RE: routebuilder

hand coding is not on the link in his signature, there is a good explanation of how to do it on the BVE helper site at: http://members.aol.com/bvehelper/If you think hand coding is going to be a lot easier then your wrong, well I found it quite hard any way. If you have lots of time then you will get to understand it and probably find it quite easy.-------------------

My comment on the matter is that I tried RB, but I found that it just didn't work quite as well as hand coding- You can see what is going on overall in RB, but you can't really make those little tweaks that make a route what is is in RB. Another thing to consider is the fact that the code that RB produces is far harder to understand than standard hand-coding, so for me, it's hand coding!Chris Leeswww.bvecornwall.tk -BVE Cornwall: Providing QUALITY Steam for BVE!

>make those little tweaks that make a route what is is in RB. Hmm, I really can't tell the difference between a handcoded
.csv file and one Routebuilder has done. Must be an acquired
skill. I do know that the .csv files that RB creates are
capable of being edited in any standard text editor. This means
there is the possibility of tweaking and other "post-processing". I
think it's great that you can hand-code routes. I tried and it
didn't work for me. What surprises me is the reaction that RB is getting from the BVE community in general. When SCASM was the only tool for making scenery
for Flight Simulator 5.0 and above, you either learned how to
hand code scenery or downloaded it from Flightsim.com. However,
when the authors of Airport 1.0 and Airport and Scenery Designer
came out with thier graphical scenery designers (early versions of which looked and operated exactly like Routebuilder.) there was no comparisons by people on wether hand-coded or ASD scenery was
better. In fact, the overall design community jumped in with both
feet, and offered the authors of both new editors help with improving thier projects, based on thier experiences with hand-coding SCASM scenery. Now there are thousands of different sceneries available that were created with Airport or ASD, thousands of new users and Airport and ASD have undergone several upgrades to keep up with the new FS software. Hand-coding and RB both create BVE compatible .csv files that BVE itself has no problem using, so why make the distinction? You can have good or bad routes using hand-coding or Routebuilder. It's all up to the author of the route. Christopher

Eh, where did my signature go?
Where has my favourite LUL train gone? Maybe it was sent for bolt checking again...

file. However the objects used are all in .b3d format. It
also exports a credits.txt file that lists all the object
copyrights. I'm not saying RB is perfect at coding routes,
but it's not cast in stone either. You can edit the .csv
file and tweak anything you want before you release it. It
really boils down to the skills of the route designer.Christopher Tarana

>gareth lewis Make sure you have all the tutorial routes for Routebuilder,
remember not to export your route to BVE until you have at least
3 stations, a route definition and a default train. You can save and
load a project without having these requirements. BVE supports only
3 connections per point, it's easy to go over that and get a "invalid floating point" error. You can't break Routebuilder, so the best
thing is to jump in and make some short, loopy routes and see how
RB reacts. RB 1.1 will have a lot of fixes and refinements. Hopefully
it won't be too much longer before Uwe and Thomas release it. Christopher Tarana

Hi,don`t forget that Rb 1.1 will include much more features than the first version and don`t forget that we have many bugs eliminated. And beetween Rb and hand-coding is one important difference: With Rb you can create complete networks of rails.Surlely, with Rb you often don`t get that you really want but it`s the only graphical editor for Bve, and Bve makes it also not easy to us to export routes correctly

Its entirely your preference, but he asked if there was another way, and the alternative beleive it or not is to write the code by yourself. You may not like it or you may not be capable of doing it, but it still is the original and in my opinion the easiest and most flexible way of coding.I have tried RB for myself and found that whilst it is an alternative for lazy people , beginners and those who have lost sleep over hand coding, it is fairly resricted and eliminates the speed at which some features can be incorporated. The reason routes take long to make is due to the constuction of objects and RB relies on object libraries for this puprose. Object palcement, that is writing the route itself takes minutes. Anyway its up to you, the choice is yours. But wahtever you do and I have sid this before, Enjoy BVE!
