Just a couple of comments:
I ran uchibo and was impressed by being able to change the viewing angle,
but I tried running WJ-MK and results where very poor indeed, the cab was distorted, and many of the textures weren't appearing properly. (transparent ones)
Also:
I don't know how to get the main screen (with markers, etc) back on, and do I have to overwrite the string file to english?
is it worth emailing mackoy and telling him what happened? And tom, how did you get the fps meter up?

How can you eat your pudding if you don't eat your meat?

RE: beta 2.9 is available

it took me a LONG time to get it going. I'm not sure if it's because I was trying to play with this the same time as trying to figure out how to get a worm out of my system. For me that .net was very flaky, had to d/l and run it at least a dozen times, and each time i ran the install I had a different result(the progress kept going forward though each time). Never seen anything like it, but it is do-able.

If I don't see the program information in the top left or the power settings speed and frame rate in full screen, I can add this to the list of things my video card will not do. It does work in the windowed portion.

Are we supposed to install the Japanese version of .Net framework?

Eh, where did my signature go?
Oh, here it is, the one you are reading right now? Can't you see it? I know I know, it is probably too bright to see it.
Anyway, I told you not waste time reading my signature! You have just wasted 10 seconds!

Ok, rewind a bit...I have no idea what is going on?! Now I gather this is a beta BVE and what the hell is a .NET framework?! And this BVE seems to have huge differences, what going on here, this is too big a step in BVE for me to comprehend

Looks great, and my frame rates have generally tripled! The higher res, full screen and new needles are cool...A few questions to ponder1. How do you quit BVE.Net? The only way I can figure is the old control/alt/del, which 50% of the time sends the display to corruption, then you have to reset the computer - not good. Is there a key I haven't found?2. It crashes with a violation error after loading .rw routes. Is this that it doesn't support .rw routes, or that it does - but does not support b3d object files? (which most rw routes seem to use).Stoopid - I installed the English version of Net. After a restart of windows it worked fine.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=262d25e3-f589-4842-8157-034d1e7cf3a3&DisplayLang=enTo get the English strings, it seems best to open string.ini with notepad. Then open string_en.ini. Copy all the text in the English file to the string.ini file, and save.It doesn't like it if you simply rename the files.Cheers

I didn't have to reboot my PC after installing .net support. Also, you can quit BVE .net by pressing alt + F4 keys, just as when exiting many windows programs such as IE or WMP.Hope this helps. The program is a GIANT leap for BVE, and a leap in the right direction if you ask me. EDIT: I've been trying to make the border around the images in my sig to go away for a long time but I can't make it work with the forum software. I'd like to have them remain activated with the link but lose the border!! I know how to do this in regular HTML but the forum software ruins that concept. Any ideas? Thanks in advance...Tim Frost

RE: beta 2.9 is available

The .NET framework is a program library from microsoft. You can imagine it as a giant DLL. BVE uses functions in thie library, so you have to downloat and install the .NET framework. Microsoft says it is very cool, so get it and don't ask

One thing that may be of interest to some is that I originally tried running BVE.net with (what I assumed) was a NET framework I'd obviously installed before or had come pre-installed on my PC. (FYI I'm running WinXP Pro). At max resolution, I found BVE.net to be very jerky with very low framerates.
After downloading the .NET framework v1.1 from the MS Windows Update site, however, BVE.net ran superbly, with framerates running through going through the roof, so if people have had a decline in framerate or no noticeable increase, you may want to upgrade to NET 1.1.One other thing I noticed was that the quality (resolution) of the Panel actually decreased in some routes, while the route was running.
For example, I was running the 87 on HW-WG, and suddenly, while passing through the tunnel just outside Hammerwich, the quality of the panel decreased so I could no longer read the numbers on the speedometer.

I tried to use BVE 2.9 Beta but I don't know what's going on because it displayed Japanese words instead of Engish words. I tried BVE 2.5 and it worked fine on my computer. I tried BVE Route Builder 1.1 but I don't know what's going on because the online help was not helpful. I expected to left-click when laying track but the instructions on track laying are confusing. According to RouteBuilder, read the manual. If you have more questions, refer to the RouteBuilder forum at bve-tools.com.This topic here is about BVE 2.9.To make it speak english, rename string.ini to string_jp.ini and then string_en.ini to string.ini, then start BVE.

First things first - .NET Framework is available as a recommended update from M$ (try running Windows Update to access it), I downloaded last night purely so I could run BVE.NET. It is essential in order to make the BVE beta work.IMHO with my impressions of 2.9, we now have a true rival to M$TS, only with better track physics and sound! It is truly impressive in 1024*768 full screen, but sadly I didn't notice any improvements in FPS - probably due to my puny video card.Development-wise, the only differences I can see is textures can now be full 32-bit colour (which is going to save me downsampling a lot of the textures I'm making at present) and much more attention will have to be paid to cab bitmaps, since every little flaw in the cab can now be detected and make it look ugly when running at higher res's/more colours. If this is the future of BVE, then roll on... I expect to be optimising my development towards BVE 3 now I have an indication of what it may hold.

