Help: Smooth Curves Problem – image 1

How do I get the curve below to be smooth. The distance traveled between the 25 m is 3.8 m to the left. I have tried using Switch with the distance set at 3.8 and 1.9 for the curve but neither work.In need of help desperatly!====================

Eh, where did my signature go?
Oh, here it is, the one you are reading right now? Can't you see it? I know I know, it's probably too bright to see it.
Hey, look at my avatar, nice right? I drew it with my own hands holding the mouse in Paint, with the pencil tool(and the Filling tool!)!
It's a picture of me in Planet Stooopid, where everything is the same as what you call "Earth" except that we are called "aliens" in your planet.
Anyway, I warned you not waste time reading my signature! You have just wasted probably about 30 seconds reading it, where you could have spent the time doing better things, like maybe reading the next post below if there is one...

That formula is useful in other circumstances but we are the far left hand track. I just need to find the curve width for moving 3.8m over 25m, I think?====================

>moving 3.8m over 25m, I think? So you are on the straight track? Then the above formula is exactly what you need! You know the distance between the two tracks, so use that formula and calculate the curve radius! Do it reverse! Look at the last post. Where I know the distance and calculating curve radius.

RE: Help: Smooth Curves Problem

Hi JamesIs this what you're after? The green line shows the curve you want to give an offset of 3.8m after 25 m. The formula is dx = L2/(2*r) where r is the radius of the curveso r = L2/(2*dx)Plugging in dx=3.8m and L=25 gives r = 625/(2*3.8) = 82.23m Trying L=50m gives r = 2500/(2*3.8) = ~330m Hope this is of use
Simon

RE: Help: Smooth Curves Problem

Sorry, forgot to add...Spreading the curve over 50m, you'll need the offset after 25m: for r=330m this isdx = 252/(2*330) = 0.95mCheers

Using the formula in the link I have gave you,>Distance = length * sin( length* 90 / (PI * radius ) in
>degree.3.8 = 25*sin{(25*90)/(PI*r)}
3.8 = 0.42261{2250/PI(r)}
3.8 = 950.8725/PI(r)
3.8PI(r) = 950.8725
11.938r= 950.8725
r = 79.65Try using 80m radius.

RE: Help: Smooth Curves Problem

>.... I might just leave it non-smooth, ...Noooooo!!! Anything but that.Ok. Have a look at the attached. Rail 2 is the one we're interested in (your labels may differ) and the distances are just for convenience. Lets assume that at 100m, Rail 2 is 8m to the right of Rail 0.Your route should look something like this:25m Rail 2: x = 8.00-3.80 =4.20; curve = -330
50m Rail 2: x = 8.00-0.95 =7.05; curve = -330
75m Rail 2: x = 8.00; curve = 0 (straight)
100m Rail 2: x = 8.00; cuvre = 0 Notice that the curve occupies two 25m blocks, but it ends at 75m and the block from 75m to 100m (adjacent to the points on Rail 3) is straight.(Alternatively, end the curve at 100m and make a curved turnout object for Rail 3 )> ...Orpington is starting to get annoying Can't wait for those three-way points at the south end

From the looks of what you want to do with one 25m curve piece,you can find the right curve radius but you also have to put the piece before the curve at the correct angle to the piece after the curve.Your trying to make a curve thats in one direction look good on both ends,but for it to look good as you've got it in the picture you curve right coming off the first piece and then left to get to second piece.Try moving the end before the curve more to the right and tweaking that and the curve until it looks good.

Progress just need to mirror it . See below, tried changing the radius to a minus but it went across my tracks and tried changing radius of curve object and got zig-zags! Hmm... please say that I am not back to square one.====================

RE: Help: Smooth Curves Problem

Hi JamesAs you say - nice curve; wrong direction! Try starting from the other end of the curve, by the points, and working back towards the diamond.If we call the x-offset through the platform X, then the offsets in the curve will be:At the points: X
25m back from the points: X - 0.95m
50m back from the points: X - 3.8mCheers
SimonPS - Don't worry at this stage if the result doesn't join up neatly with the diamond, you can work on that later.

Hi James,If this is all you need to be fixed, I will put the Northern Line aside for a few minutes and help you out. So then send it to me and I will do it for you. I know track laying is a pain, but with the TrackViewer it has become a tad easier.Bye for now,Stephen.

could you tell me:
how far apart your tracks are (normal spacing)(i'm guessing 6 foot?)
"-------" between platforms
how far to the right your points go
how far from the points to the start of the platforms.
i should be able to come up with something tomorrow

RE: Help: Smooth Curves Problem

Hi James,The whole route (at least to Orpington Sidings) is complete. You might need to drive the whole route a couple of times to make sure I haven't stuffed up the sounds or track placements.James your route looks great and I can't wait to see it finished. Check out what I have done and let me know if any changes need to be made or additional trackwork added.PS Where should I send the files too?Bye for now,Stephen.
