Hello,
These are the (narrow gauge and rack) railways on the Slovakian side of the High Tatra (up to 2600 m, not bad for "flatland" ), which restored service in 1970 with Swiss help and which are treated in this picture series, of course also a loooot of material from the trips to and from the area and what's going on there on the mainline (pure Skoda-Power)! Map is included with the full picture series.
Full picture series here (over 1100 pics online from three days, I can't help it... 8) ):http://ronaldus.com/asmallworld/tatra/Selection of pics (with this amount of photos veeery difficult to choose!)Trip to the Tatra:Tauri at Bratislava Petrzalka. This is one of the border stations to Austria:
Our express train at the main station of Bratislava:
Very efficient: These barrels were loaded on at the main station and loaded off again in a suburb of Bratislava, on an express train!
on the way:
Sadly a bit blurry evidence that new things are coming to the Slovak railways:
Arrival at Poprad-Tatry:
After check-in at the hotel, going on by railbus to Studeny Potok, where the trip to Tatranska Lomnica continued with bigger standard gauge DMUs:
Sadly the Tatra seems to attract clouds, but the atmosphere was great:
Finally stepping over at Tatranska Lomnica onto the electrical narrow gauge railway, one of the few older rakes in service. A three day card for the entire network at the foot of the Tatra costs 4 Euros:
Meeting between three EMUs at Stary Smokovec:
Scenic view back:
At Poprad: The narrow gauge terminal is situated in right angle above the mainline station.
New rakes:
One of the many freight trains going through Poprad with double loco heading:
On the next morning:
Going to Strbske Pleso via Stary Smokovec in one of the very luxurious new EMUs:
Then, trip by rack railway down to Strba and up again:
in Strbske Pleso:
the lake:
Return to Stary Smokovec:
Tickets are being sold via PDA:
The cable railway onto the Hrebienok:
When returning to Poprad we went on foot from Velky Slavkov:
Back to Poprad:
old EMU on it's way to the depot:
Many freight trains are being pushed by older Skoda-locos, the difference in altitude is quite high between stations:
Next morning in Poprad, because of lack of connecting bridge you simply walk on the railway bridge
Branch line down to the shed:
Waiting for the express train back:
Return journey. Mentionable: in Slovakia eight persons are supposed to fit into one compartment, it was nevertheless quite comfortable (there weren't eight persons inside ).
The imposing castle of Trencin:
By railbus from Bratislava to Marchegg:
At the border station Marchegg, stepping over into an ÖBB train:
And there are so many more pics! :
