Does those 3d cabs mean that all the controls will work – image 1

Look at almost any engine in MSTS 1. They are many controls that MS doesn't deem important. I would like it a lot if you could use at least some of these.Really, who dries a train soley on the reverser, throttle, dynamic brake, engine brake, and train brake! Sure, they are a few more things you can control, but really, how much difference does unlimited sand in MSTS 1 make?Any thoughts? Will I have to wait until MSTS 3?Thanks!

RE: Does those 3d cabs mean that all the controls will

basically...there really isnt anything else to 'control'.....besides the radio feature(s), but for those to work we need some pretty damn smart AI.

Hmm, have you ever read a drivers manual of any engine?
If you haven't, I can say that there are _lots_ of 'features' that
MSTS doesn't include.
http://gelwood.railfan.net/manual/sd45-sec2.html <- there's a good example.
For MSTS2, I would like to have some engine start and shutdown procedures(like checking the brakes, oil pressure, compressor..)

RE: Does those 3d cabs mean that all the controls will

Waterbool,
Have you ever ran a locomotive? As the previous post stated, MSTS includes all the commonly used items. Most engineers usually don't have to fool with the circuit breakers for the toilet or water cooler/refrigerator duing a run.I'd guess the vast majority of MSTS users would not be interested in taking the time to do an air test, although you can certainly simulate it now, aside from cutting out the brake valve on an intitial terminal test.It is cool to hear a locomotive starting up, but, who wants to simulate opening all the cylinder cocks, barring the engine over or bumping the start switch and then closing them again? Not to mention holding the fuel pump switch until you've got fuel and then holding the layshaft and start switch.I'm really confused on your statement about the compressor. Checking the oil level is about it. Oil level OK, start locomotive. Oil level low, add oil, start locomotive.Maybe someone will come up with an add-on MSTS2 Locomotive Diesel Shop where all the activities on starting a locomotive and getting it on line will be simulated. After about a dozen times, it will lose it's appeal.Except, it is cool to hear them start up! That sound has never lost it's appeal for me.David

I'd like to acutally be able to do all that. Maybe they could include a "Realistic" or "Basic" control toggle for people who just want to drive. I'd love doing air tests, starting the train, controlling the cab lights, turning on heaters, etc.Looks Like a Pony Does those 3d cabs mean that all the controls will work – image 2 RUNS LIKE A STALLION

What you guys are talking about is similar to CFS when trying to start the aircraft maunualy instead of just pressing "E". Difficult as heck but fun when you finaly make it. It'd be cool if all those things would be simulated. Although tending the fire and wait 3 hours for the water to start boiling would be quite boring, unless you could get out of the loco and walk around lubing all the moving parts and empty the ashpan plus alot of other things. /JonatanSteam rules!Does those 3d cabs mean that all the controls will work – image 3

I drove a locomotive, they should have advanced, realistic, and basic.

David,
In FS2002 (Flight Simulator) for all those who are crazy about reality, there is situation called "cold and dark cockpit".
Of course start up procedure of big aircraft like Boeing 747-200
is a tedious procedure but there are "pilots" who enjoy this job.
Even opening the electric locomotive is asossiated with much "walk arround" activity as I saw in one video describing this procedure on Austrian 1044 electric loco. I'd like to see the same level of knobology as exhibited in Flight Simulator.Adam

RE: Does those 3d cabs mean that all the controls will

Well, for a cab you got many controls.
for example: head light control, ditchlight control, rear head light, rear ditch light(if applicable) cab interior lights, gauge lights, to name a few of the lighting possibilitys.Aswell as EOT info, the counter(for distance traveled), on certain engines-current and predicted speed.
There are LOTS of things that can be included. and most should be.
Those are the important ones i believe you should be able to work.
there are many more.

RE: Does those 3d cabs mean that all the controls will

I do agree with a working head end device for the EOT. Get tired of switching views to make sure the rear has cleared a switch, speed restriction, etc. Most ditch lights are now wired to the main headlight control. On when headlights on full, off when on dim.David

RE: Does those 3d cabs mean that all the controls will

Yeah, really.
Don't know about CN engines, only run US engines. Some of the older units had a switch to manually turn the ditch lights front/rear on/off. Even a lot of them have been modified so the ditch lights work with the headlight switch.Oh, unless you are talking about the circuit breakers. The vast majority of the items on the circuit breaker panel are never touched while running. Turn them on at start and leave them alone unless one trips.Cab lights are personal preference I guess. Good for entering the cab at night and getting everything set up. Not so good for night vision while running. I always use a small penlight to read paperwork, etc instead of the cab light.David

RE: Does those 3d cabs mean that all the controls will

cool.
what RR do you work for?I think MSTS 2 should allow you to shut down units, have errors, like a circut tripping and such.Just lookin at a CN SD75I manual- and there are other light switches etc that could be included.
What MS should do is pick up a manual from NS for a Dash9 and include all features listed in it. maybe not startin locos or other stuff. but lights, computer systems, switches.
what would also be nice is a removable reverser- like its always in the cab but you have to click on it and drag it into the slot. then if you wanted to switch units in your consist, you'd have to pick it up and switch units. after doing the procedures required to switch units.thats wishin for a lot but it would be "as real as it gets"

White River.Being able to switch cabs would be nice. Always having to find a wye and turn the power is not very "real", at least in modern day operations.I still think an auto-start sequence would be nice, just for the sound!David

I guess for those that might enjoy doing all that it would be fun but it sounds like an awful lot of work. I'm happy just driving the choo choo and gawking, heheh.

I fire up a diesel at least once a day. David's right, it won't add much to the sim after a dozen times of doing it. Check the air oil. Blow out the cylinders. Close the cylinder cocks. Start the engine. Let it run, then check engine oil and water and do a walkaround inspection. I've got it down to a point where I have that engine fired up and ready to go in 20 minutes or less. Now a steam locomotive, on the other hand, is a little more involved. Our locomotives have hydrostatic lubricators that keep the air pump lubricated, and need to be set properly before the air pump is started. What would be kind of cool is to see more in the way of equipment failure while out on the line. Things like overheated engines, burned out traction motors, worn out electrical relays and solinoids, or even a weak fuel pump that can't keep up with anything past Run 3. (I've seen all of this happen in real life.) Even a burned out headlight might make an activity a little more interesting. And I, for one, would like to see the option to make the initial terminal air test a requirement. Then you can expand on my equipment failure idea of having a certain random number of cars without brakes.

Well I am in CP loco's like everyday......We got, dim nose, medium nose, bright, nose and ditch
3 point controls
Length, which would realoly help, and so you could press the count down to see when your ass is clear of something without to change views
wipers should work from in cab, beable to flip a button to turn em on
maybe turn heated windows on?Lots of stuff
