RE: Bethlehem Steel again

Thanks for the kudo's guys....the building has more to be done to it though.....the furnaces themselves are actually only placeholders for some properly done furnaces that Im working on.... heres a few pix of the prototype...Bethlehem Steel again – image 8I still have plenty to do on my model...such as pollution control equipment such as this....
Bethlehem Steel again – image 9As you can see from this pic of the charging aisle...the actual furnace has quite a bit of detail....I'm working on a custom TGA file so my finished furnaces with look like these but still have a reasonable amount of polygons...
Bethlehem Steel again – image 10Bethlehem Steel again – image 11here is the Teeming aisle....plenty of ground clutter here...
Bethlehem Steel again – image 12
Here are some more screenies of the plant in its current state...still plenty to do to it before completion....new furnaces, teeming platforms, stairs & safety railings, slag pots, pollution control equipment, new smokestack textures, charging machine...etc.Overall view of the scrap sorting aisle...scrap is sorted and transfered to scrap boxes on buggies on the elevated trestle...from there it is stored in the small shed in the center..then brought directly in front of the open hearth furnaces and charged into the furnaces by a charging machine.

Bethlehem Steel again – image 15Charging aisle where hotmetal is brougt in and scrap boxes are charged into furnaces
Bethlehem Steel again – image 16The teeming aisle where the finished steel is tapped then poured into the ingot molds (sitting on the little buggies)
Bethlehem Steel again – image 17Bethlehem Steel again – image 18And werner...you can expect a preliminary version of this to place on your route in a day or two....its also far from finished but you'll be able to swap it out for the finished verson later on....The Basic Oxygen furnace....(view down charging aisle)

RE: Bethlehem Steel again

RE:" wonder how much it will hit the FPS...?"Actually, that open hearth complex is only 4400 or so polygons....much less than the average locomotive ...(the apparent detail (such as the roof trusswork) is done with TGA files...and some personal tricks!!!)
It depends on how many "other" objects you have on the same tile you place these steelmill buildings on, that will determine your framerates....If a route builder can help it....a large highly detailed industry is best NOT put right in the middle of a large city..etc.My system specs are 1700 MHZ athlon CPU, 64mb Geforce 2 vid card, and 512mb of 2100 DDR ram and there is NO appreciable drop in Framerates around these industries (and theyre all placed in the same tile on a "test" route.)

RE: Bethlehem Steel again

Thanks for the offer Bill, but right now I'm standing in the midddle of a farm field in New Haven, Indiana wondering where to lay tracks. I've downloaded your first batch and plan to use some of the pieces around Fostoria. Maybe there by the end of this nice long weekend ..we'll see. Looking forward to seeing more of your great work.

How many plants did the BS have? There's at least 3 routes with a Bethlehem Steel plants: the LV, N&JC and my upcoming Buffalo.

RE: Bethlehem Steel again

As my route already has the reputation of being a frame rate killer the steel plant won't be an exception.
The plant covers about 2 complete tiles (stretched over 5 tiles all in all), and the tile with the furnace is the heaviest one.
Luckily the blast furnaces aren't on it, but much other stuff, from 3 yards over the mill itself to a good part of South Bethlehem, not to mention a road with heavy traffic that goes first over and then thru the plant.
I'm not completely sure how to deal with it, now with the tracks mostly laid and the most important buildings set my object count is near 800 on that tile, and everything outside the plant plus the detailing is still missing...
I'll probably will have to use those tricks posted here in the forum to cheat the route editor!Werner

RE: Bethlehem Steel again

Holy cow Bill, is that United States Steel Homestead Works???? I've hauled steel out of that mill. It's gone now, instead you'll now find movie theaters, supply stores and shopping centers in it's place. Keep up the great work Take care,
Rich S.P.S. Bill, I have not heard lately how your girl friend is doing. Forgive me, I can't remember her screen name.

RE: Bethlehem Steel again

Hiya Rich.....lisa aka Queenheartles is doing just fine thanks....yes, I guess that is USS homestead works in the prototype pix.....the open hearth building for msts is more or less a "generic" model but it does resemble the homestead openhearth building somewhat.LHW
