Has anybody ever created the route for a defunct railroad, perhaps something that was shut down years ago and even had its infrastrutucre removed? If so, which ones can be recommended? I would be most interested in seeing a program of the old New York, Westchester & Boston, which closed down in 1937.CR

There is Picc Aldwych 2003 version... I'm going to put an update up which makes the rails rusty, improves the signals and a few bitmaps and remove the bright green light .--

hows about when i release the 1970s version of the ECML, i make a modern day version and you can take a deltic down the A19 for a few miles, then down a cylepath, no doubt mortifying the cyclists?
seriously though I was working on the Grimsby - Louth route, but it's suspended.

RE: Defunct Railroads?

My 1952 "Odhams" Road Atlas of Great Britain has all the lovely old lines still "in situ" - including for instance some of the old Kent Mine lines closed before Beeching! A good source (BVE Route creation wise) for line details is a ggood rummage around second hand bookshops that stock old Ordnance Survey Maps - they can usaually be picked up for a pound or so, I won't buy new now I've found this source - although it was a bit dodgy cycling along the route of the old Horsham to Guildford line using a 1948 map I can tell you!I notice that the Redditch to Birmingham line once began at a junction near Evesham - now that I'd like to see!! (as an extention to the existing route!!!)Whatever happened to Past and Present Railway Books?

Trying to get a copy of the Topical Maps of Melbourne on CD, they actually have not chaned the land much in parts and you cas still parts of the old railways like the Outer Circle, so this might be useful.Tom

RE: Defunct Railroads?

I am actually hoping to see a program of the New York, Westchester & Boston Railroad, which was very modern for its time but went out of service in 1937/1938. But something tells me that pigs are likely to fly first.CR

RE: Defunct Railroads?

I'm working on the Chicago North Shore & Milwaukee, which hasn't turned a wheel for over 40 years. This railroad was arguably one of the most photographed of interurbans, several books are available, one bit is still in service, and much of the right of way is more or less intact, with either disused trackage or a bike path.Although there has been some movement with the CNS&M in the Trainz community, I don't ever expect to see any of the material. I figure that this undertaking is not terribly difficult and opens up new doors in research, contacts, and knowledge. One of the real beauties of BVE is that you can work on something a little at a time. No heavy graphics editors, you learn as much as you feel like at once. You can learn something from every route you look at. You can build a route without ever getting into building 3-D structures, and even so, with BVE, it has been reduced to something simple. Some of the North Shore timetables have the route mileage printed on them - this is easily turned into the BVE distance count. With the timetable, I have the preliminary station spacing already done. I have a cheapo GPS device and have marked all of the major former crossings. I was able to ride up and down the bike path and "track" some of the points, though it may be easier just to get the major points by driving around. I haven't been terribly successful at tracking points from a moving train, mostly due to lousy GPS reception on my cheapo device.I was able to find decent cab pictures from books and scan them in. Coloring them so that they look OK is a bit of work. If I can't find it, I make it up. It's easy to change later. Not as easy in some of the other sims. What makes or breaks a route is attention to detail, particularily in some important places or junctions. The North Shore wouldn't be right without a reasonable rendering of the distinctive Skokie Valley catenary towers. But to get started, the ones which come with BVE work fine. There is the Root River bridge near Racine, plus other viaducts and bridges.Pigs fly? See the Miyazaki film, "Porco Rosso", available on DVD.

well. change the color of the top of the rail to the one of the sides of the rail. also, you might consider re-working the sleeper bitmaps to make them look unkempt.
as for weeds, I really wouldn't bother!

Epping-Ongar route!

-----You are reading my signature now, don't waste your time reading it!-----
Or probably, maybe you should waste your time reading it.
Eh, where did my signature go?
Oh, here it is, the one you are reading right now? Can't you see it? I know I know, it's probably too bright to see it.
Hey, look at my avatar, nice right? I drew it with my own hands holding the mouse in Paint, with the pencil tool(and the Filling tool!)!
It's a picture of me in Planet Stooopid, where everything is the same as what you call "Earth" except that we are called "aliens" in your planet.
Anyway, I warned you not waste time reading my signature! You have just wasted probably about 30 seconds reading it, where you could have spent the time doing better things, like maybe reading the next post below if there is one...

RE: Defunct Railroads?

HiThe Australian Richmond to Kurrajong and Camden routes are routes based on long closed Australian lines. They are also two of the best BVE routes ever created. The Camden route has one of the most challenging drives with extreme gradients, and the Kurrajong route has some spectacular weather scenery. In fact, I believe it pioneered the "rain storm" special effect.Cheers Paul
