Train Simulator 2 Impressions

Preview Earlier today we took a trip over to Microsoft's E3 booth where, for the first time ever, Train Simulator 2 is being shown. The game will feature numerous improvements on its predecessor, the most significant of which would have to be the fact that the game now takes place in a living, dynamic world. As the Microsoft representative showing the game to us took our train past a station, for example, we could clearly see animated people walking around and waiting to board one of the new non-player trains that now frequent the railroads. Sticking around to see them board the train, we could even see that since we were driving on one of the new historical routes, all the people were in period costume. We could also clearly see road traffic of the time period driving around in an area beyond the station and, incidentally, abiding by all the real-life traffic laws in place. Every aspect of Train Simulator 2 that we saw clearly demonstrated that UK-based developer Kuju is paying an awful lot of attention to detail and realism. The locomotives in the game, for instance, consist of up to 22,000 polygons in some cases, and since Microsoft and Kuju know their target audience well, we wouldn't mind betting that ever last rivet has been positioned exactly as it should be. That level of detail extends to the interiors of the trains as well, and in addition to being able to operate from the comfort of a fully realized 3D cab, you'll be able to visit the interiors of passenger carriages, including diner cars and the like. In all, the game will feature more than 100 different pieces of rolling stock. Truly dynamic weather and time-of-day lighting should also add a lot to the proceedings, although neither of these features had been fully implemented at the time of our demo. Train Simulator 2, while targeted squarely at train enthusiasts, will also cater to newcomers to the genre through the inclusion of a much-simplified control method. While the standard controls of the game will require you to perform every action a real engineer would, the easy mode's controls will consist of nothing more than a forward button and a backward button, ensuring that even young children who like trains should be able to have a lot of fun with it. It will be possible, in most instances, to derail trains in the game, and while Microsoft has stated that the derailments will be more realistic than those in the original game, the company was eager to point out that there'll be no people dying in accidents, and that a number of their railroad company partners have requested that it not be possible to derail their trains. Train Simulator 2 will ship with more than enough different trains and routes to keep most of you happy, but for those of you desperately wanting to re-create a particular journey in a particular locomotive, the game will also ship with a comprehensive editor package. We'll bring you more information on Train Simulator 2 as soon as it becomes available. By Justin Calvert, GameSpot

That's taking "positive corporate image" a bit too far. You don't see car companies telling racing games not to let their cars crash.-Jeff

LAST EDITED ON May-16-03 AT 11:07 PM (EDT)

I understand that a number of aircraft manufacturers and airlines have demanded that it not be possible for their aircraft to crash in any flight simulation, combat-sims included. In addition, United Technologies and their corporate members Pratt & Whitney and Sikorsky are demanding that no damage occur to (a) any simulated aircraft using P&W engines or (b) any helicopters from the Sikorsky stable.Further companies involved in aeronautics are expected to follow suit, whilst the manufacturers of motor vehicles are watching this with great interest. If the trend continues then the top-selling simulation for 2005 is anticipated to come from the "Huntin' Dumb Animals With A Pointed Stick" genre.Bruce.

Since,in general Europe seems(or seemed?)a bit more common sense oriented in regards litigation/PR could NS be the ones behind the no derail request?

If CN had had such a requirement on model railroading, then I wouldn't be able to count the number of times I would have been sued by CN when I had my old model railroad long ago.... Small 4x8 HO layout, was rare to get 3 laps without a derailment somewhere...... Then again, I didn't spend a whole lot of time tweaking everything....

Saw on the news yesterday that there was a big derailment in Arizona. Perhaps that railroad should sue the news media for showing it. lol

Well then, we'll have to run those non-derailing trains full throttle into each other, instead Lukas a.k.a Swissie

I guess the solution to this would be to only use non-standard loco's with fictional company names or historical ones. If the train sim community completely ignored the big railroads they might get the message. This is carrying political correctness too far! I don't want to see blood or gore when I derail but I was some cars all over the place.Bob

You may has well not have real physics involved if the train can't derail. You are on a down grade with a heavy train and you lose your brakes because you used up your air. At this point, you start gaining speed. You wind up going through a sharp curve at too high of a speed, guess what will probably happen? You will derail. Leaving this out will make it look bad.Edward K.

