Here is from MSNBC. I'm sure you guys over there have more details. I work for AMTRAK so these things are a concern to me as well.Updated: 7:52 p.m. ET Nov. 6, 2004UFTON NERVET, England - A British high-speed passenger train ploughed into a car at a level crossing and flew off the rails on Saturday, killing six people and injuring scores.
“The 1735 train for Plymouth with 300 passengers on board collided with a vehicle at the crossing, completely derailing the train,” said Andy Trotter, deputy chief constable of British Transport Police.Among the scores of injured, 11 were seriously hurt. There was no indication that infrastructure failure or railway staff were responsible for the crash, in a country where rail safety has been a political issue since a series of deadly crashes followed the industry’s privatization in the 1990s.Crashes blamed on shoddy maintenance and poor driver training over the past five years have killed 42 people, shaking up the industry and causing political damage for the government.“There was a big jolt, the train sped up and then turned on its side,” passenger Harriet Myles, 19, told Reuters.“I could hear people screaming and glass breaking. We stayed put for a while. It was so dark we could not move,” she said.Dozens of fire engines and ambulances were rushed to the crash site at Ufton Nervet in rural Berkshire, about 40 miles (65 km) west of London.A Reuters photographer saw a twisted carriage on its side surrounded by searchlights of emergency vehicles. Some victims were trapped for hours. Shortly before midnight police said that they believed no one was left in the wreckage, but they would continue to search through the night.“Conditions down there are very difficult. We’re working in the pitch dark with only spotlights,” an ambulance service spokesman said.Chaotic scene
Jonny Saunders, a BBC correspondent on the train when it crashed, told BBC News 24 television:“We came to a juddering halt. And then suddenly all the lights went off. Screaming and shouting. We were in pitch black and total chaos on the carriage for a few moments.“I was incredibly lucky because the carriage that I was in didn’t actually go over on its side but the carriage in front of me did go over on its side and the carriage behind me went over on its side,” he said. The train from London’s Paddington station to Plymouth in western England crashed shortly after 6 p.m. (1800 GMT). It was operated by First Great Western, a subsidiary of rail and bus operator FirstGroup Plc.Critics say Britain’s privatized railways have lagged far behind other European countries in investment and safety. Two trains crashed at Paddington in 1999 killing 31 people. A government inquiry blamed the crash on faults with the training of drivers at operator Thames Trains.Crashes north of London at Hatfield and Potters Bar in 2000 and 2002 killed 11 people and injured scores. Both were blamed on poor maintenance and led to far-reaching shakeups of the railway system. In February 2001 a Land Rover careered off the road and became lodged on a track at Selby in Yorkshire, northern England. A passenger train hit the automobile, flew off the rails and then hit a coal train.Ten people were killed in that accident and the driver of the Land Rover was jailed for five years.

I think I speak for all of us in offering my condolences to all those involved in this accident, which seems now to be a tragic suicide by the driver of the motor vehicle. I hope that that there is no further loss of life and there are no scapegoats made of any railway staff or emergency service staff who appear to have shown their normal high professionalism.

RE: Bad high speed train accident in England

unfortunately, as with many things on the railway, people think it *must* be the fault of the trains or the train company!!Hopefully people will stop and look, and then they will see that, instead of being blamed, First staff and the emergency services deserve thanks and praise for their calm, quick thinking. My thoughts are with those families of the dead and injured at this time

I know what you mean when you say people are quick to blame the train company. In this incedent the train company was not at fault in anyway and in this case the driver or the train really had absolutely no chance of stopping as the line down to the west is at speeds in excess of 80mph upto 100mph in places, and also because it was dark the driver probably didnt even know the car was there until it was too late once again condolences to the familes of those injured Slick

RE: Bad high speed train accident in England

Stopping your car on a railway crossing, before the gates come down, and just sitting there until a train comes and hits you isnt quite what id call Irresponsible.

Shouldnt have done it at all.Any way of committing suicide causes distress for someone else. Usually more than one person. It's actually pretty selfish.Even jumping infront of a train is totally out of order. I have a friend who couldn't drive a train again after someone jumped infront of a train he was driving. It messed him up big time.

RE: Bad high speed train accident in England

I know this is a very late post, but when I was in bed on the night of the incident people were constantly talking about how te railways were in a teriible state and they should get rid of the Automatic Half-Barriers used at Ufton-Nervett.I think motorists shouldn't need barriers at all and just the bare essential yellow and red lights. If motorist see the lights flashing, then they should know that a train is coming at be sensible and mature enough to stay behind the lights. One guy even said that 'cars slow down in villiages in town to 20-30mph why don't TRAINS!'WHAT????!!!!!!!!!

RE: Bad high speed train accident in England

Sometimes I really hate the people in this country. Its nothing to do with First nor Network Rail. It's to do with an asshole who parked his car on a railway line. The problem with the majority of our population is that they know nothing, extreme lack of intelligence. What they should do, if they dont like motorists driving over the rails, is just divert the cars, miles... and miles... and miles... and miles.. and miles and have the odd bridge here and there.Maybe then theyll stop causing accidents, and shut the hell up moaning.

>Billion Why would it cost so much?

-----You are reading my signature now, don't waste your time reading it!-----
Or probably, maybe you should waste your time reading it.
Eh, where did my signature go?
Oh, here it is, the one you are reading right now? Can't you see it? I know I know, it's probably too bright to see it.
Hey, look at my avatar, nice right? I drew it with my own hands holding the mouse in Paint, with the pencil tool(and the Filling tool!)!
It's a picture of me in Planet Stooopid, where everything is the same as what you call "Earth" except that we are called "aliens" in your planet.
Anyway, I warned you not to waste time reading my signature! You have just wasted probably about 30 seconds reading it, where you could have spent the time doing better things, like maybe reading the next post below if there is one...

RE: Bad high speed train accident in England

Money needed to renationalise the railways = about £10 Billion Why would it cost so much? Mainly to pay off the existing franchise holders, and to buy out the rolling stock leasing companies. Although a lot of money could be saved by simply waiting until a franchise runs out, (like for instance GNER's for the East Coast Main Line), and simply letting it go back into state ownership.John

Level crossings are fine - perhaps as there are very few around London they aren't thought of as a priority to close </cynic>?There are some crossings I know that would be stupid to close, they are perfectly safe and the alternative is a long trek up a hill, down a hill and accross a bridge.--

Although the reasons we were given about going to war were lies... in a few decades when the oil starts running out, youll realise why we done what we done, when the HSTs are still running up and down , while over in France theyre trying to perfect potatoe power.
