How about a GEOGRAPHY EXTRACTOR for the next MSTS. Something like the geometry extractor, but when you bring it up, it will be with the actual terrain of that whatever area of the world you choose instead of a bare, flat, green area. I would be more interesting laying tracks through the terrain that is there rather than the other way around. To put in a "Geography Extractor" may be very complicated since your talking the entire world, but it is already done to a lesser extent on Flight-sim. Any thoughts, comments?
At ground level you need a whole lot more terrain information than you do when flying above it. Are you willing to pay for the 10 or 20 dvd's that it would require to have decent dem information for the whole world? Never mind that for most of the world getting 1 degree by 1 degree of 10 meter DEM is several hundreds of $$$s.In short, it ain't gonna happen.David Beach.Palouse & Lewiston
Standardized \global\tsection.dat file now at build00020.
I agree it would be a massive amount of data at the detail level required for MSTS, but the improvement could be nothing more than allowing you to import the Dem info (in one of several formats perhaps) during the RGE process, and make it a clean start.Martyn T. I agree it would take a lot of cd's for the entire world, but how many would it take for any given area such as California-Nevada or a similar size area in the east such as New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut?
Yeah but it's nice to dream though. *sigh* (the 10m DEMs for my route would set me back about $800 Cdn. $100 for each 1:50,000 map sheet seems awfully steep to me. )As it is the only free data available to me is 3 arcsec (90m) resolution.
