RE: remember the caboose

There once was a day when a train was not considered a train until it had a caboose on the end. Call it what you want a hack, a cabin car, a crummy, a waycar or a cab. It just seems like something is missing, not seeing the caboose at the end of the train. It was like the period at the end of the sentence, you knew that was it, plus you could always count on a friendly wave from the conductor or rear brakeman.
Goodbye old friend....

RE: remember the caboose

Cabooses are still seen by me on occasion:
The CP/SOO runs a transfer from Franklin Park to Bedford Park on the Indiana Harbor Belt...always is as follows: a pair of GP40s, about 30 intermodal cars, and sure enough, a SOO caboose.
CP SOO also uses one on their local from Bensenville to Galewood (Chicago).
BNSF also uses a caboose on their local on the ex-ATSF line through McCook and by the Hodgkins yard...usually a pair of GPs up front, 20-30 cars, and sure enough again, a red ATSF caboose on the back.
The only thing is the CP SOO's never have guys in the cabooses, but the ATSF always has a guy to wave to If you know where to look, you can still find these wonderful cabooses in service.Enjoy,

Kevin V.

The Hershey Chocolate factory's switcher crew uses an ex-Conrail bay window caboose when they're transferring cars from the receiving point at the old factory, a couple miles west to the new factory. This happens daily, usually in the mid- or late afternoon. I've included a picture so you can see it. The photo shows it holding place between two cuts of cars.

RE: remember the caboose

In the late 1970`s at the GTW`s Elsdon yard in Chicago, a GT old woodie, very similar to that CN caboose, was used in transfer service ....... usually to the CNW and the Belt Railway. It and the Northeastern type which served so many differant railroads, are my favorite..........nice job nicober! I have really enjoyed all these excellant pics......thanks guys.Chuck
