All switching/shunting fanatics, report for duty. It may already be too late for MSTS 2, but it's worth a shot anyway to see if we can get them to fix that godforsaken front coupler. Send/don't send is difficult, to say the least, and by itself will lock up a medium spec machine forcing a reboot, so most people have gotten in the habit of clicking on don't send. I currently have the resources I didn't have when I first bought the sim, 1 gig of RAM and a high speed DSL connection. Send/don't send assumes that the machine is already connected to the internet when it does its thing, so I've taken to making sure my DSL is connected before starting trainsim, and every time I get the frozen screen from using the front coupler I hit the "S" key on the keyboard. That's important, the "S" key is the shortcut to send the error report, and all too often the send/don't send dialogue box pops up BEHIND the frozen trainsim screen, so the assumption is you have a lockup and send/don't send didn't load. It's there all right, and all you gotta do if you're already connected to the web is hit the "S" key and off she goes. This calls for a maximum effort bombardment campaign to saturate the target with front coupler error reports, so use those front couplers frequently and hit the "S" key every time you get a lockup. Future switching/shunting fanatics are counting on us, and two years of verbal abuse have been ignored, so it's time to take the gloves off. Give 'em hell, men.

RE: SEND - DON'T SEND for FRONT COUPLER BUG.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-18-03 AT 07:31 PM (EDT)

I haven't ever heard of anyone getting any feedback from using Send/Don't Send. The cynical part of me would think that (due to the frequency of it happening) this was their way of 'measuring' how many systems were using the product vs. just buying and not using!!!Martyn T. Griffin

RE: SEND - DON'T SEND for FRONT COUPLER BUG.

I am behind you on this one Sniper. Along with your idea, why don't we also send an email to both Kuju and Microsoft. Microsoft has a feedback area where you can send them email. I sent an email to Microsoft concerning this issue weeks ago. Who knows, maybe we can get some sort of response from them if they get enough email. As far as being too late for MSTS2, I don't think so. I believe this issue may have been missed because of the beta testers that were doing the testing. We can only hope that Microsoft has a better idea on what should be tested and how it should be tested this time around.

RE: SEND - DON'T SEND for FRONT COUPLER BUG.

Already tried that numerous times, the feedback link is always "service not currently available".Martyn, "I haven't ever heard of anyone getting any feedback from using Send/Don't Send.", I heard that somebody got a reply, I think you have to somehow set it up so they have your email address. I don't think that's included in the report.First hurdle, obviously, is getting the error report to send in the first place. A minimum spec system with a 56k dial up modem is highly unlikely to do anything other than lock up if they try to send, and anything less than 256 megs of RAM is iffy at best too. I don't know if they did that on purpose, but they never got an error report from me the first year, until I had 384mb RAM and a DSL line. I think it's a pretty good bet that a lot of trainsimmers were in the same boat, click on send and end up having to reboot. So a *&^%$#!load of people with problems, but MS never knew it since they weren't receiving the error reports.Hmm. I just now tried to see if the feedback link was working, and now I can't even find the link. Anybody know where it is, post it in here. Anybody manages to actually get thru, front coupler randomly locks up, crashes, or send/don't send, front coupler only engages when backing away instead of moving forward (look closely, the reason you have to hit it harder with the front coupler is because it's actually coupling on the rebound), which makes it difficult to uncouple. Real freight cars other than specialty side dump cars and the like can be facing either direction, the ones in the sim have a "designated" front and back coupler, which causes coupling problems in some configurations, and the wheels rotate backwards and the trucks pivot the wrong way on curves when "reversed" in a consist. All these problems are probably related, and I strongly suspect they know absolutely nothing about it. I'm being charitable with that surmise, because the alternative is they know but don't care.
