To improve framerates, try turning off anti-aliasing on your video card.If you have nVidia drivers installed, right click on the desktop, select "Properties and go to the settings tab. Select the "Advanced button, and there should be a tab for your video card. Next select "Performance and quality settings" (You may also have a system tray applet that is a more direct route). For other cards, consult the docs, as they say. When I killed anti-aliasing it had a dramatic effect on my framerates in 2.9. This is on a WinXP system, your mileage may vary!
