Columbia Gorge Progress Report (17 pics) – image 1

Many people have asked for screenshots on the Columbia Gorge route. I chartered a CSX switcher and a few freight cars for this trip. BNSF kindly gave permission for this tour. This tours starts at Wishram, WA and proceeds West to The Dalles Dam. This is just a small part of phase 1 of the route. Well, the train is waiting...Columbia Gorge Progress Report (17 pics) – image 2

Well, seeing as I have five minutes before Cirque DU Soleil: Fire Within is on, I'll just be lazy and post a link to a full post explaining how control cabs work.I assume that you don't know how they work, or what they are.

I found this information on Horsthief Lake on a Washington State Parks website:"For centuries, the park was the site of a Native American village. The Lewis and Clark expedition camped at the village and described its wooden houses in one of their journals. The village was flooded by the waters of The Dalles Dam.Oral history states that the park received its name from workers in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers who developed the site. The workers thought the terrain was similar to that of horsethief hideouts in popular 1950s Hollywood westerns. The abundance of horses kept on the premises by local Indians apparently gave the workers their inspiration."Cal Rasmussen

It's Cal, by the way. There is not much left of that yard. I've been there several times in the past year. I have even driven my car along the river side of the yard and no one said a word. The track plan I used was from a topographic map dated 1994. Most of the classification tracks are gone. Most of the engine tracks are gone. It is now more or less just a "wide spot in the road!" There is room for at least four trains. I have seen that many there. On the other hand, the last time I was there, there were only about six cars in the entire yard. Believe it or not, it is a scheduled Amtrak stop.Much of my route is trackage from the early 1990's and scenery as it is today. Kind of a hybrid in time.Cal Rasmussen

The caption for the last picture above incorrectly states that the The Dalles Bridge is courtesy of Pat Malicki. It is in fact from Ron Picardi. I appologize for the error.Cal Rasmussen

Coming along wonderfully Cal. You picked one of the most perfect areas to model being an Oregonian my self I can appreciate that. Well done and keep up the good work. On another note, did you know someone is doing a model of the SP&S 700? That would be awesome to run up the Gorge, with a string of GN cars in tow, eh?EIN

The dam must be right on a tile boundary. Was that just luck or did you plan it that way?Keep it up.

A tile boundary passes diagonally through the dam. That caused all kinds of problems and the development of techniques for handling the different water levels. The end result is not perfect but, IMHO, it's not too bad, either. I'll post some shots of the dam in the next couple of weeks. I have posted quite a few pictures in the past but there are a lot of new people here who haven't seen it.Cal Rasmussen
