BVE Developer Guidelines – image 1

Some months ago, I create a little quake in community writing I don't agree the BVE Developer Guidelines. The forum exploded, and that topic must be closed with more than 300 replies in few days.I am happy to see that new release is more mature, and showing a true internet spirit. So, now, I can agree this new BVE Developer Guidelines, and I am happy to do so.All the best.

In that case I am happy to welcome you and your technical expertise, Loop is a fine piece of work and deserves to be used often. In fact the rails and crossings show extraordinary attention to detail, one of my first impressions as the train passed over the switches was how smoothly it progressed, just like the real thing, so well done indeed!Pete, you need to describe your problems a bit more scientifically and not so emotively.... a topic title like 'Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz' is gonna make some people NOT read it CiaoSaxon Locomotive Works - "The difficult we do immediately; the impossible takes a little longer"http://www.zodiac-infosystems.co.uk/rail/bve

Though I must comment several of my sounds are used with permission but no credit which is one of requests. I'm beyond caring what happens in BVE now. Sounds do cost money to obtain.Don't mean to cause an argument.

I know this person well enought to know his personel and professional standings would not let this happen if he knew. Why not send an e-mail to him and he will correct the file and repost it the new file to give you proper credit or if you object he will pull the route and redo it.Jason

BVE Developer Guidelines – image 4

LAST EDITED ON May-15-03 AT 04:03 PM (EDT)

I'm happy to accept that the old guidelines were one sided and the tone was wrong. They no longer say that the freeware/copyright/permission model is the only right way to go about things - they now say that open source is great as well, but that care should be taken when mixing the two together, and that whatever decision a developer takes on this issue, it's courteous to respect that decision - this will hopefully encourage people on all sides to believe it's worthwhile carrying on developing. That's the core difference between the new and old guidelines, and it treats both open source and copyrighted material as valuable contributions to the BVE community. One query though, are you now willing to accept that if a developer has stated they want permission to be saught before their own work is re-used that they can and should be able to do this, if that is what they feel justifies the amount of time an effort they've put in? If you genuinely agree with the new guidelines you have to accept them in their entirety. I don't think anyone, on either side of the argument, can just pick out the bits they like and disregard the rest. This isn't meant to start a massive debate (I've done enough discussions over this already!), I just want to make sure the message given out by the new guidelines is fully understood before anyone decides to back them.Anthony.

Hi Ferrovipathe,I was one of those who went bonkers on the aforementioned Crotrainz thread . However, it now sounds like the intentions of your post weren't totally clear to me at the time. I'm sorry if that was the case.Initially it sounded like you were attacking authors who want to retain the rights to their work. I think quite a few other people felt the same thing, and that's why there was such an outburst.I felt angered at the thought of others telling me what I could and couldn't request, with regard to my own material. I also hate the thought that I should automatically be true to the 'internet spirit'. It also sounded like you were attacking the guidelines themselves for simply existing, something which I thought was silly considering you're not forced to abide by them at all, and the very reason they exist is to help you.I think the new guidelines are fair. If you agree with these, then I must have either totally misunderstood your post, or you have changed your mind about a lot of things! Either way, I apologise for going mad over it.Loop is excellent DavidBVE in Glasgow:

BVE Developer Guidelines – image 7

Sorry if I didn't be clear on that time, when I said ' I don't agree with BVE guidelines...'. I NEVER change my mind. Sorry about my English, but it is not my mother's language, and if I can read it without problem, it's quite a little difficult to me to write it like French.
Anyway, some explain:
If something is able to make me angry, it's people who is giving lesson to others, writing they are the best, suspicious against everybody else and who want others get permission for everything. People are dead 60 years ago to fight against that, and we cut a lot of heads 2 centuries ago in France for that too.
Liberté, égalité, fraternité is France's slogan, and I trust in it.
There is no racial difference between us, everybody is identical inside, I am paid for that. There are only 2 grammes of melanin more in Nordic's skin than Congo people's.
So, I think that people may make mistake, and complaining all time for nothing is ridiculous. But be suspicious without evidence may hurt, and we must be very carefully, because it is a community, isn't it?About BVE guidelines, I always said that intellectual creation belong to author, but I also said that it is impossible to put copyright on everything, and so people who want others get permission for using a bitmap are out the road.
Why? Simple:
- If they are able to produce the proof they created it from scratch, they may do so. But do they ? If not, they must keep quiet.
- If they don't want others may reuse a part of their work, they MUST say it clearly, but they are showing how generous they are.
- If they want others get permission, they say it AND give permission on request. If they do not, it's a non-sense, and a shame.
- In all other cases, as a lot of people who think that BVE is only a game, a freeware written by someone who loves train and people, all I want is to enjoy with it, and to share my pleasure with community. So, as one of the most difficult thing in BVE is building objects, not only because it's wasting time, but also because some don't know how build them, or live in an other country and have no photo of that object, I always say that the most important thing to do for make BVE community growing is to give everything to everybody ( in freeware spirit or open source, as author whish). Now, rules are clear for everybody, and nobody is trying do give lesson to others. Everything is ethic. So, I may agree, that's all.All the best.

I think that the BVE Developer Guidelines are the only thing keeping a lot of quality Western Developers from chucking BVE in all together. I believe that having the choice to protect and copyright your own work is a basic right. On the other hand, I also agree that if you would like to publicise your objects and make them open source, that is also your right as long as you understand the implications. I thoroughly agree with and intend to uphold the points outlined within the new guidelines.Excellent work, Anthony.I have added the BVE Developer Guidelines banner to my website.Peace,
