This isn't really important, but I just thought about whether MSTS 2 could be on DVD.Certainly it would allow a large amount of data to be presented on one disc.Possibly both CD and DVD.I guess it doesn't really matter (unless it's DVD only and you don't have a DVD drive!)

RE: MSTS 2 on DVD???

DVD is a more costly media not needed for DATA-Only software ? Many Gamers also still use DVD-less Computers ! Neither my WIN-98SE nor the WIN-XP Home has one as I prefer to listen to Music or watch Films on my dedicated HI-HI or digital TV equipment ! For that reason alone you will see some Computer Magazines being published in two version, featuring DVD Freebies on one and CD-ROM give-aways on the other.O t t o

RE: MSTS 2 on DVD???

>DVD is a more costly media not needed for DATA-Only software
>? Actually it can be a less expensive media depending on usage. Microsoft's MSDN Library is now offered as a choice of 1 DVD or 3 CD's. I prefer the DVD format for convenience. All stored information is DATA, the higher storage capacity of a single DVD vs. CD makes DVD the logical choice of the future for any kind of bulk material such as a data library.

RE: MSTS 2 on DVD???

Adding a DVD drive to my machine or design one into the next I am going to build is costly in relation to the few occasions I might need to have one.I don't want to say "Hands up all those who have no DVD drive in their machine" ? It could cause a fatal messages overflow in the Forum ! But having said that, I got an external DVD-RW I can share amongst all my machines, so there ! O t t o

RE: MSTS 2 on DVD???

That would be nice, but for some reason, DVD is taking a while to catch on as far as games are concerned. For me, I'd much rather have 1 DVD instead of 5 CDRoms. They could offer both, but I can't see them doing that. For simplicities sake, I bet they go with only one format.-Jeff

RE: MSTS 2 on DVD???

I haven't been keeping up with the latest and the greatest, but are the DVD drives, especially the recording type that are out now good for long term use? I thought I read somewhere that there is no set standard or that the standard we have now could change.Edward K.

Seriously, I'm sure the standard we have now will change eventually, but the DVD spec(s) is indeed set.The big question was when Circuit City (and DIVX) were trying to implement their own standards. If they had their way, any DVD player (this was before consumer PC DVD drives were available) purchased before the standard they were proposing would be a doorstop. Completely incompatible with new releases. But that is long over and done with. In other words, you can purchase a DVD drive with no concerns of it being useless tomorrow. (Even the recorders)-Jeff

in my opinion I don't care but DVD-ROM would be logical for those who have DVD drives and CD-ROM's as appropriate

RE: MSTS 2 on DVD???

Just as good if not better than CD. I'm running an HP DVD+RW in my system (I've seen the internal version around for $200 or so). Want to backup your Train Sim install on a single CD-R (or all the separate downloads you've accumulated)? You can get 4.7 GB on DVD+RW compared to 700 MB on a CD-RW. I'm almost at the limit with 4.37 GB in my Train Simulator folder, and only 3.7 GB in the download folder. You can always use WinZip or NetZip to compress the files to give you more room on a disc. The DVD burner was the best purchase I ever made for my system (especially after the rebate check made it free - lol). Knowing you have a reliable backup for stuff like Train Sim is very comforting.Life of a disc depends quite a bit on how you store the disc. Store it in the case in a nice cool, low humidity area for the longest life. Store either DVD or CD in direct sunlight and the disc is worthless (anyone ever left a CD inside a car and had the disc ruined?). I represent HP products in retail stores, but I could not find any numbers for you quickly. All our DVD recorder sheets say is "long lasting." But, optical media is very reliable, especially when it is properly cared for.Hope that helps. Feel free to PM me or post if you have more questions, Edward.

>How can MSTS 2 be on DVD? you can run trains, but you can't
>build consists. How can you build consists on DVD? We're speculating about the possibility of the MSTS 2 application being sold and distributed on a single DVD rather than multiple CD's as is the current version. In either case you'd still need to physically install the application on a hard disk to actually run the sim, as is the case now.

RE: MSTS 2 on DVD???

I gather Xbox features both a DVD ROM drive and a hard drive. I also gather it uses a modified version of DirectX and uses a 8xx86 derivitive CPU.I gather Playstation 2 uses a DVD ROM drive also. Both units have music CD and DVD movie playing capability. With the add on infrared remotes they would make a seperate DVD player, as well as a media switching device, unnessesary. As far as Gamecube's mini drive's inability to play either full size CDs or DVDs, I don't know what Nintendo is thinking of. If it's portability, the Gamecube isn't realy much bigger than the mini PSOne units Sony is marketing.

>I gather Xbox features both a DVD ROM drive and a hard

>and uses a 8xx86 derivitive CPU. Yes. Xbox has a 5x DVD ROM drive and an 8GB hard drive. (9GB on some systems) It has a 733MHz Intel PIII processor. It runs on a modified Win2000 kernel. (hackers have succesfully booted an Xbox running Linux as the OS) The Xbox also has a built in ethernet card.>I gather Playstation 2 uses a DVD ROM drive also. Yes it does.>Both units have music CD and DVD movie playing capability.

Xbox on the other hand requires you to purchase the remote to enable DVD playback. (otherwise the unit has no IR port)The Xbox can also rip music CDs to the internal hard drive to use as sort of a juke box. Games supporting the "custom soundtrack" mode allow you to listen to the music you recorded on the HD while playing the game. Not many games support this though.>As far as Gamecube's mini drive's inability to play either

RE: MSTS 2 on DVD???

I was shocked a couple of months ago when I went into Best Buy and found out that there were FOUR different formats for DVDs. Finally bought a player that could read all four. I would guess that the majority of the computer DVD units can also read all four formats. However, they probably only record in one of the four.My guess is the reason the industry has been slow to accept DVD's is this lack of a standard. The manufacturer has to choose a format. If people who take it home do not have a unit, labled DVD, that can read it, they are upset. From a customer relations stand point, I would guess CD will remain the dominate media for a while longer.

I know M$ already ships some of it Developer Sofware in DVD format. It can also stimulate sales of DVD drives and a reduction in piracy (for a while) since DVD Burners are not as common as traditional CD Burners.Robert

RE: MSTS 2 on DVD???

Jeff,The format is how the information is written to the disk. The things you list are all files that can be placed on DVD, but what the format is how it is placed on the disk. There are four ways or sequences that can be used. A good DVD player can read all 4, but I am sure there are many out there that can't.

>are four ways or sequences that can be used. A good DVD
>player can read all 4, but I am sure there are many out
>there that can't. Ah, I see... Clashing nomenclature. What you call a format and I call a format are two different things. I believe you are talking about the various DVD encoding (data compression) methods. Such as DTS, DTS Audio, DTS ES, Dolby AC-3, Dolby EX, Pro Logic, Pro Logic 2, etc... (there are many more than four) These are simply different ways of storing information to DVD media using the same "rules" for want of a better term. Since all of the different specs mentioned above must conform to the same standard, (DVD-Video) I call that a "format". But you are correct. Higher end DVD-Video players can read most of these specs, but cheaper players might only be able to read AC-3 and Pro Logic. DVD-Audio and DVD-ROM are also seperate and largely incompatible formats that you can stick on DVD media. All DVD-A players can read DVD-V format, but only higher end DVD-V players can read DVD-A. And no DVD-A or DVD-V player can read DVD-R, yet most DVD-R players can read DVD-V format, and some can even read DVD-A.Confusing isn't it? -Jeff
