I'm thinking of putting an ad im Model Railroader magazine. Here the proposed text so far. Let me know what you think of it. Is it too exciting? too exagerated? too overblown? Yard Duty™ The National Freight Yard SimulationThe ultimate railroad switching game, with the most complex layout ever conceived. It would take millions of dollars to build this layout in any scale!-- Create your own trains & yards… -- Operate trains over actual satellite images… -- Share trains with other online players… -- Plot the path of freight on a U.S. map… -- Email notification when freight arrives… -- Windows 9x, etc…US $1.00Download it today at ... Also, I just received a packet in the mail from the magazine which contains advertising rates. Some of those multi page ads run into the thousands of dollars! Ouch! Anyway my add should only cost a few hundred. Of course, I won't place the ad until all the bugs are worked out...Thanks, KingJPW
I had a pretty good surge in sales of my "US Railroad Map" software when Signal Consultants started running ads for it in "Trains" a couple of years ago (They are a reseller for this product). It was a bit of a breakthrough for us. It was pretty expensive for Signal, so they alternated it with their Train Dispatcher program. They have not run the ad for a while."Trains" has a smaller circulation than "Model Railroader", so the rates are a bit less. In your case, I'm not sure which publication is better.I've considered running my own ads, but decided to wait until the next release. Meanwhile, I've run classified ads in "Trains", which are not very expensive. I don't know how many sales they create, but I think it helps to keep my product visible.Ron http://www.railwaystation.com
Thanks for the info. The way I see it, the ad can't hurt! As far as which magazine to choose, I was up in the air because I read both and could envision the ad appearing in either. I guess I'm thinking Model Railroader because it seems like all the articles mention railroad 'operations' and if readers enjoy thinking about operations and designing model railroads which can be opereated prototypicaly, then they should enjoy my software. I mean it makes 'operations' possible which can never be acheived on any layout.I would imagine that the average Trains reader would be more interested in trains & locomotives than actually operating animated trains on a layout. Just a hunch...KingJPW
Cool. Oh, I'll be registering soon. I like the game, it's really well done. There's one thing I've found funny though about MR.While back there were tons of people writing letters saying that "MSTS is only a game. it won't ammount to anything. It's not modeling."And yet, now MR is inviting groups like TA and 3D trains, to come and show their work at the NMRA conventions, and also saying that screenshots can be entered into their trackside photo contests.I wonder what the guys who said we wouldn't ammount to anything are doing right now. (probably posting here)
Often, it's just a matter of time before people to get used to new things. Hey, maybe someday they will accept Yard Duty maps to be entered into photo contests. Haha. Jim
