B'ham Cross-City South v1.2 and new class 323s released – image 1

LAST EDITED ON Jun-20-03 AT 08:51 PM (EDT)

Last year I started working on Birmingham Cross-City South v1.2, and I've just released it along with the new class 323 cab and passenger views by myself and Steve Green. For the X-City downloads visit the News page on my site: http://www.railsimroutes.co.uk The new class 323(s) can be found via the News page at http://www.bvetrains.co.uk Don't try one without the other. All routes feature lots of new sound effects, new track, some photographic textures and photo-realistic skies, extra details, stations updated to their present day state, new seasonal variations, rainfall effects, and Simon Gathercole's excellent Autumn and Winter tree textures. The new high Detail XP routes include detailed catenary with return conductors, plenty of new buildings, permanent way improvements, and scratch built detailed pointwork. The new class 323 download includes a night time version called upon by the appropriate route files.Due to the complex nature of XCS v1.2 there are some issues that users need to be aware of before using it, and I'm expecting some people may have problems with it, so I'll explain these issues here in case the Readme gets skipped over!Firstly, all detail levels are compatible with BVE v2.3, except the new High Detail XP routes which require BVE v2.5.The new "High Detail XP" detail level takes advantage of BVE's ability to handle considerably more object and route detail under Windows XP or 2000 without pausing or stuttering than it can with Windows 95/98/Me. So if you're lucky enough to have WinXP/2000 installed, hopefully you'll be able to enjoy these detailed and technically complex routes. The HDXP routes have even run successfully on Win XP/2000 PC's as slow as 400MHz!If you still have Windows 95, 98 or Me, then I'm afraid the HDXP routes will pause and stutter even on a 2GHz PC, so you'll have to stick with the "High Detail 9x" routes instead (equivalent to my old High Detail routes). There's nothing I can do about this, that's just the way BVE works with different operating systems! If you have a slow PC then I've still included lower detail routes. To experience the route properly and get the best first impression, drive the route "by the book", stick to the speed restrictions, and turn your speaker volume up really high - especially on the approach to Barnt Green and the approach to Birmingham New Street. Anyone whose travelled on the real cross-City line recently will recognise those noises instantly. Cheers,
Anthony.

*mouth open... tries to speak but words fail...*Wow...It's shocking... I don't think it would be any more real unless you could smell it.One comment/problem: the first sound file corrupts near the end of the install. I ignored it but I wouldn't know if I was missing something. Also, what are the... pipe thingies... with the odd looking white shape coming off them near Barnt Green? At any rate... I have to say, with no offense intended to all other route developers at all, that this is positively, without a doubt, the best set of routes available!Nice job on all the 323s, too... so many to drive so little time! Anyway, while waiting pc upgrade ,perhaps the old version is a alternative,
I think it's a top route with high or standard detail also.

Hell's Bells!!!This has to be the most incredibly integrated and realistic Bve experience I've ever had... never having ridden the X-City line IRL I can almost say now that I have done... the skies are beautiful, the scenery is totally real, the sounds especially are a treat and the 323 just has to be one of the most endearing and technically accurate EMU trains to date... watch out you lot, anyone thinking of making a route, take a lesson from the master... Anthony, my hat is way off... going skywards in fact For reference, here are some specs :-My PC - Dell Optiplex GX1: Intel PIII 450 MHz + 512Kb L2 cache, 576 Mb SDRAM, 40Gb ATA-133 7200 rpm HDD, GeForce2 MX400 w/64Mb SGRAM, SB Live 5.1, Windows XP Pro.Using Bve 2.3.1 and the High Detail Win9x Dawn route file the frame rate was 15 fps until BNS, where it dropped to 5... but there we go, not bad for a 5-year old 450 meg box I will try the XP route with Bve 2.5.3 tonight and add to this post afterwards.CiaoSaxon Locomotive Works - "The difficult we do immediately; the impossible takes a little longer"http://www.zodiac-infosystems.co.uk/rail/bve

Just a quick note...The number of free objects in these routes is STAGGERING! Keep in mind these figures include the 350(ish) statements in the route in which the freeobjects are called from their folders.5855 : summer cloudy
5847 : summer day
5846 : autumn rain/cloudy
5844 : winter day
5834 : dusk and sunset
5820 : dawn
5817 : nightAmazing... thank goodness for BVE 2.5... definitely worth the lack of PO now... I might add a full install is no less than 53.22mb... every byte is worth it...! Very well done Anthony... very very well done... Tim Frost

Anyway, in BVE 2.5, what happens if you put Route.Change as 1?
In BVE 2.3, it started in PO position(instead of EB), and you had to reset the safety devices. What about 2.5? Do you get to reset safety system?

I couldn't tell you earlier(e.g. right after I posted the above post), as I got a corrupted Class 323 download as well, but re-downloaded it and it worked fine. So I thought it was my own problem. So i download the Sounds file again and it keeps on reading from the Temporary Internet Files! Deleted the files there but still reading from it! I could downloaad 2.49MB in 1 second!

Just one minor thing.
The 'Sounds1' file seems to be corrupt, I get an 'unexpected end of archive' message when I try to extract it.
I've tried redownloading a couple of times to no avail.
Has anyone else had this problem or is it just me?

