With the addition of more junctions and yards, travel time between main classification yards is getting longer and longer. I'm beginning to think that to minimize the time lost waiting for a train to traverse from one yard to another, that most, if not all 'mainline' maps should be removed from the system. I'm defining 'mainline' as a map that is not a junction, and has no industry. In other words, serves no purpose in the system other than to exist. What do you think? Thanks for any input.Corey Vernier

RE: Mainline Maps

The first thought that comes to mind is that new players, who associate themselves with a given team, have a way to get used to YD by taking trains handed off to lets say CSX. As a new player, I had no assigned area and learned about YD through taking trains handed off from one location to another via a mainline run. I find now, that since I have maps to work, an occasional drive (road trip) is a pleasurable thing to do. I think that the main line maps should stay and if one does not want to run the main line, hand it off. I'm pretty sure someone will take it.If you find that the train is siting on the server for to long a period, take it back off and run it. We are talking what, 5 mins?Duncan

RE: Mainline Maps

NO WAY! I enjoy running the trains from map to map, Eleminating them to me would be a BIG STEP BACKWARDS! I say add a button on the bye section to run automaically to selected yard, like it does now for empties. That would be a better choise than eleminating Main Lines.Marc

RE: Mainline Maps

I fully agree with you Corey that with the addition of so many mainline maps the travel time is getting too long. I have brought up this question while online a few times and have gotten the same answers.
However I have two solutions that I use. #1. If I know the maps designer I post to them, I figure if they designed it they must really like the place so they won't mind driving trains through it.#2. I post to "anyone" and gamble that the train will head in the general direction of the destination. If you do this, you must put the destination in english in the remarks block or a block-head like me will see a CR TV34 and send it to Nevada or someplace! (I have never done that)
This reason is also why I personnally never post to "team" because I'm probibly "not" on the correct set of tracks or the symbol is wrong and I have the train headed for Nevada or someplace!Hope this helps,
Tim

I respectfully disagree with Corey and Tim.1. I think there are only 9 non-junction mainline maps, 6 of them in CA. So the percentage is not that high.
2. They contribute to the realism. Real trains do not leave a yard, and immediately enter the next yard. A large percentage of the time is spent out on the mainline. Now I realize that the focus of yd is on the yard activity, but some mainline running gives it a more realistic feel (and can be a needed change of pace from kicking or humping long strings of cars).
3. Mainline running, and therefore mainline maps, are a good intro for new operators, as Archer said, and I for one would hate to have them eliminated.Paul MetzgerCP Rail System (D&H)
