The Bluestone Extension on the “Pokey”. The line connected to the Princeton-Deepwater (ex-VGN) line at Matoaka, WV. Producing a steady flow of coal traffic in the 80’s until the mines closed. The line then abandon in 1996, lies dormant now…Branch Lines – image 2Branch Lines – image 3Branch Lines – image 4Branch Lines – image 5Branch Lines – image 6Branch Lines – image 7Branch Lines – image 8

I know you've heard it before, Austin, but I would sure like to see that Priceton-Deepwater extension added to the East River Route! By the way, great work! Loved the East River and I'm looking forward to this one!

Hi Austin:Your Pokey effort is looking very nice. I have high hopes for it as a route on which to enjoy some N&W action from their "Blue" era. (EMD Geeps & stuff, Alco RS11's, 3's, etc!) Andre MingVisit V Scale Creations Forum at: http://www.3DTrains.comBranch Lines – image 14

N&W Blue...Ah yes! Now you're beginning to move in the right time line direction for this old fogey!I can see from those shots that a set of blue GP9's & RS11's on the point of a train of 36' hoppers running through such scenes will be the bomb. From my days as a lad, I can still recall seeing N&W power beginning to invade the old Wabash yard in North KC, Mo. shortly after the N&W acquired the Wabash. The sting of losing the Wabash bluebird GP's was soon softened by seeing them replaced with blue N&W RS3's!! It was smoke city! Neat stuff! Though not very "flashy", I think that blue scheme of the N&W had a "tough" look to it. Understated, but very macho. Know'whatta'mean?Say, I'm not the sharpest tack in the box in regards to the N&W, so I ask... did they have freight EMD F's?Edit: Really like the bottom pic in that last string you posted. Good "feel"... Allegheny railroadin'.

Thanks! As for me, I like running older stuff as well. Still not to sure about these whiteface units. Early 90's is about the era for me. Although when we get some N&W steam/early diesels I'll run them as well. I can't wait for the "J" 600 and "A" 1218 to be released. I like a good mixture from all time periods. Late 80's early 90's being my favorite for the mixture of N&W, Southern, and NS units. And the Pokey is a great route to represent those time periods. I created the route off of a year 2000 track chart and compared it to inspection videos of the line from 1996. Not much has changed over the years on the line. A few branch lines have been abandon and a few road bridges have been added. Other then that not much has changed, so the route opens up opportunities to run different time periods. After release I plan on releasing activities from all era's.I really like the N&W SD40's, and I love that Pelver Blue. I don't think N&W ever had F units. The passenger trains (Pocahontas, Caviler, Mountaineer, ect) were replaced by GP9's after N&W got rid of the "J"s.

"I don't think N&W ever had F units."That's my thinking too, insofar as locomotive purchases. But what about line acquisitions? For example, didn't the Wabash have carbody units on its roster at the time the N&W acquired it? IF so, what became of those? Did they get absorbed into the N&W's roster and operated for "X" years, or purged ASAP?Would be neat to learn that the N&W did inherit some F's and were painted/used by them. Wonder if there's a place on the 'net that has a detailed historical N&W roster?Edit: I hit the jackpot, dude! (Did a quick net search.) As late as Dec. 1968, not only did they have EMD F7A/B's on their roster... but also the FA1/FB1's, FA2/FB2's and some other neat "off the wall" stuff!! I was right: They got them through railroad acquisitions!Andre MingVisit V Scale Creations Forum at: http://www.3DTrains.comBranch Lines – image 25

RE: Branch Lines...

