The Empire Builder, running over 12 hours late due to a major derailment at Essex, MT, crosses out of Montana and into Idaho on the Kootenai in 1992.
The Builder is a considerably longer train than usual this summer, with 27 passenger and material cars, and 4 F40PH locomotives, two just bought from AMT and headed for Tacoma for repainting. (Like I said, it's a fictional configuation! )
After waiting in the hole for a BN freight, we traversed a short tunnel and continued towards Sandpoint.
We were desperately trying to make up some time, if only a few minutes, but it would prove futile as we had a set-out up ahead.
I don't know about anyone else, but AMTK 306 and 309 seem to follow me everywhere, and 309 always seems to be the unlucky unit providing HEP.
A lot of railfans came out to see the Builder make a rare daylight appearance in an area it usually passes at around midnight going Westbound, and about 3am going Eastbound.
In the hole yet again...
Doesn't look like these AMT units will be very hard to repaint.

Next station Sandpoint, Idaho. If this is your station stop please check around your seat and gather all of your things before moving to the lower vestibule to detrain. Once again, we apologize for the extreme delay. If Sandpoint is not your station stop please do not leave the train. We are making a very short stop today. First and final call for Sandpoint, Idaho.
