>what do you think of the signal box? I think it's blocking the track...

-----You are reading my signature now, don't waste your time reading it!-----
Or probably, maybe you should waste your time reading it.
Eh, where did my signature go?
Oh, here it is, the one you are reading right now? Can't you see it? I know I know, it's probably too bright to see it.
Hey, look at my avatar, nice right? I drew it with my own hands holding the mouse in Paint, with the pencil tool(and the Filling tool!)!
It's a picture of me in Planet Stooopid, where everything is the same as what you call "Earth" except that we are called "aliens" in your planet.
Anyway, I warned you not waste time reading my signature! You have just wasted probably about 30 seconds reading it, where you could have spent the time doing better things, like maybe reading the next post below if there is one...

RE: What do you think?

Hi Fella!!That's a bloody good start...!! With a bit of minor tinkering, you'd have trouble telling it from the real thing.I'm afraid that I'm a bit "anal" when it comes to the level of detail in objects and can see, even in this example, a few areas that would elevate it from "great" to "amazing". Some people might think I'm being overly critical, but the level of detail that BVE can support is really quite high indeed.Keep up the good work...!!Technical Numpty

RE: What do you think?

Hi Stooopid!!Indeed, but by using just a few more vertices and faces it would look pretty damn special. I've got no quibbles with the textures and agree that they are much better than anything that could have been hand-drawn.However, I don't want to be seen to be running down the effort that has already gone into this object. The textures are good, and it's good to be able to see all the way through to the back (or at least have the impression that you can). It's a great effort that looks ready to use but, if you're looking to blow someone's socks off, it could be made even better still using everything that's already there.Technical Numpty

RE: What do you think?

Hi ShaneThe bad news is that signal boxes aren't the easiest of structures to model. You have to get them exactly right or sad obsessives like me start whining about the proportions and so on. They also have annoying details like balconies and stairways. The good news is that yours is instantly* recognisable as a Mackenzie and Holland box built for the North Staffordshire Railway before 1875 - an excellent start to your structure-building career! Here's a few tweaks you could apply to tidy it up though (I assume you're using notepad and the Structure Viewer):- try to make the faces of the roof meet neatly at a point; you might find this easier if you make these faces triangular (the top point of each would then be the same). Have you tried leaving out the texturing and using SetColor to make a plain face while you get the shape right?- check the texturing of the front: the planks and window don't seem quite horizontal. It looks like the photo you're using has some perspective in it, which unfortunately won't make your life easier, but have a go anyway. The next step with your model would be to put in the stairs, balcony and entrance lobby. There's a model of a GW box floating round various routes which will give you some pointers when you feel like doing this.Have fun,
Simon

RE: What do you think?

Hi Fella!!Well, it really depends on you. If you're happy with the results then I wouldn't recommend changing anything. The only limit is your imagination and BVE framerates.I like to get things as detailed as is humanly possible without creating more vertices than BVE can deal with. However, I have discovered that the number it can manage is actually quite large. I did over do it a bit with some wall objects that grace my current project and had to cut back on the detail, as the total number of vertices was enormous and it really dented the framerate. An object like the one you've created could be done with as little as seven vertices and four faces, so there's plenty of scope for increase if needs be. There are some interesting details on the end wall that looks like a staircase, balcony and possibly an extension. If it was me, I'd create these as separate faces and texture them accordingly to give that end more interest. I'd also explore the possibility of creating eaves around the bottom of the roof. I wouldn't touch the textures, as they are amazing and really add to the realism.Depending on depth and viewing angle, some 3D effects can be had very effectively on a flat face (like the arches in the retaining walls around Fiveways station on X-City South), but when it's something bigger I find it's best to put in as much as you can.If there's anything I can do to help, just holler...!!HTHTechnical Numpty

RE: What do you think?

When i ge time i will add the stairs and the toilet as seperat building to give it a bit more 3d ness!!! and some nice affects. Post some screenies when i get the textures to do it, thanks for the constructive critiscm, very welcome indeed!Download add ons for BVE from http://www.sasva.com/central_trains

Hi Shane,
I know nothing about meshbuilder and that technical stuff so i'll keep it breif, well done. This is totally unrelated but your "support me" page isn't working!

RE: RE%3A What do you think%3F

Well, there's nothing anyone can teach you about using photo-realistic textures...!! That electricity substation is amazing. Perhaps I should be getting you to build the objects for my route.Consider my socks well and truly blown off.Technical Numpty

RE: RE%3A What do you think%3F

lol, I struggle for time to build my objects, yet alone any one elses that includes going out and taking pictures to get the textures to start with! Luckly im a 30 second walk to the satation im modelling at the moment, but when i move on further down the line, thats when the problems kick in! People dont half give you funny looks too when taking pics of textures to use!
When ive done alot more i post a scrennie then criticise away. Good or bad throw it at meShaneDownload add ons for BVE from http://www.sasva.com/central_trains

>on further down the line, thats when the problems kick in! Lol, I've got that problem at the moment with the Barrow-Carlisle route. I was a 30 second (probably more like 15) walk from the sation I was modelling so I could get good textures and progress went well. I'm now at the next stop, 5 miles by rail but 10 miles by road. I can get the buildings built but every time i go through the station it is early morning or late night so I can't get any decent pictures, and there is revision to do at weekends . It will have to wail till the holidays.Derek kaye

Naah - that one's nothing like a signal box!Seriously, that's looking good - what was all that stuff about 'blotchy coding'? (Sounds more like a common cold to me).Simon
