First off, Welcome! do you want to be addressed as Grundey, or something else. You might wanted to make a signature and a user profile.Anyway, My advice would be to start with either Bucksport, Maine, or Chevron Oil, CA. Enter the yard, and then go up to the menu, and select MAP,...LOADED MAP, ...POPULATE MAP. This will put cars on the various industry sidings. Create a train of 2 switch engines with no cars to enter the map and sort the cars in the small yards for various destinations. Then you can send them out to the system. You can either run it yourself to the next yard, or just save it to your hard drive, and upload it for others to work on (this will earn you some money!).These maps are nice in that you only have one exit to the rest of the system, the yard is small (2 or 3 tracks), and for the time being, you don't have to worry about mainline trains (they add money, unless they crash, which if you're not careful, can make you go broke). Hi,I think that Paul did a great job explaining how to first get started. Some other thoughts,1. It would be a good idea to read Jim's MSN site, it has a lot of great information which can answer a lot of questions that you may have about how the system works, what does what, etc.
2. A small yard would certainly be the best to start switching, but if you want to start classifying cars to be sent out on certain trains you could start in a small yard(trackwork builtwise) such as Fresno or Eugene. They should give you a good understanding of how to sort cars.
3. Start with small trains, 4-5 cars. Don't try to classify a 35 car train in which the cars aren't blocked, just yet
4. Have some fun because that's what the whole point is!Chris Lee

Thanks for giving Grundey a hand. It gives me more time to add maps to the system! Jim