First I downloded two files: bve2.9003.1360.1358.zip and bve2.9003.1360.1358z.zip. I down't know if those are right files, but I didin't find any better on reccomended page. I unpacked them to a new folder and than I downloaded and istalled Microsoft.NET Framework.
Trying to run bvedotnet.exe, I obtain this error message:Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 19when I tried to click "Storno" (Cancel), I saw this message:Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 20when I click on "Opakovat" (Retry), I must cancel this program by Ctrl+Alt+Del, when I click "Storno" (Cancel), I'm back on Windows!
I tried both Uchibo routes, Mittelspitze or Hirakami updated with the same results. I tried various display mode settings (640*480 or 800*600, windowed or full screen, 16 and 32 bit). My computer is Compaq with win2000, 1.2 GB, 128 MB RAM.I think this is half-made beta version and how I see too many unsatisfied messages here I think we may return to "old good" BVE and wait for full version.

I got the same thing whilst trying to run Sandymill Electric on the 'night' routes... I'm inclined to believe that it's an error in processing the route that causes the exception error, but what exactly I am yet to determine.BTW I got Uchibo running fine first-time... but indeed if you aren't keen on working with development versions, or if any newbies are reading... 2.5 is the one for you at the moment.I certainly don't think the beta's half-done... I'd probably say this was 80-90% complete!

I'm running my home computer, which is very poorly right now, but basically, I did this:
1) Downloaded and installed the .NET framework
2) Installed BVE.NET
3) UNzipped the other folder.
I noticed the english string table inside, but when i put it in the BVE program folder, surprise, surprise, nothing happened. i now have 2 versions of BVE!
Also, I noticed that to get the time, etc, just press F3 as before.
I took the Old 323 and the Old version of XCS for a spin, and generally got improved framerates, however, i still have transparency problems. the needle movement was superb, and zooming in and out didn't result in major loss of framerate. I found to exit the program I right clicked to get the menu to come up. when i pressed F5, it refreshed the route (it crashed my computer, as it couldn't really cope)
I also got loads of errors when it tried to load the VT 86 freeobject.
Hmmm....

The BVE site says the timetable routines hasn't been written yet, So i'm guessing that will be back in the final release(along with Mr. Angryman?).The final version should really be something.

RE: beta 2.9 is available

Hello Mechanik,I've had the same problem as you, only a black screen but the sound was working. On a German BVE-Forum everybody had the same problem. Martin Fincken has the solution: You have to set your computer in the English standard. Mine was set on the Dutch standard, but after changing this, it worked. Maybe this is the solution for your problem. If you already have it in English, than I don't now how to solve it.In case you don't know how to change these settings: click on start, configuration, configurationscreen, Country-setup(or something like that,in dutch it says: Landeninstellingen, so I don't know in what languige yours is) There you choose English,Great Brittain. All this doesn't affect your personal folders and programsetups, I haven't found anything on my computer that had changed, only BVE 2.9 Beta works!!!! and that is what coundsHope this helps,Greetings,Jaap Stegers

RE: beta 2.9 is available

I noticed that when I run on max resolution, 1024x780 or something, with 32bit color, nothing comes out right. The route runs, but the panel doens't come in right or at all, and some of the objects are messy.I don't know if this is BVE itself or the routes I use, or even my computer, so I'm hoping someone else has this issue so I can figure it out. They run fine on 16bit at the same resolution, and the middle resolution option works fine with 32bit usually.

Congrats to Mr. Mackoy, its like Xmas and Birthday rolled into one!Got it to run superbly 50 FPS all the time (this is my lock on my card). AMD-Xp 2Ghz (Not 2000+), GeForce Ti200 64Mb, 1Gb of DDR Ram, Running XP Pro, SB Live!, My Amp and Meaty Speakers for great sounds and crisp graphics. An ultimate set-up! Panels are a bit blurry and a few niggles, but Mr. M you've done BVE very proud!====================

RE: beta 2.9 is available

Myself and a few others are currently busy playing with the panels now to resolve the pixelation. It appears to solve this we are either going to have to redraw panels in a 512x512 or possibly 1024x1024 resolutions (1024x1024 will mean super detail in 1024x768 mode), 512x512 mode is successful with detailed less pixelated panels working when redrawn and resized. Experiments continue with 1024x1024. If the panel is any other resolution it won't work properly. The only exception to this being with the former BVE panel sizes from the source bitmap. However this brings pixelated results An observation I've made is now that the grey area under the transparency areas on panels no longer exsists, so there is not limit on how high the guage/driver's desk should be. This should also benefit passegner views meaning you no longer need to keep on shifting it up to get rid of the grey areas showing through the windows.

This is one point, but it's obvious enough that train panels have to be redraw for better results...Another point are sharp curves and grades... this is a 60 mt radius curve on 30 per thousand grade Luigi Cartello

Hi, folks again, the mail problem was in language windows setting. When I changed my windows to english environment, BVE 2.9 runs O.K. I noticed those problems:1) BVE runs only with "normal" panel, not with full-cab
2) I can run BVE maximally with 1024*768 and 16 bit resolution, not with 32.
3) fps is only up to 20, not more (with maximal distance view). Somebody wrote here that he has about 50-60, how he did get it?

