While i was in Grapevine dropping off my grandma i looked toward the tracks and saw something strange as we came closer it got into view. It was Thomas! The little blue engine was sitting outside the grapevine depot on the old cotten belt line from Ft. Worth to Memphis. Now owned by the FWWR. Anyway here are some pics of Thomas.

Nice pics. I'd always wanted to see that in person, just never found the time to go out there when it's been local. I have an aversion to HUGE masses of children too... Tim Frost

I don't know... maybe it is a real working steam engine but then it would show smoke and steam. And I agree with Roni, too plastic looking, bleh! But it would be a funny thing to see it rolling down the rails./JonatanSteam rules!A Day out with Thomas – image 10

RE: A Day out with Thomas

I was lucky enough to catch Thomas while visiting family in Fort Bragg, CA. It is a dummy engine... and when it was on the California Western RR, they had an engine at the end of the train push Thomas out of town. He has a working whistle and headlight... and they even throw smoke bombs in him to get a cool smoke effect. All the kids were happy to see him. It got a good laugh out of me when it was crossing Hwy 1 in downtown Fort Bragg... interesting seeing everyone's face as they sat in their cars, watching the train go by.TONY

RE: A Day out with Thomas

I had heard there were some "fake" Thomas replicas around, that had to be pushed by an actual engine at the back of the train. The one I saw two years ago:A Day out with Thomas – image 11Was a conversion by the Strasburg railroad society of an actual 1913 Porter 0-6-0 tank engine.A Day out with Thomas – image 12If you compare these with the ones in the first post, what's missing is the steam chests on the sides."I have an aversion to HUGE masses of children too... "Lucky I don't have that problem, just my grandchildren constitute a "HUGE mass"!A Day out with Thomas – image 13

Yes, it's so fake, it probably IS plastic! I dunno even how Thomas runs without a piston and drive rods! Another rod underdrame? If so, it must undergo alot of maintenance in where Thomas lives...MTA Going your way for 100 years. 1904-2004A Day out with Thomas – image 15

RE: A Day out with Thomas

Thomas is a steam engine with inside cyliders. Many British engines were inside cylinder engines. The middle axle has two cranks and connection rods which connect to the cylinders and pistons INSIDE the frame, like in the attachment below./JonatanSteam rules!A Day out with Thomas – image 16

RE: A Day out with Thomas

Actually, it has a piston. That type of loco has a single piston, situated between the frames and working a crank that connects one of the axles. Brits used them on most kinds of engines, with the strangest being the "Teutonic" class. 2-2-2-0

The Loco ain't supposed to look like a real one, it is a fictional engine out of a Children's story books and movies called Thomas the Tank Engine. The video's are filmed on a model train layout. If you have never seen one before, I suggest you look for one. They are for kids, but me, at 14, will watch an episode if I see one while channel surfing! Now they need to make Gordon or Henry!

RE: A Day out with Thomas

I saw Thomas when me and my little cousin and my grandfather went to the Illinois Railway Museum to see him on the Thomas Days. Oh my god, to many people. F9 BN1 was doing the honors.

Eh, where did my signature go?
Oh, here it is, the one you are reading right now? Can't you see it? I know I know, it is probably too bright to see it.
Anyway, I told you not waste time reading my signature! You have just wasted 10 seconds!

Yes, James is one to get especially mad. The other engine in blue (what WAS his name??) that's the size of James won't get jealous though, he's not the type. Edward! That's the one.I used to looooove Thomas. The videos are still entertaining approximately once a year. Tim Frost
