(Sorry if this rambles on but ideas triggered other
thogughts and ideas which triggered...)
I was reading on the General Forum that ocassionaly
US Railroads move groups of locos around to other locations
in groups with only a few of the locos actaully in power.Would such a 'Power Pool' move actvity be an idea for am
activitiy on Desert Frieght? The other idea was for Desert Freight to be re-worked to
when it was a 'pioneer' line during America's period of
late 19th Century expansion.. It need'nt be Standard Guage
at this time period there was some extensive 3ft (?) around..Don't forget the brave native americans though and of
course the Cavalry...Of course the Old West gives an oppurtunity to the
canadian route builders as well. Whilst there are
few that would venture out into a snowy trek North,
the railroad has vital supplies to deliver and a brave
engineer is needed to take the train..The Snowbound town scenario could also to some extent
be applied in a more modern setting in terms of driving
a hevay duty snow blower...
The snow blower on a smaller scale is something that might be
an idea for the Scottish Routes produced by Robert Glass and
Don Calrke and others. A senic point is that ocassinly in
snowy weather OHLE is known to 'spark' by itself apparently.Of course if anyone is willing to do Southern Region Winter 1991
when there was a very heavy snowfall in the South East feel free.
It might be intresting to see the result.Another weather related scenario that could be considered
is 'floods'. Both the Treston Park and Invermay lines
have a section that runs fairly close to a river that is
in theory capable of flooding. Of course the 3rd rail on Treston Park complicates matters A possible 'Thunderbird' Scenario to rescue a standard EMU is
a possiblity for the Treston Park collection of routes. From what I hear Anthony Bowden's working on different seasons
for X-City so why should'nt other routes have climatological
or seasonal variations?Of course Sandymill-Invermay in the depths
of thw wosrt of the winter snow would be a real challange for
drivers given the dark, snowy conditions and the very real
possiblity of unexpected events further up the line.
Combine this with pre 60's semaphore, discontinuous AWS
(if existent) and reduced visibility, you are looking at a REAL challange.
'Aye Driver, You'll be neddin something stronger than a fire when
ye reach journeys end,'</SCOTS>
My second idea comes from the intrest Wulf showed when I mentioned
something about Welsh routes and a Welsh translation for the
string.ini file.Converting Loop from Welsht to scottish is one idea. The other idea was somewhat more involved and may take the
form of a collection of routes rtaher than a single one.The idea is to link up several of the 2ft(ish) gauge railways
in North Wales to form a knd of regional Narrow Guage(like parts
of Switzerland) in an area where road usage has an impact. The route twists like anything round Snowdonia but a possible name
comes from the exiting lines incoporated. the name being
the 'Welsh Highland, Bala and Festiniog Joint Railway'For the most part the line is comprised of eisting trackbed
or 2ft Guage projections over old 'Beechinged' standard gauge
linesThe Routing is as follows....The intial contact with the Natinoal Rail network occurs
either in Bleanu Festiniog or Bangor (both on ex LNWR lines)
Bangor is at The Northen end of the line.
From Bangor it is an easy journey along the coast to
Caernafon with the main line continues towards Dinas
and a brnach heads upto the foot of Snowdon in Llanberis(Note The LLanberis Brnahc does not link up with Snowdn Mountain Railway due to a break of guage)The Mainline ut of Carenarfon heads as stated heads for Dinas
before heading Inland climibing into Snowdonia.
Wawnfuar, Salem, Beddgelert, and Croser are served
before the lines reaches Porthmadoc. A short section
of new alignemt was built here to enable through running
to the FFestiniog railway. From Porthmadoc the line is that of the Festinog via Minford
climbing again into the heart of Snowdonia and industrial
landscape of Bleanau Festiniog. From Blaneu the route heads south alongside the Standard Guage line
to the now disused yet still sinsiter Tranfwynd Nuclear plant.
The Standard Guage line carrries little traffic as that plant is
under decomissionig. From Transfywnnd the line follows the old Cmabrian(?) trackbed
into Bala again in the heart of the stunning Scenery of North
Wales.Bala is of course not the end of te Journey as a short walk
takes you to another station and the start of another journey
towards the coast .. But then that line the Bala and Barmouth
is an idea for another time...BTW I'm sure that someoneon here can come up with a more
poetic way of describing the WHF&BRAlex