Even wilder than that is that the N&W when it dieselized, did so on a CRASH basis, LOL they rented ¡§pokeberry purple¡¨ E units from the ¡§Atlantic Coastline Railroad¡¨LMAO just imagine the old steam heads in the locomotive shops at Roanoke when they FIRST Saw the purple diesels rollin¡¦ into Roanoke yard, these folks thought a black locomotive with a narrow maroon stripe as the ultimate in daring!! Than being ordered to rustle up some matching purple paint to paint over the ACL logos, and apply a gold ¡§Norfolk and Western¡¨ to the purple units! I have seen photos of the repainted ACL units; they would make a HECK of a repaint!Yes, the N&W did inherit a lot of oddball units, some carbody units lasted until the early 80¡¦s.but as a general rule they stayed in their former home territory and did not roam system wide. Yep some of those F¡¦s in the Pevlar blue do look snazzy!I have seen a photo of a late 60¡¦s early 70¡¦s Pevlar blue passenger train!Branch Lines – image 27 „² a pokeberry N&W unit in Bluefield, to bad it is a B&W photo!

I wasn’t quite sure they had any, but your right. Through line acquisitions (Wabash, Southern, ect) they sure would have had them. Great info Andy! NS4Life

RE: Branch Lines...

Thanks Greg/Andy for some additional input on the N&W's historical roster. Looks like I could correctly run almost all my favorites from the "Classic" era as N&W power on Austin's Pokey!Austin: We learn something new all the time, eh? I THOUGHT I'd seen pics of Pevlar Blue N&W F's "way back when"... but it was so long ago I couldn't be certain. My personal mental images of the N&W in the KC area are scant, limited to a few chance encounters down along the river at the former Wabash yard and mainline... only the RS3 images are distinct. Don’t forget coonskin!!!MINE SHIFTERS!!!!! You can find ALL KINDS of old units in Mine shifter service, up until recently their was a few old F7’s up in the boonies! Old ALCO units are still fairly common I can think of some old “S” units I saw not too long ago, an old RS11. Those are starting to disappear, now GP 9/18/30’s and a handful of SD 9/35’s are around in a PLETHORA of paint schemes. The more motley, the BETTER!The operational possibility of this route are incredible! There are places on the pokey where you can have complete “online traffic” not coal, for instanceLogs, loaded on a siding from a local outfit- online
TO
a “rough cut” sawmill, online
TO
A “finishing” Plant , online
TO
An Online Lumber Yard in Bluefield, “89 Lumber”! For sell to local customersA Complete online transportation, instead off hauling cars to the edge of the map,for shipment to an offline point!Take them to point A,B,C,D!The “Pokey” will be able give all kinds of operational possibilities!--------------------------------

RE: Branch Lines...

Sounds great. It's my hope to SOMEDAY have "representitive" routes installed on my hard drive that depict areas of interest for me to enjoy as whims dictate. I forsee:Cajon or Tehacahapi being my "western" route.Cascade Crossing as my "Northwest" route. The Pokey as one of my "Allegheny" routes.Etc.Long term operational interest being the primary goal. It looks like the Pokey would DEFINITELY have enough operational potential... hopefully the mainline/other signals will be very user-friendly for AI traffic. Also looks to me as if 1st generation N&W diesels, and some other Allegheny roads would look right at home on it.Go Austin, go.

That's what we need! Are there any good N&W RS11's out? I need to get 3D Trains N&W GP9's. And I plan to repaint a bunch of mine switchers up for the route. Currently a nice pair of GP30's operate the Spouse Creeks mine. I started work on them already. NS4Life

RE: Branch Lines...

Ahhhh! This is what I like to see! Stir the pot and: Action!!Sounds great guys! Love 'dem Alleghenies!Classic N&W power may be ready to roll by the time Austin drops his big, fat Pokey on us. Hmm. That didn't come out right. Anyway, you know'whatta'mean, right? As for RS11's... unless you consider the nice TA freebie, there's nothing in the line of freeware. (Yet?... gbeat has a nice one coming along... don't know if it's to be freeware or not.) However, there are such EULA restrictions on the use of the TA RS11 that I don't know if you can easily repaint/redistribute. I know their 36' coal hoppers were restricted so that it was nigh-impossible to work around, can't remember all the finer ins/outs of either EULA.However, where there's a will, there's a way. The Pokey's one of the best Allegheny routes w/operating potential to be headin' our way in some time, so hopefully some Classic Era stuff can be created for it for those that like that era.
