John Wormer (Wormer_UK) has "translated" a lot of Japanese routes into English - do a search on this forum and you should find numerous posts where John has translated and attached the route files, with links to get the object files, sound files and applicable train files. We all owe John a lot of gratitude for his efforts! That said, you really do not have translate most of the route files; they will run fine since the relevent commands are all English. Station names and signal numbers/designations will appear as garbage characters since they are usually in Japanese. If you can live without tranlations of these items and don't mind seeing garbage characters on the screen then your set. A few Japanese route developers do provide English versions of their routes, but the emphasis here is _few_.Since I like to see real station names, I have "translated" a few routes before John started posting. I used Altavista's Babblefish and http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/cgi-bin/cgiwrap/jwb/wwwjdic?9T which is a character by character translator (good for place names). I also found some Japanese railway maps with English station names on the net and have used those for non-fictional routes. The procedure I followed was to open the route file with Word so the true Japanese characters were displayed, then cut and paste the Japanese into one of the translators and then cut and paste the translated test. A tedious process at best, although usuing the search function to search for .sta and .sig helps! You don't have to translate the comments in the file (after the ";") - you can remove them or just leave them like I do. You will need to translate the route and timetable info at the top of the file, leaving it alone is ok, but you will see garbage charcters if you do.I think someone has a whole document on this (might be John) - that covers everything including the trick to extracting the archives if you are running Win 98 and prior. Win XP should extract the archives with no problem. Anyway, maybe some helpful sould will remember the link to this doc and post it, because I have forgotten where I got this doc.

Luigi, thanks for the link, however I could not find the document on the Yahoo group. Tim Frost's excellent CSV commands doc is there but I did not see John's (ok maybe I need stronger glasses.)
Hi,I'm in the process of totally rewriting the Japnese routes doc, as Nigel has said most of the, "playing about" only applies to Win 9X users, the old doc on Al's site is still OK, just some of the links are dead and some routes have gone. The new routes doc will be split into 2 parts, The first part will deal with just getting the routes to work, (you'll have no problem opening them with XP) just remember to rename any junk folders/files after extracting, as sometimes, after backing up the files to CD-R the files won't burn if the junk text is still there. The second part of the doc will contain actual translation help, including the entire Japanese rail line names in Japanese and English, with start and finish stations, and an easy way of translating using resources available on the net.It should be out in about two to three weeksJohn
Hi,Just finished my NEW REVISED article, "How To Download,Run & Alter Japanese Routes, Part 1" (v4). It contains all you need to get the majority of Japanese BVE routes working correctly, (XP users don't really need the article as all routes will run OK without alteration)