If Kuju was smart, then they wouldn't let the train derail, the rail would stick to the wheels of the train and will fly up with the train. So, it hasn't derailed yet since it is still touching the rails!

HAPPY NOW? It's not moving anymore.
It's still the same train but in another livery, that's all.

RE: Gamespot's First Impression of TS 2

Railways spend much time and energy trying to make there road accident free. I can understand that in the light of this that they wouldn't want to have there equipment shown in a wreck (virtual wreck) as a publicity thing. However I think if they carry on with what they had in the first one - the ability to turn that feature on and off then it becomes the users responcibilty to have those actions take place. This would remove the roads from there publicity problem as it is the user that is making that happen.I think that posting such pics are a problem especially when the graphics are getting better and better. If the railways have a problem with the concept of a derailment. The makers of the sim should ask if they use the possiblity of the train derailing in there training regimen. I bet they do - if the thought of derailing the train doesn't scare off perspective employees well I don't think it would be a problem for the general public.BTW I like the reports we are getting from E3. Sounding like solid gold to me man. It's even going to out sell MSTS1 which I'm sure is what they are shooting for..Ronson

Lets hope MSTS2 is as good as it looks, because a Simulator is only as good as its weakest feature. In MSTS1, there are many, but I would have to say the worst was the signalling and AI traffic. It's no good having 44'000 polygons sitting in a Mexican standoff that can't be resolved. As for derailments, I think it is should be as in MSTS1. Default is "derailments disabled" and hide the enable switch somewhere in the advance settings.

RE: Gamespot's First Impression of TS 2

As far as derailments go, I would rather NOT see the actual derailment, and go for a simple "Your Train Had Derailed" message. If I want to see demolition I'll stick with Destruction Derby or the like. This should satisfy any PR concerns for railroads, and I'd rather keep them happy. I hope my train wouldn't derail on my control anyways.I think the actual derailment should happen if the conditions warrent however. I think there should also be an option for less experienced operators to have the ability to continue at point of impact to allow them to continue were they left off. I'm not too worried about that though because resaving an activity as we go along was probably a requirement if you wanted to enjoy anything in V1 anyhow.Sean

RE: Gamespot's First Impression of TS 2

If the trains themselves can't derail what would be the point of avoiding one. Go through reds if you like or to fast.. This would be even worse I think for the roads. Here they have a chance to show what can happen if trains and lets say pedestrian traffic don't do what is expected of them. Getting people to think that derailments just don't happen would be worse then thinking they can???I also don't need to see what happened. I think in most instances where possilble the crew would bail out if disaster were upon them. So they would see it either. However and this has happened in recent years black box's sort of have been placed in the cab to record the incidents leading up to the derail. I think this could be implimented here to show what you did wrong and how it could be avoided in the future. As in real sims the object is to learn from your mistakes. There are so many other things that can stop a train that could be implimented.1) Traction Motor Failure. This would reduce the efficency of the locomotive. On a grade this could be a serious problem both up and down if the engine in question is cut out and Dynamic Brake Equiped.2) Complete loss of Prime Mover. Same as above but know the engine becomes a dead weight perhaps and a liability.3) Hot box - Dragging Equipment Alarm. This by rules require in most cases a stopped train and inspection. In the days of the caboose the conductor would move up one side and the engineer/brakemen the other. Also this would require the damaged equipment to be cut out and parked until repairs can be made. A slow order is instigated until a position for the damaged equipment can be reached.4) Slowed traffic ahead. The previous problems happening to a train ahead of yours could put yours on a different track or slow you down.5) Weather Conditions. Goes without saying.6) Crew Penalty. The crew has worked beyond it's allowed service hours and must rest.Just some thoughts on ways to stop your train without derailing.Ronson
