LAST EDITED ON May-15-03 AT 12:05 PM (EDT)

When MSTS can create scenery and operation comparable to this , then maybe there is room for criticism of TRAINZ...but until then...don't knock it till you have really tried it...This is a coastal 3ft narrowgauge route, climax with logging consist... the waterfall works with motion and sound...of course there are rail and car sounds, coupler sounds, and in this scene ocean sounds also(not seen, but behind the camera view here).I used to feel the same way as you about TRAINZ till someone gave me "Ultimate Trainz Collection" for my birthday...WOW...everything works...front couplers, turntables...everthing...and a Route Editor that is a dream ....just look at the blending of textures in the scene! Almost all 3rd party content(thousands of them, real quality) is available for download from Auran's "Download Station"(free). What may be the best thing of all...Auran really listens to their customers...they actually participate and comment in the Trainz forums...and adjust content and function of the program acording to what their customers want...WHAT A CONCEPT!
When is the last time you read a comment from Microsoft in this forum?

RE: This sounds Familiar doesn't it

I do go look at the Trainz forums. But as far as I can tell you are still playing with trains. They have made activity creating an exercise in programming. I want a purpose to run the train, just not play. Maybe one day they will make it easy to do as MSTS. But until then I will not waste my time or money on it.Kevin Arceneaux

RE: This sounds Familiar doesn't it

You really aren't familiar with TRAINZ, are you?Besides formal activities like you create (called Scenarios in Trainz), anytime you want to drive on a route, you can create an activity on the spot, inserting consist and AI engines and their consist anywhere you want on the route...I have not found a limit to the number of these consist...All AI trains can be operating at once if you like...
They will operate on their own or you can join any operating train or consist at any time and take control......the focus of what you want to do is up to you...running the rails or working the yard...
I usually focus on 1 or 2 objectives and complete them and then go on to another consist if I want to...
You can save this placement of consist and engines if you like and use it over and over again.
Oh yes, if I derail or wreck a train, the world keeps going on and I can adjust my made up "Activity" on the fly, carrying it on as long as I want to...it's up to me.Yes, the formal activities are not that easy to create, but they are fixing that in "Trainz Railroad Simulator 2004" where the activity is created in their route editor... not programing. It will take minutes to create activities that can include operating industries that produce products for delivery and require raw materials for operation...these can be loaded on and off your trains and you can load it yourself if you like (you can physically see it happening).ALL things considered ...it is just plain FUN and not work!! I definitely don't consider it a waste of time or money...
UTC Trainz NOW is what MSTS2 would like to be...

Trainz is fine for you, but not for me.
MSTS installed with 582 engines, 1465 cars, 8 routes intalled (15 more on CD), understanding how the damn thing works (most of the time).
Trainz - nada, just doesn't interest me.
MSTS2 is where my money will go. As a MS user since DOS 2 and Win2.0, I have come to expect the kind of support they offer and it does not bother me. Kevin Arceneaux

Having to pay for 4 versions of Trainz in two years, compared to 2 paid versions of MSTS. Another first for Trainz, the most expensive to stay current with. lol! Though to be fair, upgrade from 1.0 to 1.3 was a free download IIRC, and there's a discount when upgrading to the current version.

1st they were a model train sim, then they tried to be a train sim, now the want to be like Railroad Tycoon. They need to figure out what they want to be when they grow up.I don't know; first it's trains with no real physics. Then trains plus the physics. And now trains with real physics plus simulation of the surrounding world to provide purpose for running those trains.Sounds like consistent growth to me......for what's worth, there's the same 'Railroad Tycoon' aspects in the first msTS... they're just broken like so many other parts of the sim.

"Sounds like consistent growth to me..."Sounds like that to me too. Capturing both the MR and sim fans is a smart play. Add customer support and that's a winning combination. I don't pay much attention to the Trainz stuff but somebody just posted some shots at avsim not too long ago and I liked what I saw. The only way to duplicate the ground detail I know of would take hours upon hours to do in MSTS. I'm all for Auran putting out a great rail product.Rich Garber

I have not shared any particullar interest in Trainz since day one.Installed the demo .. tried the game .. uninstalled the demo !!I do however appreciate Aurans involvement with the customerIf anything ... I hope Aurans product is good enough to make Microsoft try harder. That is my extenet of interest in the product unfortunatly.LaterTim Kent

LOL! Same here! It looked fine and all, but the thing that came to my mind right off was, 'dern, another train game, that's all I need.' So I took it off. Maybe it's low tolerance to non-violent gaming? I dunno. Bring on Falcon 5! Rich Garber

RE: This sounds Familiar doesn't it

Although I'm an MSTS user, i keep an open eye on the development of Trainz. It sure has a more organiclook to it, unlike MSTS, where the objects seem to be alien to the landscape and are just there to give the eye something to rest on, Tracks and Scenery seem to be one in Trainz, giving the whole thing a more complete look. This is not meant to dowgrade Routes like Sea View, East Metro, Ohio Rail, Semmering (freeware), or the Pro Train series. They are excellent. It is just an observation I made.

RE: This sounds Familiar doesn't it

You have probably described best what I'm seeing too. There's a sterile look to MSTS. Trainz to me used to have a 'ghoulish' look but lately the screenshots are looking picture post card. The one thing I do like about MSTS is the screen pic is sharp. Trainz shots still look a bit fuzzy to me. I reckon it's going to boil down one day to a dilemma I used to be in with the flight sims. FS looks great and has a tremendous amount of features, but I preferred using Fly because it was so incredibly easy to use. What's cool is whatever Auran started out with, it's shaping up into something quite intriguing.Rich Garber

I haven't seen the pics Rich is referring to, but I sure like what I read up above in the post by "fikalaker". If I'm understanding his post correctly, it does indeed sound like a case of Trainz evolving with the growth of this new V scale hobby. Let's face it: With the advent of MSTS1 and Trainz, we are seeing a new hobby emerge. A hobby that is, frankly, still quite embryonic. I think these are exciting times for the V scale hobby, and the next two years will likely prove to be very interesting. As for me and Trainz, I think the thing that has held me back from trying it is my impression that it takes a bunch of horsepower to run it. My mid-range system is taxed to the max just to run MSTS1 at a decent level of detail. Dreading to see what it would do with the more CPU/vid card intensive MSTS2 or Trainz. In all, sounds like Trainz is good for the MSTS user... in that it perhaps has forced Kuju off its duff to fix and upgrade the things about MSTS1 that have been so irksome to many. Once I upgrade, Trainz 2004 could very well find a permanent place on my hard drive.Andre Ming

André, are you sure that Kuju are actually doing the development for TSv2?
I have my suspicions that, at the very least, they are not the principal developer, as they were with TSv1.Bruce.

Highly doubtful, because Auran is teh creator of the Jet engine. TRS2004 will implement v2 of the Jet engine from what I hear. MSTS2 will use a engine that was developed by them.
