Messing around with ideas, I decided to dust-off and bring out an old model on the Tutorial Route...And yes, Virginia, the screen's fully animated. After a late-night setout, Clem and Virgil head back to the yard "light" to beat the 12-midnight rule...
"Hey Virgil - look! A movie!"

"Hmmmm...Candy...Popcorn...Pizza...Coca-Cola..."
A Night Out – image 3Passing the theater, our heros check out the marquee...
"I wonder what's playin'? Ah, classics!"
A Night Out – image 4The same spot several days later...
"Not much action during the day, eh Clem?"

RE: A Night Out...

Great idea ... looks good.Of course now I'm waiting to see who will be the first to attempt a MSTS version of O. Winston Link's famous photograph, the one that featured a N&W class Y loco and train running behind a drive-in theatre. I'm sure you've seen it ...

heh, How ironic that a plane is shown on the screen while a train rushes by, I think most of us here would drop the pop-corn and watch the steamer go by, I know i would!A Night Out – image 10

I'm a big fan of Mr. Link's photos and that's by far my favorite. It's one of the most important railroad shots ever taken.

RE: A Night Out...

O. Winston Link. A Master! And yes/no?, Mike, they may/may not? have been staged...
Staging has the ability to control the elements and tailor our perspective...
It is a key element to shape the resulting photo.
Did the photo grab our attention?
Control the light and elements... snap the moment... photography at its best.
Staging works.
Luck works less frequently!
Classic OW Link.Exceptional photos all!John RothA Night Out – image 12

I hope you didn't think my comments about it having been "staged" was meant to detract in any way from that great photo. My brief comment was based both on a career in motion pictures, and having witnessed countles night-time areas lighted--including one drive-in.Even forgetting the light on the train, its smoke, and the weeds at the base of the track, we clearly have vehicles bathed in enough light (with a show going) to make things look staged to those technically aware of the tools. Key light camera left, train lights (several) camera right, low, shining up from the ground and hidden from the camera view behind parked cars.Maybe, maybe not? Hardly. If the above isn't convincing enough, check the shadow of the bush on the tail of the tender and leading edges of the boxcar. And it's still a beautiful photo; it took much planning, considerable coordination and a small flock of "extras." Something rarely done for stills. It is well executed and romantic--the work of a visionary pro.MikeKind regards,
Mike

RE: A Night Out...

I had the privilige to hear Link do a presentation with commentary on his works in 1983. He was especially proud of this shot. The movie playing did infact have the jet as a part of the movie. Due to the speed of the lens on the still shot, the Drive-in screen was a blur. He had to get a b&w shot of the jet and cut the negative and literally "paste" it into the shot. The Buick convertable in this shot as well as many others was his personal car!He was quite a remarkable person and it was very interesting to hear the effort put forth to get those fantastic shots.
