It is a little known fact that steam loco's chuff at a constant four chuffs per wheel revolution. In MSTS-I, the chuff rates on the Scotsman and 380 were out of synch with the wheels. Will MS or Kuju remedy this mistake in MSTS-II? Better yet--make an option under the "Sound" options menu that lets you adjust the chuff rate anywhere from 1 to 16 chuffs per wheel revolution. Anyone agreeing with me so far?

RE: Steam Loco Chuff Rate Synch Remedy

It is a little known fact to who, people living under rocks? The next thing you will be telling me is that a compound locomotive only chuffs twice per revolution.BTW, the Scotsman is a three cylinder locomotive, the chuffs should not be perfectly synced like a two cylinder locomotive would.JS

RE: Steam Loco Chuff Rate Synch Remedy

OK...so I was incorrect on the "little-known-fact" part. Anyways, I found out that one cylinder has two chuffs per wheel revolution, so times the number of cylinders by two to get your answer:Two cylinders (standard)=4 chuffs
Three cylinders (simple, such as on Scotsman)=6 chuffs
Four cylinders (two-frame artic)=8 chuffs
Six cylinders (three-frame artic*)=12 chuffsAnd so on.*Example: Virginian 2-8-8-8-2 and 2-8-8-8-4 "triplexes".

RE: Steam Loco Chuff Rate Synch Remedy

Actually the problem in MSTS is that the "chuffs" or any engine sound are linked to the train speed and not wheel revolutions at all. In other words there is no syncing at all. In Trainz, the sound is linked to the throttle position. This also sucks when running steam.Hopefully MSTS2 and TRS2004 will fix this problem. (keeping fingers crossed)

RE: Steam Loco Chuff Rate Synch Remedy

Hopefully. It'd make it a lot easier to detect wheelslip
on steam locos. Gee, I've got the reverser at 75, the
brakes released and the regulator wide open, why am I
not moving?Lloyd

RE: Steam Loco Chuff Rate Synch Remedy

Are you guys still using the default scotsman and 380 sounds for steam loco's? I hope not! There have been quite a few improvements made available. These give you better (but not perfect) chuff rate sync and mimicing of wheelslip. Some of it is available in the download library. The work done by myself is available at www.uktrainsim.com, and at a few other european sites.
