RE: 2 of my favorite things !!

Tim.. Ya gotta get yourself a real bike.. <G>
(in case your wondering, this is a C series Vincent Black Shadow)
and yes, while I didn't own one, I did actually get to drive one for a day..(thats the first pic, BTW)
If I was buying a bike today (and vintage wasn't an option, and yes, to me, vintage rules), I'd probably pick up one of these and mod it suitably (there's a guy in the UK that has a 650cc big bore kit with flowed heads, etc.. gets the thumper up to 45HP!!) - Thats the second pick, and its a Royal Enfield Bullet.. I have a soft spot for Enfields, had a 1953 Super Meteor. Other bikes owned were a shwack of early Yamahas from the late 60's, '71 Triumph 500 Daytona, '41 Harley ULH, (80 cubic inches of flathead glory, ex cop bike)
So, if ya wanna swap bike talk, give me a holler...Cheers
Harold

How are you Harold? The Black Shadow has always been a favorite.I love classic sport bikes. That's why I ride a 1986 GSXR1100.The first year.Monster power that eats up anything on 4 wheels.Once you have that you can never go back.I don't have any pics though.By the way, I'd definately choose the girl.I've already got my favorite bike.

RE: 2 of my favorite things !!

Yep, A properly set up Vincent is a thing of joy.. Get a Ducati clutch in there, upgrade the electrics to Boyer Electronics, and if you really want ease of use, add in a Gosset electric start (Vinnies are NOT easy to start <G>).
I have seen a very nice "nero" conversion with a telescopic front end with Grimeca 4ls brakes. Egli Vincents are pretty nice, too, though not as "classic" in style.
My ride on the Shadow was an experience I won't ever forget. Made my Triumph feel like a bicycle..

RE: 2 of my favorite things !!

Nice shots of the Vincent, Harold! I got the chance to scoot on one 15-or-so years ago, but my only hope of owning one now is the plastic kit I have in the garage. At least I took steps to distance myself from the Japanese inline to a more comfortable thumper from Ducati (900ss). Once owned, you'll never go back to inline. Cheers!

Ducati's eh? Had a 250 Desmo for a bit, and drove a 900ss once or twice, you're right, they are nice bikes. My only thumber was a BSA 441 Shooting Star. Buddy of mine had an ancient C15 we rebuilt..
Still, I will always remember riding that Vincent...Cheers

RE: 2 of my favorite things !!

Marc, for the most part I agree about going from the I-4 to a V-twin.So do an awful lot of other people.I also know a couple of KTM Duke owners that would never go back to a twin from the Rotax single. It's nice to launch out of a curve at low rpm's as opposed to taching out a small four. It's how the machine puts the power to the road(torque)as opposed to peak HP figures.0-60 and top gear roll ons are what I care about. That's what makes the 900SS such a great bike.Having said all that, open class 4's are the exception to EVERY rule. It's amazing what 125+hp and 80ft-lbs of torque will do for a ride. The bikes I love the most are unusual in some manner,or are simply rare.Lot's of folks have problems with Japanese bikes.I don't care where its from, all it needs is two wheels,a seat and a motor.Hmmm;what would happen if I put a turbo on my bike?

RE: 2 of my favorite things !!

>By the way Marc, what year Duck? It's a '92 900ss. I had the frame stripped and powder-coated to duc-yellow, and added a 955 carbon kit, Ferrachi pipes and a few other mods. Looks and runs meaner than a hornet - just as long as I keep an eye on the oil (and mirrors). My past bikes included FZR's (mostly 1000's) - all of which were a handfull when blasting the canyons. As I got older (and wiser), I found that I had fewer get-offs (not to mention tickets) with the Duck, as well as a resale value at least 75% of what I put into it (not bad for an old scooter). One thing I've always have been impressed with (twins in general), is the gemoetry when entering turns, and the bike's forgiveness under braking. I used to do a lot of canyons, and several times deer (and an occasional boulder) would jump out to say "hi, nice bike." I honestly feel that in those times it was the twin that saved my life - rock-solid under emergency antics. Had it been an inline, I would have high-sided the objects for sure - I've seen it happen many times (and against opposing cars too), and it's not a pretty site.Older, wiser, and no doubt slower, but at least I have my skin intact. Cheers!

>Hmmm;what would happen if I put a turbo on my bike?Remember the old Z1R-TC's? The turbos were manufactured by an outfit in Long Beach...I had a go on one back in '78 or '79...Scared the **** outta' me! I thought no one should go that fast, but the Z1R is pretty tame by todays standards. Makes a good drag bike (like the old GS-1000's), but death in corners. Cheers!

RE: 2 of my favorite things !!

Marc, the Duck sounds awesome.I agree about big bore sportbikes being a handful in the canyons. We don't have canyons on this side, but the mountains are great anyway. My 86 GSXR has an 18" front wheel! It doesn't like to be thrown from side to side like a new sportbike. My 1990 Kawi Zephyr 550 is much better for that. It's my first bike,I bought it new and I still have it.It's important for me to see the motor on a bike. That's why I don't have the side fairings on.It looks great without them and cools better.it's interseting you mention drag racing. My friend at the Honda/race shop I used to work at has an extended swingarm for 1986-88 GSXR1100's.I'm thinking of drag-racing it semi-pro.

Since I take a lot of photos, I change my background very often. Here are two of my favourites at the moment. The first was taken at Great Northern Rail's yards at North Melbourne on 5/11/2002. T345, 4306, 4520, 4468, GM22, GM10, J103 and GM25 are visible in the shot! The second image is a down pass departing Woodend during a break in the clouds on 6/10/2002. Yes, that's me in the hogger seat. The unit is BNSF 1680, a GP9M, at the Railroad and Heritage Museum in Temple. The unit isn't open for viewing yet, but the exec. director is a good friend of mine . The engine has a very bad frame crack behind the fuel tank, as seen in these photos, so BNSF gave it to them. Vandalized the electrical cabinet, bell and radio.Firemans side
