Do you think that if we asked John real nice, he might post a brief tutorial - or even a few tips and hints, on how he manages to consistantly get such remarkable shots? His posts here are so sharp and crisp that they almost look like scans of photographs and the composition is such that it makes one wonder if he might be a professional photographer. How 'bout it John, would you like to share a few of your secrets? Doesn't have to be very long - just a couple paragraphs. I take what I think is a decent shot and when I compare it to one of yours it looks like s#$t.Larry

RE: John Roth, would you please - -

Thank you kindly, Larry! No, I am not a professional photographer, but I have been railfanning and taking photos for almost 40 years. I basically copy what seems to work best for others. Here goes:1. 1024x768 32 bit screen res in the game.2. Max out your video options screen sliders within the game, and check everything on, except shadows off (I have to check that). Dump the high framerates when you're railfanning - clarity is key.3. Read Judd Spittler's Excellent treatise:
http://juddspittler.com/spittler_engineering/taking_good_screenshots.htm4. Read this:
http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/DCForumID1/2526.html#155. And read this:
http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/DCForumID15/60.html#196. Practice! Take LOTS of photos. They're essentially free.7. GOOD LUCK helps too!!Hope this helps, let's post those screenshots!John RothJohn Roth, would you please – image 2

How true, Ray! Timing defines everything in our lives.BTW, shadows are, indeed, deselected here. I read that suggestion in a post here; sorry I remember not from whom - duh! Middle-age memory-loss, sorry. Please speak up, whoever made the suggestion! It does help framerates and does not compromise (and often improves!) clarity.Judd Spittler's recommendations are must-read.Show us your screenshots...

Yes, Robert, I believe you are right
Sniper has uncorked so many new bottles of info here I can hardly keep TRACK of them...
(Now where the heck did I leave my Gingko Biloba with the child-proof cap...)

RE: John Roth, would you please - -

Wasn't me, I was johnny-come-lately, didn't even want to try losing the shadows. Disabling shadows provides better framerates, but I still think it looks at least a little better with shadows, so I generally turn them back on for screenshots. My only contribution to this was a suggestion for using different start times to get better lighting angles.http://www.train-sim.com/cgi/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=show_thread&om=846&forum=DCForumID8Lately I've been playing with some of the enhancements in PSP-7, like clarify and auto-contrast, but I found I get best results from;1. Open the pic and copy,
2. Reduce to 800x600,
3. Paste as new selection, which crops off the edges and keeps the 1024x768 pixel resolution,
4. Manually adjust brightness and contrast, brightness +18 contrast +24 seems to work best for most shots.John Roth, would you please – image 5John Roth, would you please – image 6

RE: John Roth, would you please - -

That thread's over a year old - I vaguely remember it - 2001BC. (Before Coconuts!)
It's apparent that your guidelines still work well!
Great shots - real 'snappy' yet low-noise. Someday I have to buy PSP.
Still searching for my Gingko... at least I remembered what I lost!
