Ugly engines?
Hmm...I always thought that the SD40-2s looked great in the "pumpkin" scheme. To each their own, I guess .Good shots, BTW. Jonathan Nikiforovs.

Yeah - as John said - Each to thier own Personally i think the SD40-2's are the second best looking locomotives in the 60 odd years of deseil locomotives. Second only to the GE C44-9W's Nice pics though!! Cheers

RE: PRETTY engines!!

Personally, I never liked the BNSF paint scheme, only looks good on October 31st. I always thought we needed a woman's touch around here anyway, so my opinion Annabelle oughtta jump over to www.jasc.com and get Paint Shop Pro, then fly over to http://fly.to/mwgfx and get TGAtool2, and start repainting!Ugly engines – image 8Just my opinion, I could be wierd!

RE: PRETTY engines!!

I am planning on learning to paint cars, but could I have that engine? Please??? That engine would look so good with JE's snack & band cars. I know the purists would scream, but it would make the KHP really neat. I honestly got tired of those orange & yellow engines, and you can't see forward out the cab window either. What's the point of being realistic and not being able to see? If I knew how to make a smiley face on it's knees I would. Please may I have it?Annabelle

>point of being realistic and not being able to see? You're not the only one who hates the default SD40-2 cab. Is this one any better? This is a replacement for the default cab, and it's available in the library. Just go to "File Search" and type 'SD402ca1.zip' on the "File Name" line to find it. The cab files are actually contained in a .zip file inside the main .zip file, and all you have to do is move the contents of that file into the 'cabview' folder of the SD40-2. The only problem is that the view directions in the .cvf file are a little off for some reason, but that is easy to fix. I have also included the .cvf file I use for this cab, in case you're interested. Jonathan Nikiforovs.

RE: PRETTY engines!!

That is horrible. I would be ashamed to drive that down the rails. Which brings up a question. Are there engine washes, like car washes, or does someone do it with a long brush and hose? And how does an engine get that dirty? It doesn't run through puddles or anything. I can understand dust but I don't understand mud. I know, another dumb question. Sorry. But I am curious.Annabelle

Annabelle,I can't wait to see Sniper's reply !! This (297) is his "Pride & Joy" of the Port Ogden & Northern. It's "my thing" to bust him about a paint job.Yes, there are engine washing facilities (kinda like a drive thru car wash), but how often a particular engine gets there is, (I guess) a chancy thing. Paint is a different issue. Those of us who drive for the PO&N "sorta kinda" get used to the barbs we get from engineers on other roads !! Bob Kambach

RE: PRETTY engines!!

"And how does an engine get that dirty? It doesn't run through puddles or anything. I can understand dust but I don't understand mud."Need to know the history of the PO&N for that one. Once upon a time, people who reskinned engines only did them for real railroads. Then a guy named Kevin "Cadman" Shea got an idea, why not a reskin for a fictional route? So he reskinned an SD40 for the PO&N, still in the file library as PO&N #16. That was fun while it lasted, then that Pineapple eating bum passed me by in popularity like I was standing still, next thing I knew everyone was painting for East Metro/Ohio Rails. So I had to steal his engines, drive them off the end of the dead end switchback bridge into Port Ogden harbor, and let them soak for a while to get all the East Virginia & West Canton Metro paint off.Actually, I tend to overweather everything, and that's supposed to be rust, not mud. Bob is always teasing me about washing and repainting #297, but it's called the "Rustoleum Reject" cuz even those guys didn't want to try repainting it!Ugly engines – image 15It actually don't look half bad for my first repaint that I felt was good enough to upload, I got the effect of old paint showing in places where the newer paint flaked off pretty good. Rust is definitely overdone tho.Ugly engines – image 16Not really enough subtlety in the weathering at all, but Marc Nelson from 3Dtrains published this weathering guide:http://www.3dtrains.com/guides/gp9/gp9_guide.shtmlAnd some of my subsequent attempts looked a little less splotchy.Ugly engines – image 17 That's SD40 #1953 on the far left, a more realistic looking rustbucket.Ugly engines – image 18 The tree frog formerly known as Southern Railway likes it, so what do you think? RE: PRETTY engines!!

I am honored that it is named after me, and I think it is absolutely ready for prime time. But please don't get in trouble because of me. It would probably start a flame war that would close down the forum. I have laughed at these posts all morning; you appeal to my sense of humor. And I most humbly apologize for mixing up rust and mud. Looking at it again it is a FINE job of repainting rust . As a first attempt it looks very professional to me, and you should be justly proud of it. Since my engines fall of the bridge at regular intervals it's nice to know there's hope for them.By the way, are you the Coconut God? After about 75 or so attempts at trying to get around Coconut Island I put it on hold for awhile. But now I think I'll try again.Annabelle PS I'm off to look for #297 & PO&N #16.

RE: PRETTY engines!!

"It would probably start a flame war that would close down the forum", flamewars are what I LIVE for. Take some of the heat off of Jim England and his 86 foot box cars for a while, and have some fun while I'm at it. I think most of the people picking on him are well aware it's not a good idea with me tho, cuz I do scorched earth warfare, and I will accept no terms other than their immediate and unconditional surrender after the flamenwerffers start. I grew up on the West Side of Chicago, I got asbestos skin and lots of napalm. "By the way, are you the Coconut God?"That would be me.Ugly engines – image 19

Some of us merely clicked on the "forgot your password?" link and got a new one with the old screen name, others, like "Southern_Railway", registered again with a new online name, in his case "Tree Frog". You run into any old threads by "RagMop", that's Rgarber.Anyway, Bill Southern Tree Railway Frog needed a little help packaging for distribution back in the days before Route Riter came along to make it simple, so he immortalized me in coconut husks.http://www.train-sim.com/cgi/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=show_thread&om=5151&forum=DCForumID6

"After about 75 or so attempts at trying to get around Coconut Island"Funny you should mention that, I put Bob's physics 4.5 into this SD40-2 and was testing to see if I would get a broken coupler on some of those tight SeaView curves. No broken couplers, but with the uphill/downhill speed limits I'm constantly derailing after carefully driving 5 miles or so. I suddenly get distracted ("what was THAT?! ) by something I hadn't seen before, bust the speed limit and hit a tight curve, coconuts splattered all over the landscape. I don't think I've ever driven all the way around coconut island without derailing either, I'll have to try that. No fair turning off derailments! Anyway, we're playing with trains here, so you can drive it on any route and tell the Prototype Purists I said

I don't think it's ugly. SD40-2 is a BNSF workhorse. They doing a hard job everyday, no time for makeup
Many of these engines work on Stevens Pass, WA and many of them still in BN Cascade Green paint. btw I like it more than BNSF orange.

During times of locomotive shortages, Southern Pacific often forgot to wash locomotives. They were SO dirty. I mean, pigs in mud were cleaner than that.
