For those of you interested in what it takes for me to do Yard Duty connections, here is a sample. Basically, I interpret the text connections that are sent to me. Then I draw the picture. I draw a circle around each connection after it is done. When all the exits have a cirlce around them, I am finished, except for errors. It's pretty hard work and takes alot of concentration to get it right.KingJPW

Jim,THANKS for finally showing us how much effort it takes you to do connections! I'm almost sure that we all assumed it was merely a copy/paste operation from the .his files to the .ini file.I thought many months ago you had devised some method of making connections easier. Was this it?Is there some kind of batch process (or other type of prog; remember, I'm a civil!) you could write that would input the "9XYZ:# to ..." connections that we submit and
a) assign 9XYZ to a 1ABC series number (you might have to specify the new number);
b) dump an output in the format shown in the .ini file that you can easily copy/paste into the .ini file.
Ideally, you would be able to input multiple sets of connections.By automating the process and ensuring that it works, you would insulate yourself from the connections process: Any resultant errors would have been sucked right out of the .his file that was submitted. And although it'd probably take a lot of hours to write, it'd cut doing connections from four hours to, say, four minutes. Maybe ten if you took your time. -Dave

Wow! Now I feel bad for redoing Howell Interlocking into the convoluted mass of trackage (and exits) it really is. Oops . Jim, thanks for showing us what happens 'on the inside'!Corey

Dave, the above sample doesn't really touch on how the data gets into the system. The way I do it is really the best way for me. The time involved has little to do with typing in the connection data, and more to do with figuring out the new connections, removing old ones, and making sure everything makes sense.Jim

RE: Map Connections

Yep, I do exactly what Jim does before the connections are even sent to Dave, who then checks for obvious typos, and submits it to Jim. Does this mean I can stop doing all the work I do, which if Jim is redoing it, is wasted on my part?Paul Metzger
