also, the delay in the brakes has got to be more realistic than the TS.
But, seeing the cars snake across a crossover or bend around a curve is a must for me, so I'm going to see what I can do with Train Sim.
I've really been getting frustrated with MSTS lately though. I like switching a lot and the Whitefish Yard Switching activity keeps locking up. Have you had problems with lockups? The lockups I'm getting are very predictable."So, that's my delayed post. I made a detailed write-up of what I'm experiencing in TS in this post: http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/DCForumID3/1369.html. I'd be interested in hearing your input. As for the TM simulator, it appears to me after trying the demo and from some of your comments that the authors are really trying to make the dynamics of their sim realistic and I really like realism. But boy do I miss the eye candy. And I hope to provide some input to the TM team to let them know that for a visual guy like me, some sort of image of the engine and train would be a real plus, if not a must. Because without it, I guess my imagination just can't seem to do the trick. Like you said people who are developing TM are in a small organization and don't have the resources of a Micro$oft, they can only do what they can do. But, I want them know what I like, so they don't have to guess what's important to me.Well, I hope to hear from you Jim, I don't see a post from you in several days. I hope all is well with you.I'm going to try the MSTS dynamics update that I found for the engines and see what effect that has.Best Regards,

Jul-21-01, 02:39 AM (EST) 14. "RE: TM4" Hi Tim,
Glad to hear from you again. Sending a letter off to Trainmaster is a good idea. Many people, including me, would like to be able to see the train they are running. I've seen numerous notes here from people complaining about it. I don't know if that is within the realm of possibility for the Trainmaster people. I would imagine they read this forum to keep their finger on the pulse of their potential customers.
I haven't tried the activity that you mention as yet. I'll give it a try and report to you about it. I'm not much of a computer mechanic so I don't expect to be able to give you advice on your problem. I have played around with the Activity Editor and managed to make a couple decent activities. My only experience with the Route Editor is to follow the directions Wurger gave to eliminate some uncoupling problems on the Marias Pass route.
The bugs in Microsoft train simulator can be frustrating at times. Sometimes after a session with the MTS I fire up the Trainmaster sim and go at it. At least everything it has works as it should, no bugs. It helps restore my confidence in computers.
Trainmaster is promising to add more routes to their sim, I hope they can continue to improve it. Meanwhile I'll continue with Microsoft. Rome was not built in a day. Their flight simulator went through a long evolution before it reached the stage where it is now. I'm sure train simulator will also gradually improve and many of the bugs will be eliminated and we'll have new bugs to deal with.
Keep in touch Tim.
Sincerely,
Jim McCarthy Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jul-12-01, 09:24 PM (EST) 11. "RE: TM4" Tim look for a post by Wurger on the main Microsoft train sim forum here. He is posting another physics update. I used his last update although I made quite a few changes of my own. He gives the address of web site belonging to a fellow by the name of Krug. I have his little formula for computing many useful thing about trains. ie. Horsepower needed, tractive effort, effect of grades, and more. by the way the controlling grade eastbound over the Continental Divide in Marias Pass is
1.8%. I suggest you download Krugs formula, its very easy to use just plug in the factors you know and it spits out the factors you'd like to find out. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
