Okay, I don't know how possible this is, but the one thing I REALLY want to see in MSTS 2 is SEMI-REALISTIC-LOOKING OVERHEAD WIRE. Okay, now I won't be ridiculous and wish for 100% detail like modelling PRR catenary around Philadelphia and its downright mess of wire down to the last frickin' detail (which would be a downright mess to even copy down on paper... ^_^;; ), but I mean, if catenary must be modelled, don't just use some frickin' trolley wire, at least try and simulate a curving catenary-curve support wire in between posts and maybe tension wires on PRR catenary that hold the wires in place and an insulator or two... -_-;;I don't know... One of my biggest pet peeves about MSTS 1 is the catenary. Am I out of my mind for wanting some decent looking overhead wire?*imagines a TGV running at full speed under trolley wire*
*wire snaps, pantograph hits multiple gantries or poles, big mess ensues* X_X

RE: My kingdom for some decent overhead wire in MSTS 2!

Hi,
Do you know the meaning of minimum hardware to drive MSTS 2.
It means some visual compromises in order the "poor" customers could buy and somehow enjoy the "slide show".
Catenary system is very demanding attribute which bring heavy penalty on the frame rate on every computer, but especially on the lower end machines. Moreover, from the operating aspect, the catenary detail has in fact no meaning for the driver but as I mentioned, has a strong meaning for the video card.
In my opinion, the most detailed item which should be is the driver's desk and in virtual 3D cab, the whole cabin should be as detailed as possible.Catenary wires and poles are rather "eye candy".Adam

Hi guys,> In my opinion, the most detailed item which should be is the driver's desk and in virtual 3D cab, the whole cabin should be as detailed as possible.Catenary wires and poles are rather "eye candy".May I disagree slightly? Without pushing the computer system too far beyond what it can handle, it could be quite an improvement if MSTS 2 allowed for each route to at least have its own catenary texture file (such as the track textures aCleanTrack1.ace for the trackbed and aCleanTrack2.ace for the rail heads can easily be modified and traded inbetween MSTS 1 routes). With a "aCleanWire.ace" in a routes Textures folder it would be fairly easy to have one route use a single trolley wire (with the rest of the catenary texture alphaed out), another route have a catenary type overhead wire, a third route making use of an overhead contact rail (yes, that also exists, also I personally think it's ugly as hell), or a fourth route using a copper-colored brand new wire.Small effort, big results.Cheers, and hoping the relevant people do indeed monitor this forum tooLukas a.k.a Swissie

RE: My kingdom for some decent overhead wire in MSTS 2!

Two minor points:Rendering catenary is not demanding... see Trainz, from the screenshots I've seen Trainz renders catenary in a much nicer way than MSTS.Also, some route designers have come up with entire catenary systems for MSTS which are placed as scenery objects and look quite good. See for instance this thread in the French screenshots forum,

Clem,
I don't inted to be rude but I afraid that you don't know what do you talk about.
Trainz has completely different graphics engine (AuranJet 1.0) which is more efficient than the one used by Kuju in MSTS.
Even so, on routes equipped with detailed catenary, the frame rate become be choppy.
But look here in MSTS 1.0. If you will install a freware add on named LGV Med 2.1 or RER Ligne C 1.0 (all french routes with detailed catenary) in the stations vicinity the frame rate drops to 12-15 FPS, and this happening on machine equipped with P4 3.06 GHz with GeForce 4 Ti 4600 video card.
The same problem has been in BVE (I hope you heard about it). Here the developer release three versions with main differency in the catenary detail in order a weaker computers could cope with texture processing.
Anyhow, MSTS 2 is probably already closed for any changes, hence all posts here are worthless.Adam

I would be satisfied, if it was no more detailed or better looking that it is now, provided that you could seperate electrified from non-electrified routes or tracks.J. H. Sullivan
