Hi folks:A little more progress on the NE Georgia/South Carolina Route - the Peidmont Division of Southern Railway/Norfolk Southern. CSX crosses the main right at mile 585 in the south part of Gainesville, GA. CSX terminates in a wye, and interchanges with NS. Hope you like - it's not done (hell, it's never done).Mark

RE: The Gainesville Diamond

LAST EDITED ON May-07-03 AT 04:02 PM (EDT)

Hi Marc:Thanks for the comment. Most of the tree areas aren't flat. It's a mix of tree group objects, individual trees and then the flat background.I've attached a couple jpegs showing the basic approach I use. There is a hit to frame rates, but not really too bad. Before trees I get close to 50 fps; trees take it to about 24 fps. Weeds ala Sniper slow it down a little more, but not too bad. In the industrial area, though - I'm at 10-12 with a long train. Geoforce 3 Ti1200 card and 1.8 Mhz machine (I think - I'm not home right now - on the laptop).So.... when you get around to your Southeast USA region rolling stock, maybe I'll have another mile of track ready to receive your great artwork!Mark

RE: The Gainesville Diamond

Thanks Mark - Are these trees you made, or are they available here in the lib? I've been struggling with the tree issue for some time, as the Virginia countryside is supposed to be packed with 'em. Faking with terrain textures only goes so far. Cheers!

RE: The Gainesville Diamond

Marc:These are default microsoft textures - I used the real names in the screen captures above - but they're scattered throughout the default routes. I think I found some in Japan, some in the NE route, and some in Marias Pass. So you don't even have to download to get them!Mark

RE: The Gainesville Diamond

Thanks Al:No, I've got the track down, but no scenery in Buford. I started in Lula (Hall County), and worked South. After I fill in the gaps in Gainesville, I'll head North again to at least Cornelia - because I can make the route operational a lot faster that way - ain't much but kudzo between Lula and Cornelia. From there it's a toss-up whether I do scenery up to Toccoa, or head back towards Atlanta from Gainesville. There's a lot of detail to plant between Gainesville and Atlanta, so I don't know how long it will take to get to Buford - but I will get there. All the track is down from Easley, SC to Doraville. I'll try to post an update every five miles or so. I just bought TSM - that should really slow me down! Mark

RE: The Gainesville Diamond

Hey Don:Mostly pine trees in Florida - not the kind you see out west. There are lots of trees, but all I know about most of them is that they're green (usually). The route is 128 miles not counting the branch to Commerce, GA from Lula - it's 22 miles long. At 25 mph with one major industry, it's boring as hell to drive, I might add. Has a few interesting grades, though. About the time you get decent speed, the train starts to get away from you. The grades in this route are according to the prototype track chart. Thanks for the interest. I'll keep ya posted.Mark

RE: The Gainesville Diamond

The Silver Meteor?Nice train - wrong railroad. Southern operated the Southern Crescent from Washington DC to New Orleans. Train #1 and Train #2. E8's in front.Glad you like the route. It's all I can do to plant trees - I'm not a model builder yet, but I might do a little reskinning in my spare time. Hopefully someone really good will make those engines with the air tanks on the roof, and passenger cars with the SRwy Logo on the sides, and the black roofs.Until then, here's some of the stuff I've managed to pick up in the forum library, assembled to look at home on my route in progress.Stay tuned!Mark
