Hi guys. Been on MSTS for 18 mths or so but just installed BVE today, so go easy please. The sim itself runs fine but I'm unable to run it in full screen mode. I get a "could not change display resolution" message. I've ticked the "disable visual themes" box as per the installation instructions as I'm running XP but still no go. Any ideas please? Specs are: P4 1.7ghz. 768ram. ATI Radeon 128mb 9800 graphics card. Windows XP. I just have the one route installed at present: Birmingham Cross-City South and the BVE version is 2.5.0.3.Regards, Nick (UK)

Have you tried searching the BVE forum for this? I know this has been a somewhat common problem in the past. If you have searched, and didn't find it... then I'm sure someone will come along with the answer soon. Tim Frost

We're not quite as bad about that 'down here.'I hope you took it as an informative suggestion rather than a "WHY DIDN'T YOU SEARCH BEFORE YOU POSTED???????????" reply. For all I know the thread could be back at Crotrainz... and I'm getting confused. Tim Frost

Hi Niknak and welcome,Have you tried setting the display res to 16-bit colour? I use 32-bit but sometimes Bve throws a hissy, anything in DxDiag that looks 'odd' should be checked/verified too, e.g. 3D acceleration should be Full On... your 9800 should run anything you can throw at it, so it's prolly a driver thing... I recall someone posting on the Trainz forum that there was a new version of the Catalyst driver pack for this card, try www.guru3d.com for the latest in gaming gfx stuff CiaoSaxon Locomotive Works - "The difficult we do immediately; the impossible takes a little longer"http://www.zodiac-infosystems.co.uk/rail/bve

Why not change your monitor resolution to 640x480 before starting BVE?

-----You are reading my signature now, don't waste your time reading it!-----
Or probably, maybe you should waste your time reading it.
Eh, where did my signature go?
Oh, here it is, the one you are reading right now? Can't you see it? I know I know, it's probably too bright to see it.
Hey, look at my avatar, nice right? I drew it with my own hands holding the mouse in Paint, with the pencil tool(and the Filling tool!)!
It's a picture of me in Planet Stooopid, where everything is the same as what you call "Earth" except that we are called "aliens" in your planet.
Anyway, I warned you not waste time reading my signature! You have just wasted probably about 30 seconds reading it, where you could have spent the time doing better things, like maybe reading the next post below if there is one...

Because then it makes all the stuff on your desktop, and any other programs that may be running, go all wonky. BVE will do this sometimes, but not always. It's a sure thing if you do it manually.Tim Frost

RE: Unable to display full screen mode

Tried dxdiag - No problems reported. I'm running version 9 btw. Even tried to change my display settings but the lowest setting I can go down to with the slider full left is 800x600, not 640x480. Could this be the problem? (Getting a headache now running BVE in windows!)Regards, Nick (UK)

"Even tried to change my display settings but the lowest setting I can go down to with the slider full left is 800x600, not 640x480. Could this be the problem? (Getting a headache now running BVE in windows!)"Yes, that could be it! Have you tried setting the colour depth to something lower, then check to see if you can set 640x480? Do you ever run any old DOS programs/games - many of those used 640x480. If your system won't go into 640x480, it looks like you will have to run BVE in windowed mode, or wait for the new version which should support higher resolutions and colour depths.BTW, when you play with desktop settings (as someone mentioned) your icons will often get all messed up when you switch back to your usual settings. I found a great little utility that can automatically restore your settings - you have to save a "normal" icon view first using the utility before you change settings, then you can use the utility to restore "normal" anytime you need to.The link is http://www.geocities.com/jtuckerj/ - look for the program "Save my Desktop" This program is now shareware, but it will run for 20 times before registration is required. Registration is only US $2.00.You would think Microsoft could have built this function into Windows.
OK, off the soapbox.

RE: Unable to display full screen mode

Tried the lower colour depth (16 bit) but no difference.Never run dos stuff so no clues there. No problems with icons yet but thanks for the utility mentioned. I've read on the forums that the latest version (2.9?) is available now in beta but is unstable - Is it worth me trying it do you think if it'll give me full-screen? One last point, I get a fair amount of backgroung hiss on the audio - Is this normal or do I have another glitch!!Tnks for all your help guys.Regards, Nick (UK)

> No

One last point, I get a fair amount of
>backgroung hiss on the audio - Is this normal or do I have
>another glitch!! I assume this is in windowed mode, although it should not make any difference which mode you are in. If you get the hiss on every route you try, then I would think you have a problem. Some sound files are recorded better than others so it might be the route your trying, or the train. Other than that, unless you have your volume at ear splitting levels, it is hard to say what it could be. If you provide details - route and train, sound card etc then maybe I can be of further help.Oh, try this: if you can find the train folder, play the sound files with media player and see if you still get the hiss. Same for any sound files (.wav) within the route's object folder. If your not sure how to find these folders, just post and I will clarify.

Then once you're in BVE, you'll still find it is in windowed mode. Now change the settings in BVE to change to run in full screen mode.

Thanks Nigel. Listened to the wav files, still hissy so must be the recording. Regarding the windowed mode, I guess I'll be waiting for version 3 to come out!!

RE: Unable to display full screen mode

dude, iv'e run into this and fixed it myself. what you need to do is right-click the icon for BVE that you might have placed. go and check the 640x480 blip. then, restart your computer. when it loads, run bve. load it , select Graphics Options or something like that, and select fullscreen. restart bve. it will be fullscreen, but with the little grey box on the right hand side still there.Newbie, but I have to give praise to the great route and train builders! thanks to all who build routes and trains! especially to you tram and subway builders!
