Potential to get worse? – image 1

LAST EDITED ON Feb-03-04 AT 11:07 PM (EST)

WTF!? Come ON, SSW!EVERY post has the potential to get worse. The point at which you capped off the MSTS2 thread it was a reasonable discussion. If you are going to take such dictatorial liberties as to lock threads before they even get a start, based upon the likelihood of developing into anything more than a mild disagreement then you might as well just shut the whole damned forum down. It'll be real easy to mod a forum noone can, or is willing, to post in then.Secondly, locked because of language? Are you Amish or something? Webster's Dictionary defines "bastard" (presuming of course that that is the word you find so terribly offensive) as follows:Main Entry: 1bas·tard
Pronunciation: 'bas-t&rd
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English, from Old French, probably of Germanic origin; akin to Old Frisian bost marriage, Old English bindan to bind
1 : an illegitimate child
2 : something that is spurious, irregular, inferior, or of questionable origin
3 a : an offensive or disagreeable person -- used as a generalized term of abuse b : MAN, FELLOW
- bas·tard·ly adjective
Which is a word in fairly common usage in any medium of communication you would care to choose and considered by most not to be an expletive. If your intention is to turn this forum into Sunday school then I'll be outta here when you start quoting scripture. And, yes, I am an athiest.

RE: Potential to get worse?

I realise this forum in particular needs to have clear and decisive moderation - but don't go nuts with the locking. Many mods suffer from abuse of power.Patronism is a pet hate of mine, and many others too. Koz

>Many mods suffer from abuse of power. Agreed. I can see the logic of trying to head off a post before it turns sour, but locking a thread because it has the potential to get out of hand is a bit iffy.A thread has just the same amount of potential to stay civil. It's next to impossible to divine the outcome of a thread. Many of the most informative posts I can remember sprang from healthy, and sometimes slightly heated discussions. If they had been locked when the post looked like it had the potential to get worse, I personally would have lost out on some useful knowledge. I'm sure I'm not the only one who learned something from these "borderline" posts.I can also understand that in many instances, if you wait until the post actually does deteriate, the damage is done.So basically, I see it as a catch-22. Darned if you do, darned if don't... All I can hope is that you practice disgression.-Jeff

Psychologically spoken all the agressivity arising in this forum is just frustration over the delay and for instance the possible cancellation of MSTS 2 turned outside...

>Many mods suffer from abuse of power. And the next thing you see is this thread locked/deleted due to abuse of power, like what a previous(as in long time ago) Mod did.

-----You are reading my signature now, don't waste your time reading it!-----
Or probably, maybe you should waste your time reading it.
Eh, where did my signature go?
Oh, here it is, the one you are reading right now? Can't you see it? I know I know, it's probably too bright to see it.
Hey, look at my avatar, nice right? I drew it with my own hands holding the mouse in Paint, with the pencil tool(and the Filling tool!)!
It's a picture of me in Planet Stooopid, where everything is the same as what you call "Earth" except that we are called "aliens" in your planet.
Anyway, I warned you not waste time reading my signature! You have just wasted probably about 30 seconds reading it, where you could have spent the time doing better things, like maybe reading the next post below if there is one...

RE: Potential to get worse?

>If members are not happy about the way the Forum is being
>run by Moderators, talk to the BOSS ! Ermmm... Go for the throat, right? -Sigh- Well, many people take extreme offense when you "go over their head" instead of just telling them your concerns. Going to "the boss" usually just creates personal grievances between you and this person, which may be impossible to resolve...If however, you calmly state your reason of concern to the person in question, many times they see your point of view and all is well. All we are saying Otto, is that perhaps a little too much caution is being taken. No need to go to "the boss" over such a small thing. "The boss" is always the last resort in my opinion.-Jeff
