... that with the new MSTS, if it would be possible to "play the whistle"? Like, when an engineer on a steam loco pulls the whistle cord either hard or soft, and gets a high and low whistle sound (geez, I hope I made sense here ). Could it be done on a computer and with MSTS2? Just wondering, Mike
i.e. "quilling" the whistle or horn to create your own signature blasts.. ya I've been a big advocate of that before.. I had even gone so far as suggest to have it set up such that a joystick regulates the air/steam being drawn into the horn/whistle.. But we'll have to see..EDIT: it actually isn't so much a "high" or "low" whistle sound as it is related to the amount of air/steam drawn that makes certain bells/chambers play.. (that's when you get only a few notes of the given chord) the effect then is the sluring of notes to make the given chord as one pulls more on the chord or valve.. Of course on single chime horns/whistles, it will 'sound' as if it is high or low (i.e. loud or soft) due to how much is being drawn into it..
Well...You can cheat it in already now with MSTS 1, if you want, at least on those locos where you don't need the Bell. Replace the Bell sound with a slightly/tweaked different horn sound or whistle sound to match the one played by the engine when leaning on the regular horn / whistle, and then have fun playing around with the bell toggle and the horn toggle while running your train. Where they still use whistles today (and over here, many older electric locos of the Swiss Federal Railways and independent roads such as RhB still use "real" whistles instead of the electronically generated (!) horn sounds on newer equipment) a few engineers are very well known for having their distinct way of playing the whistle. So while the majority of engineers jsut punch the whistle button for a second, those individualists are actually playing "their tune" when approaching grade crossings. Lukas a.k.a Swissie
NWFreakI love the idea, and I have thought of it many times myself. If you have ever played Mircosoft's Xbox, you'll notice that the Xbox controller is equipped with 2 pressure-sensitive triggers. These triggers are excellent for racing games because the trigger responds to the amount of force you apply to it. Just like pushing your foot down on a gas pedal, but with your finger.I hope that raildriver will release a control panel with one of these pressure-sensitive triggers. Now if MSTS2 was equipped to handle varying whistle blasts, and if raildriver released something with this trigger, I would buy it at any price. It would probably be hell for the editors to equip each engine with 15 different whistle recordings so we could do this.P.S. another term for playing with the whistle, is "feathering".
Maybe they could work it into the mouse scroll wheel. Although it wouldn't be fair to those who didn't have scroll wheels on their mice. Ya never know... -Mike
That would be nice to have. Also now a days the thing is to hit the auto horn button that plays the --o- grade crossing sequence. I did a K5 that played the --o- by sounding the horn. But it got boring after a while, you couldnt play a single short blast.
It could be done on the computer if the it was programmed. It could be something like a quiet blast is just the spacebar and the louder blast on the horn is Shift + Spacebar at the same time... KWK100
