Hi friends:Here's a few pictures of the first little town I've done on the North Georgia Route - runs from just North of Atlanta to just South of Greenville, SC - with a branch (from Lula) to Commerce, Georgia. Hope you enjoy the "story"!It begins with word from the Gainesville local, just arrived and having lunch before turning on the wye, that a long frieght is on the way - southbound to Atlanta.A Day in Lula, Georgia - Progress on the North GA Route – image 2
Well, a look to the North yields the same old thing - empty track!A Day in Lula, Georgia - Progress on the North GA Route – image 3
Then, as we're about to join the crew for lunch, we hear the rumble...A Day in Lula, Georgia - Progress on the North GA Route – image 4
And how many times have we seen this?!A Day in Lula, Georgia - Progress on the North GA Route – image 5
There's a touch of local color, too.A Day in Lula, Georgia - Progress on the North GA Route – image 6
Hang in there - it's almost over..A Day in Lula, Georgia - Progress on the North GA Route – image 7
And Lula is quiet again.A Day in Lula, Georgia - Progress on the North GA Route – image 8
Hope you enjoyed the show! The route-building photo trip with my son was a truly great day.Mark

RE: A Day in Lula, Georgia - Progress on the North GA R

When will the route be done? When will you get around to cleaning out the garage? So little time, so much to do. Honestly, I don't know. I had hoped to have it done by Christmas, but work got very busy and I never realized how much time it took to do scenery. Then there are the route editor crashes and troubleshooting to find out the cause and back track.I've done scenery for about 3 1/2 miles - only got 126 1/2 to go, not counting the branch toward the Georgia Bulldogs. Scenery will go faster as I learn. It takes about 8 hours to do a city mile right now - the country has GOT to be faster - no roads and buildings. Soooooooooo, if I can do 2 good miles a week it will be Christmas NEXT year when I'm done.I try to do more than plant a forest when making this route. The devil is in the details. If I can find an excuse to make a scene out of a simple landscape, I do it. Here's an example of a more rural crossing (Lula Rd.):A Day in Lula, Georgia - Progress on the North GA Route – image 20
And here's something to look at while you're out of the cab waiting for a meet at mile marker 574, South of Lula.
A Day in Lula, Georgia - Progress on the North GA Route – image 21I appreciate the interest. The longer it takes the better it will be (I hope) - and if you can't run trains on it, it don't make no difference how purty it is, so I might release it sooner with plain ol' grass in spots.Mark

SOUTHERN!!!! (sorry...I love that line)I live in Reidsville...but I once lived in the area you model. It's a shame you can't model the funky sidings in Athens. Like the two car passing siding. (and no, it's not a run around)

Where is the siding you are refering to? I live here and am familiar with the line here. There are some storage tracks with switches on both ends but the true "passing" sidings are aproximately 9900 feet long. I wish I had the patience to create a route because there are some interesting industry tracks... Kyle

RE: A Day in Lula, Georgia - Progress on the North GA R

The siding is no longer used. It was (I don't know if it's there anymore) near the UGA campus. You came up a hill and it curved around the same hill, working some industries there along the road. The reason for the shortness was to allow the locomotive to run around the cars he was trying to spot. Though, since it was so short, it meant that you only carried one car at a time out there. (This is stuff I have since been told)

Ohmygosh Mark, That's beautiful. You guys just get better and better. That top shot of the crossing at Lulu Rd is every bit as good as Snipe's PO&N detail. I hope you don't mind, but I downloaded that shot and have it as my wallpaper, displacing one of John Roth's fantastic shots.I'm patiantly awating the day your route comes out - even if it's payware, I have to have it!Larry

RE: A Day in Lula, Georgia - Progress on the North GA R

If the scenery that I've seen in these screenshots is any indication, it will certainly be worth the wait...no matter how long it takes.BTW, have you found a suitable substitute for kudzu yet? I drove through former Southern territory last month and that stuff seemed to be everywhere!HenrySouthern Serves the South!

RE: A Day in Lula, Georgia - Progress on the North GA R

Wow! Thanks to everyone for the great comments. As far as kudzu goes, what I need is a texture that works like a transfer except it's got to be able to cover everything - not just the ground, but buildings, power poles, wires, slow moving farm animals, etc.

RE: A Day in Lula, Georgia - Progress on the North GA R

seemed to be? Kudzu IS everywhere.I lived in Mississippi once and remember hearing the following on the radio.
The lady had called in to get a request, and then struck up a conversation.Lady> (definate New York accent) "Hello, I am new to this area and wondered if you could tell me what that beautiful vine I see everywhere is.Radio man> Ma'am. How long have you been in the south?Lady> Oh, about three weeks.Radio man> Ah. Well, that's Kudzu. Lady> Oh, it's beautiful. The flowers smell so nice. Do you know
where I can get some cuttings?Radio Man> Ma'am. You Want kudzu?Lady> Most definately.Radio Man> Ma'am. Let me get this straight. You are within the sound of my voice and you don't have Kudzu in your yard?Lady> That's correct.Radio Man> Give it a minute.
