These shots show my take on the first ever VIA Train #14 (The Ocean)to leave Montreal for Halifax using the new "Ren" equipment. Because it was combined with "The Chaleur" (which separates from The Ocean at Matepedia, PQ) it consisted of 4 F40PH engines, 9 Budd Stainless Steel cars (The Chaleur) and 22 Ren cars (including 2 baggage cars) for a total of 4 engines and 31 cars. Not long by freight standards, but definately a LONG VIA train. This train finally pulled into Halifax something like 8-10 hours late, partially because the long train was forced to make 2 stops at most stations.

(my current desktop)http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=24069 http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=24115 I must admit that I did screw up a little bit, I didn't put the sleeper cars right after the baggage car on the Chaleur portion of the consist as the should be.

How exactly do 3 F40s go about providing HEP (Head-End-Power) to 28 cars? Also, I was on VIA this summer and rode in a trainset of very nice "HEP2" cars. Does the acronym mean anything related to Head-End-Power?I also rode the TTC Y-U-S line and... just as I suspected... the BVE route is perfectly realistic! Nice one Dave! Tim Frost

RE: Long VIA Train

Thanks Tim!As for how 3 engines can provide HEP power for 28 cars, I'm not too sure, but someone else can probably answer that.As for your HEP2 question, yes, the HEP1 and HEP2 cars were the first VIA cars to be converted to head end power, all cars before them used steam.Cheers

>not too sure, but someone else can probably answer that. The first two (or one, or three) have the HEP disengaged, so they are only providing motive power. The last engine in the lash-up will be set to (depending on the size of the train) either the standard HEP+traction or HEP-only "hotel power".>As for your HEP2 question, yes, the HEP1 and HEP2 cars were

>Cheers They were the first to be converted, yes, but they weren't the first HEP cars that VIA had. The Tempo cars were the first (grandfathered from CN), followed closely by the then-newly ordered LRC's.What happened was that in the late 1980ies, the stainless steel cars were getting quite long in the tooth...so much so that VIA gave serious consideration to buying hundreds of Superliners to replace them. The government of the day however found the cost so astronomical that they reneged on their promise to replace all of VIA's antiquated (which had begun with the purchase of the LRC equipment in the early part of the decade). Instead, VIA was forced to buy and trade for second-hand equipment, and had it rebuilt to their own specs. This became the HEP1, or long distance fleet.Less than 5 years later, VIA's fleet of ex-CN Blue and Yellow cars were at the breaking point...suffering many major breakdowns daily, the cars were simply not cost-effective to keep around anymore.VIA still had a sizeable fleet of ex-US Budd stainless steel cars that had been sitting in storage after the end of the HEP1 program (which had been cut short after the service cutbacks of 1990). It was decided that they would use many of these cars (and several others that were found and bought). Unlike the HEP1 program which rebuilt the ex-CP fleet of baggage cars, long-distance coaches, sleepers, diners, etc., this program's sole purpose was to rebuild the cars into short-distance coaches for Corridor resembling the LRC cars inside, but with improvements. Thus became the HEP2 fleet.DanP.S. Dave, shoot me an email when you see this message...we need to talk.Making a mockery of serious business for 23 years.

Thanks very much Dave and Dan, just what I wanted to know! Still seems like a lot of cars to power with only one locomotive providing HEP, but I suppose if it's not doing anything else (HEP only) it could manage. My understanding is that with HEP + Traction they could only manage about 8 cars, however. If VIA's F40s are newer than Amtrak's third order this might be different though. Thanks for the reply regardless! Tim Frost

Tim,As I understand it, VIA's F40's are only capable of handling 6 passenger coaches by themselves.Don't know why, but I figure it has something to do with either the higher track speeds allowed in Canada, or maybe because VIA never upgraded them to 3200hp as Amtrak did.IIRC, VIA's P42's are allowed to single-handedly pull 14(!) cars.DanMaking a mockery of serious business for 23 years.

RE: Long VIA Train

Hmmm...
VIA Superliners... That'd have been interesting to see..
Anyone know if plans had advanced far enough for a decision to have been made on what types of Superliners? (ie would VIA have bought the standard Amtrak models (Diner, Lounge, Coach, Coach Baggage) or have their own developed?)

AFAIK, the decision had been made, and PO's may have even been written up. The original decision would have been for 210(!) cars, later cut back to 145. They would have likely been almost identical to the Superliner 2 cars which would have been about fully completed by that time (the last of the Superliner II's were delivered in 1986, right?). RE: Long VIA Train

I thought Superliner IIs didn't get delivered until the early 90s? More likely it was the last Superliner Is that were delivered around 1986.