I seem to have a problem while loading routes with trains that have the extended panel. If it has anything going above the standard old style panel (I don't have any other way of describing it...), then everywhere that I would normally look out is blue, as is most of the panel itself. :-\

>look out is blue, as is most of the panel itself. :-\ I have the same problem.I am running a Xabre card. I do have some problems with transparent colors in BVE sometimes. This cab thing happens in all resoultions.I created a blank cab and it shows the full screen. I will use it to test the transparency theory later when I add some simple dials. The screen shot is from the Hammerwich line. I ran the Hammerwich line with BRR10 and picked the blank cab. I then closed BVE and opened the BRRTEMP file that BRR10 creates and ran this with BVE 2.9.
The screen view shows wrong track running and is taken with the view all the way out so you can see far away and the vertical and horizontal curves can be seen. ( you can also see an example of the transparency problem I sometimes have.
I wish I could upload the FRAPS captured videos I made of this run. Looks just like a video/movie shot by a Rail fan on a trip. Same bad framing and poor zoom control

I have noo school today (great!) so today could be the day where i stumble on a complicated working of making cabs that are 1024x768 sizes, not pixelated. Not sure about the control's yet, but there seems to be just the one Klaxon, pressing CTRL and ENTER or SHIFT and ENTER is the same as when i press BACKSPACE and ENTER, i hope we do have the three horns thing in the final realease! And one more thing: With the loss of the grey panel(- brillient!) you don't see the gradients. I dont really use them, but some routes wouldn't go a miss without it, but then saying that i would get used to it

I got the beta to run with BRR10. I ran BRR10, clicked on menu, clicked on configure and changed the bve file directory to C:\Program Files\mackoy\BVE .NET . I then went to the diectory C:\Program Files\mackoy\BVE .NET and made a copy of the BVENET exe file and called it BVE. BRR10 now runs the beta.

So the program exe is called BVENET.exe? All the versions of BRR assume the exe is called BVE.exe, which is probably why it doesn't work. I'll have to make it possible to define the exe name in v10.1.

I hate to point out the possibly blatently obvious but are you sure you have the reverser in forward?Secondly, the GP38 is a single locomotive on the point of a very heavy train, so wheelslip is a big possibility. Try to power up and move with about 10-15 seconds in each run level, if it still doesn't move, err... well... wait for the final version! The HST is a locomotive with a lot of power, are you sure it's not wheelslip here? Try the same as above. Hope this helps... if it doesn't... sorry! Tim Frost

Ive gotten the HST to move.Try this:
Wait until the signal to go from the guard has completly finished, then (and only then) realease all brakes and crank the power up to 2 or 3. Ive noticed that if you put the power notch on full, and brakes on notch 1, then try to move off (when the guard has beeped the beeper) then the train wont move.

starts with the GP-38, the needles (2) start at the bottom of
the gauges and rise slowly as the brakes are released. That's
the opposite of other trains where the pressure starts high
and the needle falls as the brakes are released. So my
guess it's in the brakes and it's limited to the GP-38. I was able to rename BVE.exe to bveexe.old and rename
Bvedotnet.exe to Bve.exe so BRR10 would run right. I'll dive into it tommorrow night. Christopher Tarana

RE: beta 2.9 is available

You got to remember that this is a beta and most likely some routes won't work. I'm having the same problem with a japenese route im developing and i think Tom is having the same problem with the Picc. Line. Don't worry about it. Wait untill the final version.
Take care,
Adam

Eh, where did my signature go?
Oh, here it is, the one you are reading right now? Can't you see it? I know I know, it is probably too bright to see it.
Anyway, I told you not waste time reading my signature! You have just wasted 10 seconds!

Steve Green is taking a look at it himself. I'm curious as to what he finds. I haven't found a door indicator in the new BVE yet, I wonder if that's the problem? (probably on Mackoy's cutting room
floor with the timetable code!) Christopher Tarana

RE: beta 2.9 is available

When you copied the file or renamed it and ran BVE, did it start to reinstall itself quickly? If so then it reverted back to it's original japanese configuration. You either need:
A) to copy the contents from the english to the japanese version. Which it sounds like you did already
B) Rename string.ini to something else and string_en.ini to string.ini. C) Or copy the text in the strings line by line.
That's the 3 solutions that seems to work for everyone so far.

You can do that if it works but there are reports of isolated problems with that method.Tim Frost

Well, all three are options, but some people seem unable to just copy and paste the whole thing, so they could do as you did, and copy it line by line. Just renaming the files worked for me. *shrug* At the moment, I think it is a matter of trying different things and sticking with what works. Tim Frost

Having just driven Sandymill Electric with the new 314, what an experience. It really felt like I was driving in a real cab. I'm off to go do a LU route with the speakers cranked up.====================

For those who cannot get 60fps, remember the old trick? Put Windos Media Player in the background... Otherwise it is only 32fps for me...
