Here's one for Alex! Other than the obvious fact that we can't
control switch points from BVE, is there any other way to simulate
switching and yard work with BVE? There are some excellent shunter
engines (switchers) available but no real way to use them properly. What changes might Mackoy have to add to BVE to make shunting a
possibility? How would this impact BVE's footprint(size of installed files?) Christopher

RE: Shunting activities in BVE?

I don't think so.
The main problem is not the switches but BVE won't let you go in reverse very far. Something you will need in move anything around a yard.Since BVE models the JR passenger railway system That was not any thought to simulate things other than passenger service.
At least thats my take sorry.Jason

Hmm, I've seen the warnings about reversing the train, but that's
usually sliding back off a station. That's a good point then if
it's true. I do know of cases where I couldn't get up a hill and had
to back all the way down to the previous station, so maybe there's
a limit to where on the route you can safely reverse.

No, that's a valid point too. Obviously when he started BVE Mackoy worked within the frame of reference that he had. BVE is excellent
at simulating point to point service. Christopher

RE: Shunting activities in BVE?

You can reverse up until the last station you stopped at. I did this on Bham X city, Redditch to Bham New St. non-stop, then reversed all the way! Make sure you don not let the doors open, once that happens, you can only reverse up to the end (well beggining if forwards) of that station!

I found out. As soon as you pass a station you can't back down
past it no matter how fast you are going. As long as you stay between stations you can go forward or reverse without any
limits. Christopher

Tom,The trigger, AFAIK, is the little yellow position bar, if that moves, Bve unloads all the stuff more than x metres behind. Assuming you stop before this, then you can reverse back as far as the last station, it makes no odds whether you are required to stop at it, the bar will move just the same.CiaoSaxon Locomotive Works - "The difficult we do immediately; the impossible takes a little longer"http://www.zodiac-infosystems.co.uk/rail/bve

>behind. No, no. BVE always unload 25m behind. That's why you can get the special signals effect in the DLR and U-Bahn. Once you reverse the train to a multiple of 25, it reloads 25m behind again. But the forward unloads as well when you travel backwards.

One morning, I woke up(Duh!) Then I ate breakfast. I ate green eggs and ham. It looked tasty! But after a while, my stomach didn't feel quite well. So I ran to the toilet! And guess what? I let out a giant FART! Did anyone feel a giant earthquake?
Oops? Where has my favourite LUL train gone? Maybe it was sent for bolt checking again...

RE: Shunting activities in BVE?

>So can you reverse up to the last station you stopped at, or
>only the last one you passed? Never quite found this out. Last one I passed. I have 3 stations on the test route, A, B and
C. On the first run I ran A to C non-stop and stopped at C to
find out if BVE would let me back down the route. It wouldn't let
me move at all. The next time I ran from A to 7/8's of the way to
C non-stop, stopping outside the station. Then I was able to back up
as fast as I wanted, but the train stopped itself at station B. (With
the full throttle sounds still playing too!) I imagine adding button
to BVE to move a set of points left or right would be fairly
easy. The hard part would seem to be getting BVE to recognize more
than one primary route. Christopher

have you tried running trackviewer backwards? The raster is only displayed 25m in the rear from wherever you are.

>have you tried running trackviewer backwards? The raster is
>only displayed 25m in the rear from wherever you are. I only have trackviewer installed so far as Uwe said it was
required to have it for Routebuilder. I use BVE itself for all my
route testing. It's quicker that way because I see how BVE will
react immediately. I think it worked excellent considering its
limitations.

RE: Shunting activities in BVE?

Look its simple, as long as YOU DONT LET THE DOORS OPEN you can reverse! That means you can go from A to C and then as soon as you get to C stop postion, make sure you don not let the train stay in the stop postion , go past it and then reverse, then you can go all the way back to A.What Phil (well stooopid) said is right, it unloads every 25m behind you, but when travelling backwards it reloads every 25m behind you!

RE: Shunting activities in BVE?

>>did you cross any switches?

>No. It stopped about 25m before a signal though. Ahh So! The current version of Routebuilder doesn't support
signals or block operations. Maybe that's part of it too? So,
maybe I can design two test yards? One that overlaps a signal and
one that is completely within a block. (RB doesn't support signals,
but you can edit them into the .RBD file and it will export them
correctly.) Christopher