Fantastic!!! I rode from University to BNS last year - this new bve route captures every fine detail of it. And the detail of BNS is no less than phenomenal (a higher end graphics card is essential I, too, experienced the corrupt Sounds1 file, but I ignored it and evrything seems ok.Chris

WOW!I really didnt expect to come on here today and read that X-City South update has been released.
I havent run the route yet, I am still downloading but I'm sure I wont be let down.I dont think the majority of us actually realise how much work BVE developers like Anthony put into routes like this. Whilst finding the downloads on the site, it occured to me how much extra work is needed in updating the webpage as well; all the writing, images, web design = truely amazing!Congratulations Anthony, we cant thank you enough!Stefan

Simply magnificent! This route sets a very high standard. What a lot of spectacular detail - the doors open and I hear the birds chirping. Well, I could go on and on... Good excuse for people to upgrade to WinXP!Thanks Anthony, for all your work, and all the others who contributed. On the sound issue, WinRAR shows that the BGflangeXP.wav is the corrupt file in the archive - just so everyone knows. It does not extract, but that has no ill effect on this absolutly breathtaking piece of work.

Sensational Anthony. It looks, sounds, and feels just like the real article. I always thought the X City could be driven by listening to the sound of the rails without even looking out of the windscreen, and now I can test that theory with those great sounds you've added!Well done on the real life X City photos on your site too. Wow, thanks for the great feedback and kind words!I'm afraid there was a fault with the Sounds1 download, the file on my HDD is fine but something must have gone wrong when I was uploading it. Anyway, I've reuploaded it and tested the download, and it works fine. There's also a patch that adds the missing sound: http://www.railsimroutes.co.uk/x-city_south/downloads/x-city_south_sound_patch.exeThe only thing missing from the route as a result was the loud and sustained flange squealing and curve rumbling on the approach to Barnt Green station (one of things I recommended people listen out for, lol), so if you like those sorts of railway sounds the fixed download is a must have. Tim, the "pipe thingies" are experimental sprinklers that put a fine spray of water onto the outside rail, and this is supposed to reduce the flange squeal at this location. If the sound file wasn't corrupt this might be more obvious!! The local residents complained about the racket the trains produced (and it is really quite deafening in real life), but noticed that the problem was eased when it rained, so these sprinklers were put in at the cost of half a million pounds I gather. Does the system work? I've no idea, I've never seen it switched on in reality!Cheers,
Anthony.

It's absolutely fab, its almost like a DEV (except there aint no cheesy comentry from a well known has-been ) I simply can not even begin to wonder how great WJMK v2 is going to be.Keep up the great work, and I am upgrading this week.

Superb work Anthony, well worth waiting for. The XP version runs great, I'm lucky to have a PIV and Geforce 3. Only place the framerate drops is at New St. As always will look forward to your future work. Would be nice to see some non-fictional retro routes of this standard.

RE: B'ham Cross-City South v1.2 and new class 323s rele

I am amazed, I didn't think the original could be improved, but Anthony has worked miracles. I see he has even replaced the old track from Longbridge to Kings Norton, with continuous welded rail just as railtrack did last autumn.
I wonder if central Trains would be interested in using it for driver training!!!
The high detail 9x works fine with windows ME, frame rate of 8 entering New Street. Can't wait for the run to Lichfield, and to all the impatient ones out there, see it is worth the wait.

Is it me, or the new 323's sounds are softer than the previous one?

RE: B'ham Cross-City South v1.2 and new class 323s rele

Nope - a white cross on a blue background is an AWS cancelling indicator. It tells you that the AWS warning you've just heard doesn't apply to trains travelling towards Birmingham, but is intended for trains travelling in the other direction (presumably to warn drivers that they're about to run out of railway).

Thanks again to everyone for the compliments! It's also nice to see that details on the real line are being noticed in the routes. I do appreciate the feedback.jvizoso, the BVE Trains site is OK at my end, I'm assuming it's working for you now? The site uses up approx. 15-20 gigabytes of bandwidth every month, but access shouldn't be cut for that reason.Just to confirm, stooopid is right, the white board markers with numbers are gradient sign markers.Simon is also right about the white cross on blue background. Just after passing beneath the first overbridge after leaving Redditch, you should see a tall board with two posts supporting it on the right, that's the back of a fixed distant board and the AWS is connected with this, and it warns drivers approaching Redditch that it's nearly the end of the line. Check out Alan Lee's great new road learning guide for the Cross-City South over at www.jubileeline.org.uk for more details. Joshim you're quite right about the announcement errors, erm, oops! Check my download page again though (http://www.railsimroutes.co.uk/x-city_south/downloads.html) and force refresh it with CTRL+F5 in case you're getting an older cached version of the page - that bug was fixed yesterday, I didn't have time to write up a news item for the site! If anyone does find a small problem do check my download page just in case I've fixed it already.Lastly, those bird sounds that a couple of people noticed. That was actually an idea that Steve Green included in Southern v2 so I can't claim any credit for the idea, but those are authentic suburban Birmingham bird samples I've used instead. Cheers,
Anthony.

Talk about realism!"Everything is realistic on this route, photos for textures were taken on the real line and even the birds singing are recorded from the prototype"--

Hmm that's unfortunate, maybe you could contact your ISP and ask them to investigate how up to date their DNS server records are, or it's also possible there might be routing issues between your ISP's network and the BVE Trains server, meaning you can't access it.If you like, you can drop me an e-mail via the contact page on RSR-UK, and I can help with any details you might need, and/or send you the new 323's if necessary. Cheers,
Anthony.
