Why is there no smoke? – image 1

I've been looking at the screenshots of the Pennsy steamer, and have noticed that there is no smoke coming from the smokestack. Does anyone know why? Maybe in this game, the dynamic world includes a virtual Environmental Protection Agency. mrWM734

There's smoke. Look closly above the engine and you can see a little bit of smoke. I thought there wasn't smoke myself until I looked at the engine better. -->Jason Underwood<--

Now I see it. Usually when I drive an engine in the simulator, I get smoke that's somewhere between gray and black. I didn't expect that the engine would be clearstacking. mrWM734

Must have a good fireman.

<Future and Current BNSF Engineer (I'm only 12 years old but drove some real BNSF locomotives and plan to work for a railroad when I grow up.>RobertSomething I must point out in your "signature", is how you word the phrase, "drove some real BNSF locomotives". In America, any respectable railroader, or railfan, never says, "Drive a Train". Here in the U.S., we say, "Run a train". It is commonly said in England, and Train Simulator says it too, but it is incorrect here.So if you're talking with the guys from BNSF, instead of saying "drive a train, say "run the train". Using proper vocab like these with the railroaders and demonsrating basic knowledge will gain you respect. Maybe those cab rides will come along more often?

RE: Why is there no smoke?

It was common practice on most North American railroads to urge firemen to fire with a clean stack, and you can see a lot of evidence that this was done if you are ever able to see copies of the work of Lucius Beebe and others from the middle of the last Century. It was certainly more difficult to do, and a good grade of coal helped quite a bit; but a good fireman could do it: I've seen it done.It would be most realistic in a coal burner if the smoke were proportional to the coal loaded into the firebox, and diminished over time as the coal began to burn more completely. In an oil burner, the effect would be different, having to do with how much the atomizers were open. I don't know much about writing the code necessary to do this, but I have a hunch it would require separate code for coal and oil. -Phil

RE: Why is there no smoke?

If you'll notice in the screenshot, the signal is lit up three lights horizontially. On the Pennsy, this indicates a red board. So the train is sitting at a red signal in the picture. And a steam engine does not make nearly as much smoke sitting still, as it does working hard up a grade. This one of the factors that determines how much smoke an engine will make. I thought I would point out in case anyone else hadn't noticed it yet.

Last summer, I had a cabride in a Western Maryland 2-8-0, #734. While we were loading the coaches at Cumberland, the engine didn't make much smoke. When were going up Helmstetter's curve pulling seven coaches, the engine was shooting out lots of black smoke.mrWM734

RE: Why is there no smoke?

If you look at the short MSTS2 video which shows passengers getting on and off the train, there's a loco in the background putting out a fair amount of smoke.Regards, Nick (UK)

I just saw the movie. The smoke the engine in the background is putting out is light. It looks like the fireman is trying to save as much coal as possible. mrWM734

RE: Why is there no smoke?

Thanks mrWM734That is a perfect real world example. I'm hopeing to get a cab ride on that engine this summer because it doesn't sound like Ohio Central will be running much steam this year. You ever heard of Mike Manwiller, he works for the Western Maryland and he is the connection I might have to get a ride on the railroad.

Why yes, I met Mike. He was the engineer both times I had my cabrides in the engine. He even let me pull the whistle last summer. By the way, I made a model of 734, and it's in the file library.mrWM734
